Elderly South Pasadena man still missing after a week

SOUTH PASADENA — Police and worried family members Friday continued seeking an 82-year-old man suffering from dementia who’s been missing for more than a week.
Abenicio Chavez was last seen about 7:30 a.m. April 26 at the South Pasadena Convalescent Hospital, 904 Mission Street, where he had been staying, South Pasadena police Detective Richard Lee said. He was believed to have wandered off of his own free will.
But he has not been seen or heard from since, the detective said.
Chavez was described as being in the early stages of dementia, officials said.
He has family members in Los Angleles, who have grown increasingly worried with each passing day without word from Chavez, Lee said.
The missing man does not own a car and does not drive, police said. No possible destination was known.
Officers have checked with area hospitals, as well as locations connected with the man, such as a motel he has stayed at in the past, Lee said. The investigators circulated fliers and asked residents if they have seen Chavez to no avail.
Chavez was not wearing a medical alert bracelet, police said. It was unclear if had any identification with him.
He’s described as Latino, 4 feet 11 inches tall, 100 pounds, bald, with brown eyes. A description of the clothing he was last seen wearing was not available.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the South Pasadena Police Department at (626) 403-7297.
