Police: Pasadena man accused of attempted murder after running down women with car

PASADENA — Police jailed a Pasadena man early Sunday on suspicion of running down and seriously injuring two young women during a fight outside a house party early the previous morning, authorities said.
Carlos Rene Rico, 19, of Pasadena was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and being arrested about 2:30 a.m., according to Pasadena police officials and Los Angeles County booking records. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail pending his initial court appearance.
The alleged attack took place about 1 a.m. Saturday near Raymond Avenue and Hammond Street, Pasadena police Lt. Jason Clawson said.
A crowd of about 50 people was gathered outside a house party when a fight broke out, the lieutenant said.
“During the fight, the suspect intentionally backed over a group of pedestrians,” Clawson said.
Two 19-year-old Pasadena women suffered injuries including broken legs and were down in the street when officers responded to the incident, which witnesses first reported as a shooting, Clawson said. But investigators believed several other people who were struck by the backing Nissan Altima fled the scene before police arrived.
Rico abandoned his car and ran as the infuriated mob tried to attack him, Clawson said. He was not found Saturday.
But investigators caught up with the suspect and arrested him early Sunday morning at his father’s home in Pasadena, Clawson said.
Though seriously hurt, the two women who were run over by the backing car were expected to survive their injuries, he said.
