UPDATE: Near-drowning rescues reported in Covina, West Covina

Rescuers and family members resuscitated a man and a 7-year-old boy Sunday during two separate near-drowning incidents in Covina and West Covina, authorities said.
A man estimated to be in his 60s was discovered floating in the pool by family members shortly before 5 p.m. in the 800 block of North Reeder Avenue, Covina police Lt. Ric Walczak said.
Family members removed him from the pool and called 9-1-1, the lieutenant said.
Covina police officers John McLean and Louis Spindola were the first at the scene, Walczak said. They discovered the man was not breathing and began administering CPR.
“While performing CPR, he began breathing on his own,” Walczak said. Firefighters soon arrived and took over the man’s treatment as he was taken to a hospital.
It appeared the man would make a full recovery, he said.
Less than two hours later in West Covina, a 7-year-old boy was hospitalized after being resuscitated by family members who found him unresponsive in a swimming pool, officials said.
The incident was reported about 6:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of Dore Street, West Covina police Sgt. Michelle Figueroa said.
The boy was believed to have been in the water less than 30 seconds when family members discovered him and pulled him from the swimming pool, Figueroa said.
He did not appear to be breathing, and a family members performed CPR, she said.
By the time rescuers arrived, the boy was awake and able to speak, according to the sergeant. He was taken to a hospital to be examined.
