Montclair man arrested in Covina shooting released without charges

COVINA — A Montclair man arrested last week in connection with a Covina shooting has been released without charges pending further investigation, authorities said.
Jose Valencia Gonzalez, 31, was arrested July 17 on suspicion of shooting and wounding another man during an argument, Covina police Lt. John Curley said.
He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and held in lieu of $500,000 bail pending arraignment, officials said.
But prior to what would have been Gonzalez’ initial court appearance July 19, prosecutors elected not to file charges, referring the case back to police for further investigation, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Shiara Davila-Morales.
A 25-year-old man was wounded in the leg in the July 14 shooting in the 100 block of East Cypress Street, police said. The injured man, who was not believed to have gang ties, was hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening.
A 32-year-old woman who was believed to be involved in the argument was also initially arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, but soon released without charges pending further investigation, Curley said. She was believed to be involved in the argument that preceded the shooting, but not the shooting itself.
