A Covina man and woman are accused of child abuse after their 4-year-old daughter was brought to a hospital with suspicious injuries, police said.
Laci Jones, 28, and her boyfriend Gordon MacAndrew, 50, were being held in lieu of $100,000 bail each pending their initial court appearances, according to Los Angeles County booking records.
Police began an investigation about 10:40 a.m. Thursday after Jones brought the couple’s daughter to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora, according to Covina police Lt. John Curley.
There were “signs of physical abuse” on the child’s body, including bruises and scrapes to her face, arms and buttocks, the lieutenant said. She was treated at the hospital and released later in the day.
“Covina police detectives immediately responded to the hospital and conducted an extensive investigation along with members from the (Los Angeles County) Department of Children and Family Services,” police officials said in a written statement. She was arrested just before noon, records show.
Gordon MacAndrew, 50, Covina“Detectives continued the investigation and interviewed the victim’s father, who admitted child abuse had occurred in their home, located in the 600 block of East Ruddock (Street) in the City of Covina,” the statement said.
Police arrested MacAndrew just after 4 p.m., booking records show.
The 4-year-old girl and her two brothers, ages 3 and 6, were taken into the custody of DCFS, Curley said. No injuries were discovered on the boys’ bodies.
Exactly how the girl’s injuries were inflicted remained under investigation, Curley said. Detectives were still looking into whether objects were used to strike the child.
“We recovered some items from the apartment that we’re looking at now,” he said. “We are looking to see if there’s a connection.”
The lieutenant declined to say what the items were, citing the ongoing investigation.
