Suspects in fatal Old Pasadena beating appear in court

PASADENA — Three men charged in connection with the fatal beating of a U.S. Marine reserve in Old Pasadena earlier this week appeared in court Thursday, authorities said.
Fernando Ramirez, 25, of Rowland Heights, Jonas Ramos, 24, of San Gabriel and Angel Moroyoqui, 21, of El Monte each face charges following the death of Joshua Martinez of Los Angeles, which occurred after he was punched outside a restaurant in the 100 block of East Colorado Boulevard.
After being punched by an assailant in an alleged late Monday attack caught on video, Martinez is seen falling from the curb and striking his head hard on the street. He died at a hospital early the next morning.
Ramirez, who was arrested late Tuesday, had been charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault me means likely to cause great bodily, along with the special allegations that he personally inflicted great bodily injury and that the victim went into a coma and suffered brain damage and paralysis, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Shiara Davila-Morales said.
Co-defendants Ramos and Moroyui, who were arrested after showing up at an El Monte hospital with minor stab wounds, are each charged with assault likely to cause great bodily injury, according to Pasadena police and district attorney’s officials.
An arraignment hearing for Ramirez was postponed Thursday until Aug. 27, court officials said. Ramos and Moroyoqui, who both pleaded not guilty to their charges Wednesday, were ordered back to Pasadena Superior Court Aug. 27 for a preliminary hearing setting.
All three suspects were initially being held in lieu of $1 million bail after being booked by police on suspicion of murder.
But after appearing in court, Ramirez was being held in lieu of $60,000 bail, while Moroyoqui was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail, according to officials and county booking records. Ramos was released from jail Tuesday after posting $30,000 bail.
