AZUSA — Two brothers were behind bars Saturday after allegedly striking another man in the head with a baseball bat late Friday, police said.
Michael Toscano, 21, and Stephen Toscano, 18, both of Azusa, are accused of assault with a deadly weapon following the 6:48 p.m. attack in the 200 block of East Gladstone Street, Azusa police Sgt. Andy Sutcliffe said.
After officers responded to a report of an assault involving a baseball bat, “They found the victim with significant head trauma,” police said in a written statement.
The victim, a 44-year-old Azusa man, was taken to a trauma center with severe injuries, but was listed in stable condition, officials said.
“Fortunately, two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were in the area at the time of the incident and were hailed by a witness,” the police statement said. “He directed them to the suspects who were fleeing the scene. The deputies detained the suspects until Azusa officers arrived on scene.”
Investigators determined the suspects and victim knew each other prior to Friday’s alleged assault and had been involved in an ongoing fued, Sutcliffe said. Further details of the dispute were not available.
According to Los Angeles County booking records, Michael and Stephen Toscano were being held in lieu of $30,000 bail each pending their scheduled arraignments Wednesday in West Covina Superior Court.
