PICO RIVERA — A man was wounded but expected to survive after he was shot in an apparently gang-related attack late Friday, officials said.
A man in his 30s was standing in a residential neighborhood in the 4600 block of Walnut Avenue prior to the attack, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Dodson said.
“The suspect approached the victim on foot and asked where are you from,” the sergeant said. The question is a common way in which gang members challenge potential rivals about their gang affiliation.
“The response was ‘nowhere,’” Dodson said. But the answer did not satisfy the attacker, who was armed with a small handgun.
“The suspect fired four or five rounds. The victim was struck in the abdomen,” Dodson said.
Officials said the wounded man was hospitalized in stable condition.
Dodson described the attacker as a Latino man in his early-20s, about 6 feet tall, of thin build, wearing a black baseball cap, a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. He was last seen getting into a car — possibly a silver Nissan Altima — which headed south from the shooting scene.
