AZUSA >> Authorities blocked northbound traffic on San Gabriel Canyon Road at Azusa’s northern border late Saturday due to a road stabilization project, officials said.
Only local residents were being allowed beyond Old San Gabriel Canyon Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada said. Southbound traffic was not affected.
The closure began at 7 p.m. Saturday and was expected to remain in effect through Monday morning, unless a solution can be figured out sooner, Caltrans officials said in a written statement.
0504_NWS_SGT-L-CLOSURE2“The slope stabilization project between Carpenter Canyon and Pejsa Canyon bridges has required one-way traffic control, and motorists are bypassing the traffic signals installed for their safety,” according to the Caltrans statement. “This highway experiences heavy weekend recreationalists, and with the warmer weather a higher volume of bicyclists and motorcyclists is using the road.”
The project involves the installation of sheet metal walls to guard against future landslides and prevent resulting long-term closures, officials said. The work is scheduled to be completed in the fall.
