UPDATED: Two wounded in Azusa stabbing

AZUSA >> Two men were critically injured in a stabbing after leaving church in Azusa Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The incident unfolded about 1:10 p.m., just after the victims they left a church in the 600 block of East 5th Street, Azusa police Sgt. Bruce Badoni said.
“The two stabbing victims are involved in a fight with another person,” the sergeant said.
After being stabbed, the two men ran back toward the church, he said. One collapsed in the parking lot, while the other was found inside the church.
The two victims, ages 32 and 35, were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where they were rushed into surgery Sunday afternoon, Badoni said.
“The last info we had, both were critical,” he said.
The attacker was described as male, however no further description was available.
The stabbing came at the end of a violent weekend in Azusa.
A 23-year-old Azusa man was stabbed and beaten about 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of West 1st Street, Azusa police officials said. He was hospitalized in stable condition. No suspects were arrested.
A 17-year-old Azusa boy is hospitalized with serious injuries after being shot several times Friday night in the 800 block of West 6th Street, officials said. No arrests had been made in connection with the shooting.

Woman, children unhurt following Pasadena drive-by shooting

PASADENA >> A drive by shooting sent a bullets into a home occupied by a woman and two children late Saturday, but no injuries were reported, police said.
The shooting took place about 10:35 p.m. at Howard Street Navarro Avenue, Pasadena police L. Mark Goodman said.
A man in a passing black sedan opened fire on the home, striking the front window, the lieutenant said.
A 59-year-old woman, along well as a 12-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl who were inside the home were unharmed, he said.
The motive for the shooting was unclear.

Man beaten in Pasadena while meeting supposed cell phone seller from online ad

PASADENA >> A man who arranged a meeting in Pasadena to buy a cell phone through an online advertisement ended up the victim of a beating and robbery attempt, police said.
The crime took place about 6:30 p.m. in a residential neighborhood in the 500 block of North Marengo Avenue, Pasadena police Lt. Mark Goodman said.
A 22-year-old Pasadena man met with the supposed cell phone seller, the lieutenant said.
“While conversing with the main suspect, two other suspects came from behind,” Goodman said.
One of the men punched the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground, he said. The attacker continued punching the victim as he rifled through his pockets in search of money.
The three would-be robbers fled empty-handed after being unable to get any money from the victim, Goodman said. They fled in a car left parked across the street.
Police said the victim suffered bruises and abrasions but declined to be taken to a hospital.
A detailed suspect description was not available.

UPDATED: Gun battle erupts on La Puente street

LA PUENTE >> No wounded victims were initially found after a gun battle unfolded on a residential Le Puente street between two shooters in two cars and another person at a home, officials said.
The exchange of gunfire was first reported shortly after 2 p.m. in the 300 block of Lang Avenue.
Two attackers in two passing cars, described as a gray Jeep Liberty and an older-model Nissan Maxima, opened fire with a handgun and a rifle, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said. The intended target, who was not struck, returned fire.
The rear window of the Nissan Maxima’s had been shot out, but it was unclear if anyone inside the vehicle was struck by the gunfire, Sgt. Liza Vera said.
Both vehicles were last seen heading south on Lang Avenue, officials said. Initial reports from the scene indicated the suspects were five men and one woman, and they were armed with a handgun and an AR-15 rifle.
The intended shooting victim, a man in his mid- to late-20s, was believed to have former gang ties, Lt. Rick Thurlo said.
He apparently received word that attackers were coming after him, and armed himself as he awaited their arrival, the lieutenant added.
It was not clear Sunday afternoon whether the man would be arrested.
The shooting appeared to be gang-related, and sheriff’s gang detectives are handling the investigation, Vera said.

San Gabriel man fatally struck by truck in 605 Freeway in Industry identified

INDUSTRY >> Authorities have released the name of a San Gabriel man who was fatally struck by a big rig after exiting his car on the 605 Freeway i Industry early Saturday.
Richard Taiyung Tswei, 62, died at the scene after being struck by a truck about 6:20 a.m. on the right shoulder of the southbound 605 Freeway near Valley Boulevard, Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner Investigator Betsy Magdaleno said.
Tswei had exited his car for an unknown reason when he was struck by a big rig, according to Officer J. Gomez of the CHP’s Baldwin Park area office.
The truck driver remained at the scene.

La Verne man killed in Glendora motorcycle crash identified

GLENDORA >> Coroner’s officials Sunday identified a 23-year-old La Verne man who died after his motorcycle collided with two cars along Arrow Highway Saturday afternoon.
Nathan Puga died in the 12:04 p.m. crash on westbound Arrow Highway, just east of Sunflower Avenue, in an unincorporated county area near Glendora, Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner Investigator Betsy Magdaleno said.
He was riding a 2015 Kawasaki Ninja at about 80 mph in the left-hand lane just before the fatal collision, Officer K. Croxford of the California High Patrol’s Baldwin Park area office said in a written statement. In front of him was a 2010 Volkswagen Passat traveling at about 10 mph, having just made a left turn onto Arrow Highway from a parking lot.
“ Due to Puga’s unsafe speed, he was unable to maintain control of his vehicle and struck the left side of the Volkswagen Passat,” Croxford said. “The force of his impact caused Puga to veer to right before the Kawasaki overturned onto its left side.”
The motorcycle and rider then slid into the rear of a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta stopped along the curb.
Paramedics pronounced Puga dead at the scene, officials said. Neither driver was injured.
The investigation was ongoing, and witnesses are encouraged to contact the CHP’s Baldwin Park area office at 626-338-1164.

UPDATED: Teen shot, three people stabbed during weekend violence in Azusa

AZUSA >> Weekend violence in Azusa left a teenager wounded by a gunfire and three men hospitalized with stab wounds, authorities said.
The separate incidents took place Friday night, Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon, Azusa police officials said.
Two Azusa men were critically injured in a stabbing about 1:10 p.m. just after they left a church in the 600 block of East 5th Street, Azusa police Sgt. Bruce Badoni said.

Another attack took place about a mile away around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of West 1st Street, police said.
A 23-year-old Azusa man walking down the street was confronted by three men who pulled up in a dark-colored sedan, Sutcliffe said.
“After words were exchanged, the victim was attacked by the three subjects and stabbed twice in the upper torso,” he said. “The victim was also punched and kicked several times in the head and upper body while he was on the ground.”
The three attackers, described as men in their early-20s, returned to their car and fled. The victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
In another incident, an unidentified attacker shot and seriously wounded a 17-year-old Azusa boy about 10:50 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of West 6th Street, according to Azusa police Sgt. Andy Sutcliffe.
The teen was standing on the south sidewalk when a dark-colored sedan pulled up, parked, and a passenger exited.
“The passenger walked within close range of the 17-year-old and opened fire with a handgun, striking the victim several times in the upper torso,” Sutcliffe said in a written statement.
Paramedics took the teen to a hospital where he was listed in “serious but stable” condition Sunday, the sergeant said.
“No arrests have been made, and the motive for both the shooting and (Sunday morning) stabbing is actively being investigated by Azusa police detectives,” Sutcliffe said.
The attacker and driver were described as men in their early-20s.
Police had no information to indicate any of the violent incidents were related to each other, Badoni said.

Bomb squad called after woman finds 26 grenades, rocket launcher in Alhambra home

ALHAMBRA >> A bomb squad responded to Alhambra Saturday after a woman cleaning out her parents’ home discovered 26 grenades and an anti-tank rocket launcher, which were ultimately found to be inert, officials said.
The incident kicked off about noon at a house in the 200 block of South El Molino Street, Alhambra police Sgt. Richard Aguayo said.
Upon discovering 26 rifle grenades and an anti-tank rocket launcher, “She wisely called the police rather than touch them,” Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
Alhambra firefighters and a sheriff’s bomb squad responded to the scene and evacuated nearby homes as a precaution.
But the incident soon concluded when investigators determined the grenades and rocket launcher were inert practice devices and not dangerous, officials said.
Sheriff’s officials took the devices to be properly disposed of.

San Gabriel man fatally struck by big rig on 605 Freeway in Industry

INDUSTRY >> A San Gabriel man died after he was struck by a big rig after exiting his car on the right shoulder of the 605 Freeway in Industry early Friday, officials said.
The man, described as 62-years-old, died at the scene of the 6:17 a.m. collision along the southbound 605 Freeway, just south of Valley Boulevard, Officer J. Gomez of the California Highway Patrol’s East Los Angeles area office said in a written statement. His name was not released pending notification of family.
Officers investigating reports of a man lying on the right shoulder found the man unconscious, lying directly in front of his Toyota Camry, Gomez said.
Investigators determined that, for an unknown reason, the man had exited his car before being struck by a 2004 Peterbilt big rig, the officer said.
The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, CHP Officer Alex Rubio said. The collision remains under investigation.

Motorcyclist killed in crash on Arrow Highway in Glendora

GLENDORA >> A young man died in a motorcycle crash on Arrow Highway in Glendora Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The motorcycle collided with another vehicle just after noon in the westbound lanes of Arrow Highway at Sunflower Avenue, in an unincorporated county area just outside of Glendora, California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubio said.
The rider, described as a man in his early-20s, died at the scene, Rubio said.
Officials shut down the westbound lanes of Arrow Highway at Strawberry Lane as investigators continued working at the scene Saturday afternoon.
No further details were available.
