COMPTON >> The muffled cries of a newborn baby girl led deputies to discover the infant buried alive beneath asphalt and other debris along a Compton bike path Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The infant was believed to be 36 to 48 hours old when she was discovered about 4 p.m., buried under debris in a crevice alongside a bike path lining a riverbed near 136th Street and Slater Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said in a written statement. She was ultimately hospitalized in stable condition.
Deputies received reports of a baby’s cries being heard emanating from the riverbed, according to Sgt. Marvin Jaramilla of the sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau.
While searching the area, “deputies heard a baby’s muffled cry and located a
newborn baby girl buried alive under pieces of asphalt and rubble inside a crevice located along the bike path,” Jaramilla said. “Deputies removed the pieces of asphalt and debris and rescued the baby from the crevice.”
The girl was wrapped in a blanket and cold to the touch, he said. After being treated by Compton Fire Department paramedics, she was taken to a hospital where she remained under observation Saturday.
Detectives ask anyone with information regarding the abandonment to contact the Special Victims Bureau at 877-710-5273. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 80222-8477.
Authorities reminded the public of the county’s “Safe Surrender” program, under which newborn babies showing no signs of abuse may be dropped off at hospitals and fire stations with no questions asked within 72 hours of birth. For more information, visit www.babysafela.org.

  1. At least the media did he ‘honorable thing’ and concealed the arrested suspect’s identity and provide no description… for this crime in Compton….

  2. Come on Mr Jenkum, Buried alive !?!?!? A newborn baby girl buried alive???? How sick! not dropped off at a hospital, fire station, church, or even a park bench would have been a nicer place to leave her for someone to find her and give her a chance at life! Buried alive by someone and all you care about the person who did this description not being given by the media? Why is that? Sounds pretty suspicious. It couldn’t have been you? You wouldn’t be that dumb to write in here like that!!!! Or would you be? Or you think it’s funny? Or you think the person who did this was innocent of attempted murder. If you knew this person you do them the disservice of not getting them the help they need. I’m not saying by telling police. No one likes a rat and people get help in hospitals that treat mental conditions. Jails don’t do a thing for mentally ill people accept put them in harms way. I’m saying getting them checked in for evaluation and let them talk about it. This is serious disregard of human life. It maybe wasn’t the mother. But many times when it is these woman have such a empty dead like feeling in them and they regret the actions they took with their baby. Some have no conscience at all. Could you imagine the childhood a kid would have with a mom with no feelings for her own babies? I’m sure it happens a lot. Buried alive by someone is the welcome this child gets. I’d be curious how this child grows up. And see them as adult. Poor baby. How sad. Thank god some people called to report the baby crying. There are a few good people left in the world. It’s too bad the person responsible for this horrible crime parents didn’t feel the same way about them…..or maybe they did and that’s what this is all about.

    • Ok you’re saying thank god an innocent person wasn’t arrested and wrongfully accused of such a horrible crime because the mother is always number one suspect and DA LIKES TO WRAP UP CASES EVEN IF INNOCENT PEOPLE SPEND YEARS BEHIND BARS. Very true. Given the nature of this crime, people reading description will go and rat out a ton of possible suspects. I was so upset by the story I didn’t follow my own rule of reading twice or three times a story and people’s comments before giving my opinion/comments on it.

      • I’m glad you have the pulse of the investigation, and how the police would assuredly arrested the wrong person/persons.What a thankless job..The way he was holding her told me he had no intent of finding how did this to her, <sarc

    • Why are we assuming she or he was mentally ill.Just saying the comment of not turning them in. what does someone have to do to be guilty of a crime .its not a case of taking a pack of gum..that baby has rights .The mom or dad ,or both tried to kill her,it amazes me of how your comment starts and ended was polar opposite.you just argued yourself to a draw.
