Man and woman accused of beating niece with glass bottles in Azusa

AZUSA >> An Azusa man and woman are accused of beating their adult niece in the head with a glass bottle during an argument early Sunday, officials said.
Bertha Herrera, 36, and Francisco Carrera, 27, were both arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon following the incident, which unfolded place about 4:45 a.m. in the 500 block of East Hollyvale Street, Azusa police John Madaloni said. Herrera is also accused of inflicting unlawful corporal injury to a child.
The alleged attack took place after the victim, a woman in her 20s, argued with Herrera, accusing Herrera of assaulting her own 11-year-old daughter, Madaloni said. Herrera’s husband also became involved in the dispute.
Officers first responded to the neighborhood after receiving an “incomplete” 911 call, “with sounds of a disturbance and/or struggle on the line,” according to the sergeant.
“On arrival, officers located a female adult laying in the street suffering from head wounds,” Madaloni said. The woman told police her aunt and uncle had attacked her with “multiple glass bottles and sharp pieces of broken glass.”
The injured woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
“The initial investigation revealed that the assault stemmed from a family disturbance where Herrera had allegedly assaulted her own 11-year-old daughter moments earlier,’ Madaloni said. “Alcohol consumption appears to be a factor in the incident.”
The girl was treated for minor injuries, he added.
Herrera was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, while Carrera was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail, according to police and county booking records. Both were scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in West Covina Superior Court.
