Man sentenced in Baldwin Park triple-murder

| | Comments (0) |
POMONA -- A judge ordered a Baldwin Park man to spend the rest of his life behind bars Thursday for a murderous rampage in 2008 in which he killed his mother, a woman next door and her 4-year-old daughter.
Roy Perez, 30, was sentenced in Pomona Superior Court to three consecutive life sentences, as well as another term of 139 years to life in prison, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Stefan Mrakich said.
The prosecutor said Perez had long suffered from mental illness, and that the attack occurred after he became enraged at his mother.
"Throughout his life," Mrakich said, "he had a great deal of irrational anger directed toward his parents -- both his mother and father."
Perez pleaded guilty last month to three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting spree, which took place Feb. 25 in the 14500 block of Rockenbach Street in Baldwin Park. He also admitted the special allegation that he personally fired a gun in the crimes.
Perez's mother, 47-year-old Alicia Perez, neighbor Dalmy Mata, 31, and her 4-year-old daughter Briana were killed. Perez wounded Mata's other two children, Kimberly and Edwin, who were 9 and 14 at the time.
Mrakich, who prosecuted the case along with Deputy District Attorney Samer Hathout, said Perez had a long history of mental illness and went on his rampage after a bizarre confrontation with his mother.
"He was claiming that his mother was not his mother," Mrakich said. Perez then retrieved a handgun and opened fire.
After shooting his mother about 16 times, Roy Perez went next door where he attacked the Mata family, Mrakich and sheriff's officials said. It was unclear why the neighbors were targeted.
When officials arrived at the scene, Perez was still clutching a 9mm handgun used in the shooting, Lt. Dan Rosenberg of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau said.
Mrakich said Perez suffered from "severe paranoia," and his history of mental illness dated to his teenage years. He has been held by authorities on 72-hour psychiatric evaluation holds several times.
At Perez's sentencing, Mrakich said, he told the courtroom that he deserved the death penalty, saying that a "bad demon" had taken control of him. He also said that he missed his mother.
Perez pleaded guilty before his trial started, Mrakich said, so it was unclear if an insanity defense would have been attempted. Officials agreed to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the plea agreement. At the time, no official determination had been made on whether the death penalty would be sought against Perez.
"It's just a tragedy for everyone involved," Mrakich said. "For the Perez family and the Mata family, and I hope they all find some peace."

BALDWIN PARK - A Pizza Hut delivery man was struck on the head with a crowbar and robbed of cash and pizzas by two robbers Monday night.

The man was treated at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Medical Center and released, said Baldwin Park Police Lt. Joe Bartolotti.

The robbery was reported at 7:22 p.m. in the 3100 block of Vineland Avenue.

"He gets out to make his delivery and was approached by two subjects. One has a crowbar and hits him on the head," Bartolotti said.

The robbers fled with the money and the pizzas.

The suspect with the crowbar was described as Latino or white, 15 to 17, with short hair and wearing a gray shirt and black shorts.

The other suspect was described as a Latino, 15 to 17, with a black bandanna over his face and wearing a black hat or baseball cap, black shirt and black pants.

Police aren't sure if Monday's incident was related to the three robberies of pizza delivery men last year but did say it happened within the same area. The suspects in the earlier robberies were armed with knives and also took pizza and cash.

Misconduct case makes waves in West Covina and Baldwin Park PDs

From Thomas Himes:

West Covina police have opened an investigation into one of their own after the victim of an alleged rape accused a sergeant assigned to sexual crimes investigations of propositioning her.

In a related, but separate investigation, officials said Thursday the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will probe allegations of misconduct against Baldwin Park police Chief Lili Hadsell, per her request.

A 49-year-old woman told West Covina police investigators Monday that a sergeant propositioned and sexually harassed her during and after a rape investigation he conducted.

The woman alleges she was raped by her estranged husband, a prominent San Gabriel doctor who is Hadsell's brother. Her estranged husband did not return phone calls seeking comment.

"I was raped, going through a nasty divorce and then they stick me with this cop," the woman said in an interview. "He harassed me through the whole investigation. I was scared. I'm still scared.

"Who do you trust?" she said.

The sergeant under investigation did not return calls seeking comment.

West Covina police Chief Frank Wills said his department will investigate the woman's claims. He added the law limits what he can say about police personnel matters.

"The department is aware of the allegations and is taking appropriate steps to look into those allegations," Wills said.

Former Baldwin Park High School star gets 31 years

A man who might have been one of the NFL's best ever will spend several years in the penitentiary for attacking his girlfriend. Lawrence Phillips, who went from Baldwin Park to the University of Nebraska to the NFL, lived life on the edge

SAN DIEGO - Ex-NFL running back Lawrence Phillips has been sentenced to more than 31 years in prison for attacking his girlfriend and driving his car into three teens.

Phillips, 34, a former Baldwin Park football star, was sentenced Friday in San Diego for assault and other crimes.

Phillips told the judge he didn't get a fair trail and he'll appeal. He switched lawyers several times in the trial, and told friends and family members that he felt like he was badly misrepresented by the public defenders who were assigned to him.

Phillips twice choked his girlfriend in 2005 in San Diego. Later that year, he aimed his car and struck three teens after a pickup football game in Los Angeles.

That car belong to the San Diego victim, and Phillips was originally charged with stealing it.

Ty Pagone, a former Baldwin Park vice principal and football coach who was at the school when Phillips attended it, said he was "horrified" to hear the length of the sentence.

"There are murderers who get shorter sentences and he didn't kill anyone," said Pagone. "I don't think he ever even put anyone in the hospital."

Pagone added that he believed Phillips did need to answer for his crimes.

"There are no doubt he has made mistakes, but he is not a monster, the way he has been depicted sometimes," he added.

Pagone said two of Phillips' other former coaches had attended the hearing in San Diego, Tony Zane of Baldwin Park,

Man pleads guilty in Baldwin Park triple-slaying

BALDWIN PARK -- A Baldwin Park man admitted Thursday to murdering his mother, a woman next-door and the neighbor's 4-year-old daughter during a 2008 shooting spree, officials said.
Roy Perez, 30, pleaded guilty to three counts of murder for the deaths of 47-year-old Alicia Perez, 31-year-old Dalmy Mata and 4-year-old Briana Mata at a pretrial conference in Pomona Superior Court, court officials said.
He also pleaded guilty to attempting to murder Dalmy Mata's two other children, then ages 9 and 14, who were shot and wounded in the Feb. 25, 2008, attack in the 14500 block of Rockenbach Street in Baldwin Park.
"Perez had an argument with his mother," Lt. Dan Rosenberg of the Los Angeles County sheriff's Homicide Bureau said. "As the dispute continued, he retrieved a handgun and shot her."
"After the shooting, he went next-door and began shooting members of the Mata family," the lieutenant said.
Alicia Perez was shot more than a dozen times, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Shiara Dávila-Morales said. Dalmy Mata was shot once in the head and once in the neck, and Briana Mata was shot once in the head.
Alicia Perez, Dalma Mata and Briana Mata were all pronounced dead at the scene.
When police arrived, Rosenberg added, they found Perez standing in front of the home, still clutching the 9mm handgun he used to carry out the shooting.
The children who were wounded in the shooting -- Kimberly and Edwin Mata, have since recovered from their wounds and are "doing well," Dávila-Morales said.
The prosecutor handling the case could not be reached directly for comment Thursday.
Roy Perez lived with his mother at the home, officials said.
Though an argument between Roy Perez and his mother led to her shooting, prosecutors and sheriff's investigators said they did not know why Perez chose to attack his neighbors.
"The motive remains unclear," Dávila-Morales said. "(Perez) does have a history of mental health problems."
Sheriff's homicide investigators and Perez's family members have said Perez has displayed erratic and violent behavior in the past and had been placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold more than once.
Perez faces three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, as well as an additional consecutive 139 years in prison when sentenced on January 14, Dávila-Morales said.

Maywood cops seek help from Baldwin Park to catch rapist

| | Comments (1) |
But, the Baldwin Park cops haven't called back.

Here's the composites and Ben Baeder's story:

Police said a man who tried to snatch a 13-year-old girl in Maywood on Tuesday may be the same man who kidnapped and raped a girl in Baldwin Park two weeks ago.

A Latino man with acne scars tried to kidnap a 13-year-old girl at 6:45 a.m. as she was walking to school in Maywood, police said.

The man's description was similar to one given by a 15-year-old Baldwin Park girl who said she was kidnapped and raped Oct. 12 while she was cutting school.

"This guy kind of matches the guy up there," said Maywood Police Detective Dale Walker.

The man in the Maywood case was reported as in his mid-30s, 5-feet-11 inches tall and about 170 pounds. The man had dark hair, brown eyes, acne scars and a mole on his right cheek, according to police.

The man in the Baldwin Park case was described as a 5-foot-8 male Latino in his 30s, weighing about 210 pounds with with acne scars, short brown hair and brown eyes.

Attempts Tuesday to reach the Baldwin Park detectives handling the case were unsuccessful. Maywood detectives so far have been unable to reach Baldwin Park detectives to discuss the case, Walker said.

BALDWIN PARK -- For the second time in less than a week, a pizza delivery man was robbed delivering to a neighborhood in Baldwin Park, authorities said.
The crime occurred about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 3100 block of Vineland Avenue, Baldwin Park police Sgt. Doug Parnell said.
The delivery man was walking through an apartment complex to make a delivery when he was approached by four Latino men wearing all black clothing, the sergeant said.
The men demanded money and one of them punched the delivery man in the face before stealing $200 from him, along with the pizza, Parnell said. No weapon was seen, and the delivery man was not hospitalized.
The robbers were last seen running eastbound from the area through the Big Dalton Wash, he added. A vinyl pizza bag and a sweater worn by one of the robbers were found discarded nearby.
On Saturday, a similar crime occurred in the same neighborhood, and Parnell said police are looking into the possibility that the crimes are related.
A pizza delivery man was also delivering to an apartment complex in the 3100 block of Vineland Avenue about 10 p.m. when he was robbed by two men with knives, Baldwin Park police Lt. Joe Bartolotti said.
In that case, both cash and pizza were stolen, he said.

Men charged with takeover robberies in West Covina, Baldwin Park

| | Comments (0) |
Officials charged two men Friday with two takeover-style robberies at video game stores in West Covina and Baldwin Park.
Gregory Todd, 22, and Thomas Stringer, 23, were each charged with six counts of robbery and six counts of kidnapping, along with a gang enhancement, according to the felony complaint. A charge was filed for each individual person considered a victim of each individual crime.
The robberies the men are charged with took place Wednesday afternoon at a West Covina Gamestop store, 2360 S. Azusa Ave., and a Baldwin Park Gamestop store, 14460 Merced Ave, Unit 120, authorities said.
In the West Covina crime, three or four men armed with several handguns barged into the store about 6 p.m., West Covina police Sgt. Steve Wheeless said.
"It was a takeover," he said. Though the employees were not tied up, but, "They were moved from the sales portion of the store to a back room," the sergeant said.
The suspects then allegedly helped themselves to cash, video games and electronic equipment from the store, he said.
A citizen helped lead police to an abandoned suspect vehicle near the robbery scene, authorities said.
"It was some time later that a citizen called regarding a suspicious vehicle," he said.
The abandoned vehicle fit the description of the car used in the West Covina robbery and was found nearby, officials added.
Four people were detained in the area and arrested, Wheeless said. Todd and Stringer were ultimately identified as suspects in the robberies, while the other two were released.
A similar robbery was reported about four hours earlier at the other Gamestop location in Baldwin Park, Baldwin Park and West Covina police said.
In that crime, the same two men suspected in the West Covina robbery were identified as suspects in a similar takeover-style robber at the Baldwin Park Gamestop location, Baldwin Park police Sgt. Kevin Gauthier said.
At least one other unidentified robber was believed to be involved in the Baldwin Park crime, as well as two other people who were seen in the getaway vehicle, Gauthier said.
Authorities allege Todd and Stringer are members of the "Swans" street gang, which is affiliated with the Los Angeles gang, the "Bloods".
According to sheriff's booking records, Todd and Stringer were being held in lieu of $100,000 each.
They were scheduled to enter pleas at an arraignment in West Covina Superior Court Friday, however the hearing was delayed until Sept. 28, court officials said.

Baldwin Park police captain saves toddler during lunch break

| | Comments (4) |
BALDWIN PARK -- Baldwin Park police Capt. Michael Taylor sat down at a restaurant Thursday for a grilled chicken lunch, but ended up saving a toddler's life, officials and restaurant employees said.
Taylor said he had just gotten up to pay for his meal about 1 p.m. at the El Llano restaurant, 13720 Ramona Blvd., when he noticed a 1-year-old girl choking.
Her family members desperately patted her on the back to try to free the obstruction -- a tortilla chip -- with no success.
"She was choking to death," Taylor said. "She was turning blue."
Restaurant waitress Julie Jimenez said Taylor immediately sprung into action and performed the Heimlich Maneuver.
"I was so scared," she said. "I was happy he saved the life of the little girl."
After performing the Heimlich Maneuver, the girl appeared to be doing just fine, Taylor said.
"I felt sorry for the family," he said. "They seemed pretty shaken up by the whole thing."
Taylor added he did not tell the "very grateful" family he was a police officer.
Jimenez said she was glad to have Taylor as a regular customer of the restaurant.
"I feel we need more people like that," she said. "I'm very glad that I know Capt. Mike."
Thursday's incident was not the first time Taylor has rescued a choking stranger at a Baldwin Park restaurant, Baldwin Park Mayor Manuel Lozano said.
"It doesn't surprise me, since I've seen it once before," the mayor said of the rescue.
About five years ago, Taylor was having lunch with Lozano at another Baldwin Park restaurant when Taylor noticed a man choking and performed the Heimlich Maneuver, Lozano said.
The mayor added he was amazed by how quickly Taylor reacted to the situation.
"The guy thanked him, and it was amazing," Lozano said. "He told me that it comes with the job."
Taylor said he also once had to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on his own toddler son more than 20 years ago when he choked on a cracker.
The captain encouraged all parents to take a class in basic life-saving procedures, such as the Heimlich Maneuver.
"I'm glad I picked that restaurant to have lunch (Thursday)," Taylor said. "Sometimes, there's a reason for things."
