PASADENA -- Police summoned a bomb squad to the 400 block of North Sierra Madre Boulavard late Wednesday after what appeared to be a small homemade bomb was found, authorities said.
Officers went to a home about 8:20 p.m. to investigate a report of a "suspicious item" found inside, Pasadena police officials said in a written statement.
"The appearance of the item led officers to believe it was a small homemade explosive device," the statement said. "Officers evacuated the home and homes on both sides of the residence as a precaution."
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was called in to deal with the item, officials said.
No further details were available.

UPDATED Update on Pasadena bomb scare; three pipe bombs detonated

PASADENA - A parolee led Pasadena Police on a vehicle chase before barricading himself into an apartment with what authorities believed to have been three pipe bombs, officials said Wednesday.

The pipe bombs were detonated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad on Wednesday morning.

Beau Eginton, 29, of Pasadena, was arrested and booked on felony possession of explosive devices on Wednesday, Pasadena police Lt. Phlunte Riddle said.

Eginton was on parole for possession of methamphetamine, she said.

The chase began Tuesday night when Eginton allegedly failed to yield at traffic stop. Pasadena Police pursued the suspect in his vehicle and then on foot, Riddle said.

Eginton locked himself in his apartment at 201 S. Oak Knoll Ave. in Pasadena.

"A containment was set up and we arrested the suspect," Riddle said. "We returned later to search the apartment with the owner's permission and found the devices."

The Sheriff's Bomb Squad robot removed the pipe bombs, each of which was exploded separately during the course of the morning.

Pasadena police had "no idea where (Eginton) got the explosives," Riddle said.

Pasadena police detectives were scheduled to interogate Eginton on Wednesday afternoon.

GLENDORA - An anonymous call about a bomb at Citrus College led to the entire campus being evacuated Thursday.

Paula Green, spokeswoman for the college at 1000 W. Foothill Blvd., said no bomb was found.

The incident started at 2:40 p.m.

The school received a brief, "very cursory" phone call saying that there was a bomb on the campus, Glendora police Lt. Rob Lamborghini said.

The caller didn't specify where the bomb was located.

Green said all buildings on campus were evacuated and searched. At about 5 p.m. an alert was sent out campus-wide that everything is all clear and normal operations should resume, according to Green.

Suspicious package prompts bomb squad response in Azusa

| | Comments (0) |
AZUSA -- Bomb squad officials examined a suspicious box abandoned on an Azusa sidewalk late Tuesday, ultimately determining it contained only food, officials said.
Someone called police about 9:20 p.m. to report a 2-foot by 2-foot box, wrapped in plastic, that had been left on a sidewalk near Azusa Avenue and San Gabriel Canyon Road, Azusa police Sgt. John Madaloni said in a written statement.
The package could not be readily identified, and no one claimed it, the sergeant said.
"Taking no unnecessary risks in handling the package, officers  summoned the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Arson Explosive Detail," he said.
"They were able to safely inspect the package and deemed it safe for handling after discovering only harmless food items inside."
The area was cordoned off for about 90 minutes during the investigation, police said.

Artillery shell at Mt. SAC determined to be inert

| | Comments (0) |
WALNUT -- The sheriff's bomb squad went to Mt. San Antonio College Thursday and determined an artillery shell brought to the campus was an inert display piece, authorities said.
Deputies were alerted about 4:37 p.m. that someone had brought what appeared to be a 40mm artillery shell to Mt. SAC, 1100 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. John Saleeby said.
Deputies evacuated the building and called for the bomb squad, the lieutenant said.
The bomb squad arrived at building 60 -- listen on the campus website as a science building -- and determined that the shell contained no explosives and was merely a display piece, the lieutenant said.
Officials sounded the all-clear about 6 p.m.
The reason the shell was brought to the school and who brought were not available, Saleeby said, however it appeared no crime had been committed.

Grenade detonated in front of Arcadia Police Department

ARCADIA -- The bomb squad detonated a live World War I and II-era grenade on the lawn in front of the Arcadia Police Department Wednesday after a woman brought the explosive to the police station, authorities said.
A woman in her 60s, who was staying with friends in Arcadia, found the grenade in the garage of her former residence in Los Angeles, Arcadia police Sgt. Tom Le Veque said. She brought it to the Arcadia police station, 250 W. Huntington Drive, about 3 p.m.
Police called in the Los Angeles County sheriff's bomb squad, who removed the grenade from the woman's car and decided the safest move would be to detonate it right there.
"They ended up asking public works to come out and they dug a hole on the lawn outside the police department -- several feet deep with sandbags," Le Veque said.
Bomb squad members placed the grenade in the hole, covered it and set it off, police said.
Arcadia resident Faith Arnold said she found the British grenade in her deceased father's possessions and was unsure what to do with it. Her father was a WWII veteran.
"Once we got to the police station they told us it was a live World War I hand grenade," Arnold said.
In a written statement, Arcadia police officials said, "The grenade was a live 'Mills Bomb' commonly used by British military from 1915-1970s."
Arnold added experts believed the grenade came from India, and her father likely brought it home from there.
The man kept the grenade in his Glassell Park garage for years.
Once the bomb squad detonated the device it "disintegrated," Arnold said. She said the Arcadia Police Department recovered only the safety pin and may return it to her as a souvenir.

The incident lasted about three hours, Le Veque said. Nearby city buildings remained open, though the south-facing entrances and exits were blocked.
Le Veque advised anyone who finds any explosive not to move it. Leave it in place and call the police.
Older explosives, especially, can deteriorate and become unsafe to handle or transport, he added.
This type of incident is actually, "not that uncommon," Le Veque said. "We probably get one or two of this type of incident every year."

Man arrested on explosives charge in Arcadia after bombs scare

JOSHUA PARRADAVIS.JPG
ARCADIA - A 23-year-old man was in custody Friday after he entered Foothills Middle School, was asked to leave by school officials and then left what appeared to be a "homemade explosive device" near a Foothill Boulevard bank, school district and police officials said.
Joshua Parradavis, 23, of Arcadia was booked on suspicion of possession of an explosive device, Arcadia police Lt. Paul Foley said.
The Bank of America, the McDonald's and a strip mall parking lot on Foothill Avenue were among the areas evacuated for a few hours until the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad successfully detonated the device in the early afternoon. Traffic was also blocked with police cars between First and Second Avenues during this time.
"We were checking the backpack, found a suspicious item and called the bomb squad on it," Police Sgt. Vaughn Whalen said at the scene. "They have since done whatever the bomb squad does back there."
The suspect, later identified as Parradavis, was at the middle school's campus trying to open up classroom doors before he was asked to leave and school officials called the police about 10 a.m.
He told someone at the school he was a former student, though it was not clear late Friday if that was true.
The suspect left the school and was seen dropping a backpack in bushes near the Bank of America and then ran through the parking lot where officers detained him, police officials said.
After the police found the suspicious device, the school was directed to go into lockdown while officers searched the school for anything out of the ordinary, said Arcadia Unified School District Superintendent Joel Shawn.
The suspicious device was described by police as having the appearance of a metal pipe bomb.
Nothing was found and the school was released from lockdown at about 1:30 p.m. after the object was detonated, he said.
"We have no idea why (the suspect) was on campus," Shawn said. "He was not supposed to be on campus."
There was no immediate danger to students or staff and procedures were implemented "flawlessly," he said, adding that he was thankful for Arcadia police, fire and county sheriff's departments that cooperated to resolve the incident.
About 16 McDonald's employees were sitting outside a nearby KFC restaurant eating their lunch, waiting to be allowed back inside early Friday afternoon.
"They just told us to get outside and here we are," said one employee, who declined to give his name, shortly before he and other employees were allowed back inside around 1:15 p.m.
According to sheriff's booking records, Parradavis was being held in lieu of $500,521 bail and was due for arraignment Tuesday in Pasadena Superior Court.
The incident is being investigated by Arcadia police, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Arson-Explosives Detail and the FBI.

Crudely made explosive device found in Azusa mobile home park

| | Comments (0) |
AZUSA -- A sheriff's bomb squad investigated a "crudely constructed and non-functioning" explosive device found Sunday in a vacant mobile home, police said.
The manager of a mobile home park in the 700 block of North Loren Avenue was cleaning a vacant unit about 4 p.m. when she discovered the device, Azusa police Lt. Mike Bertelsen said.
The device resembled "two aerosol canisters taped together, with some lighters and fireworks attached to the top of canisters," the lieutenant said.
Police evacuated the mobile home park and called in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad, the lieutenant said.
Bomb squad officials determined, "the device was crudely constructed and non-functioning," he added. "They disassembled the device rendered it safe."
Residents of the mobile home park were allowed to return to their homes about 6 p.m., police said.
Police continued to investigate who was responsible for leaving the the device in the mobile home, which had been vacant for at least two months.

BB guns, inert grenades, ammunition causes scare at Temple City church

| | Comments (0) |
TEMPLE CITY -- BB guns, bullets and inert grenades left in a Temple City church Friday prompted officials to call in the bomb squad, authorities said.
Officials received a call about 3:30 p.m. reporting a possible explosive device left inside the Victory in Christ Church, 5221 El Monte Ave., Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Richard Conti said.
Deputies evacuated the area around the church and called for the sheriff's bomb squad to investigate a box found inside the church filled with suspicious contents.
The bomb squad determined that the box contained BB guns, bullets and grenades that had had the explosives removed, Conti said, and sounded the all-clear shortly after 6 p.m.
Deputies were investigating who left the items at the church and why.
