Woman robbed in Irwindale after arranging Craigslist transaction, 2 suspects jailed

IRWINDALE >> Police, aided by a good Samaritan, jailed two men after they robbed a woman of an iPhone in front of an Irwindale coffee shop after she arranged to sell the device online, authorities said.
Justin Mitchell Huff, 19, of Riverside was arrested for robbery and resisting arrest, and Bryan Joseph Gomez, 19, of Huntington Park was arrested for robbery, conspiracy, hit-and-run and resisting arrest, according to Irwindale police officials and Los Angeles County booking records.
A woman had arranged to sell her iPhone 7 via Craigslist and met the purported buyer shortly after noon outside a Starbucks, 15700 Arrow Highway, Irwindale police Sgt. George Zendejas said.
“When the victim arrived, she met the suspect to the front of the store and the suspect forcefully took the phone from the victim, struggling and pushing her in the process,” police said in a written statement. “The victim sustained minor scratches from the altercation.”
A good Samaritan saw the robbery occur and watches as the robber hopped into a getaway car with a driver waiting at the wheel.
The witnesses called police and followed behind the suspects car, Zendejas said.
The suspects crashed into a parked car in the 4700 block of Irwindale Avenue and continued to flee on foot, police said.
“Officers converged in the area and located the two outstanding suspects in the area of Fraijo Avenue near Burrola Street,” according to the statement. Huff and his alleged getaway driver, Gomez, were arrested without a struggle.
Officers also recovered a replica handgun from the suspects’ car, Zendejas said.

According to booking records, Huff and Gomez were being held in lieu of $100,000 bail each pending their initial court appearances.
In an effort to combat exactly this type of crime, Irwindale police officials in May unveiled an e-commerce and child custody exchange “safe zone,” monitored by surveillance cameras, in front of the Irwindale Police Department at 5050 N. Irwindale Ave.
“The purpose of the designated parking spots is to help ease the worry that a crime may occur during these types of encounters,” police said in a statement.

Sports writer’s freelance job runs afoul of the law

A longtime sports writer for the Union Leader newspaper has been suspended after being arrested earlier today for pimping out a prostitute at a Marriott hotel in Andover.
Kevin Provencher, 50, of Manchester, N.H., was scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Lawrence District Court on two counts of deriving support from a prostitute. 


He was picked up in New Hampshire earlier today.

The Union Leader issued a statement: ‘Mr. Provencher has been a valued employee for many years. He is innocent until proven guilty. However, given the nature and seriousness of the charges, he is suspended until further notice.”

Man beaten, robbed during Craiglslist meeting

AZUSA — Attackers beat and robbed man Wednesday after he met a woman at a local motel through a Craigslist advertisement, police said.
The incident occurred about 3 a.m. at a motel in the 400 block of East Arrow Highway, Azusa police said in a written statement.
Officials suspected the woman may have been involved in the robbery, however it was too early in the investigation to know for sure, Azusa police Lt. Paul Dennis said.
“It’s possible that this was a set up, although we can’t confirm it,” he said.
The man, estimated to be in his 50s, met a woman who identified herself as Kathy on Craigslist, and the two agreed to meet in a motel room, police said.
They woman and man drank together and began getting intimate when the woman excused herself to go to a nearby store, Dennis said.
“A few moments later, there’s a knock at the door,” he said.
When the man answered, two robbers beat him up, took his wallet containing cash and fled, the lieutenant said. He refused hospitalization.
Dennis added that the woman did not return to the motel room. Police could not confirm why the man and women had agreed to meet at the motel.
Authorities described the robbers as a white man in his late 20s with blonde hair and blue eyes and a white man in his early 50s with grey hair.

Suspect in New England murders kept mementos

Police searching the Quincy apartment of Philip Markoff found underwear from two of the victims in the Craigslist attacks and a handgun hidden in a hollowed-out copy of the medical textbook Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation.


The underpants were described as “mementos” from the crimes, according to another law enforcement official, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity. It was not known from which victims the garments were taken, the officials said. Investigators are testing the gun to determine whether the semi-automatic weapon was used to fatally shoot a 26-year-old masseuse last week at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.

Markoff, 23, is a Boston University medical school student whopleaded not guilty yesterdayto charges stemming from attacks against two women in posh Back Bay hotels. Police in Warwick, R.I., say a prostitute who also advertised on Craigslist was attacked in a hotel there last Thursday,but Markoff has not been charged with that crime. No new victims have come forward so far, one of the law enforcement officials said today.

Authorities have said that his alleged crimes may have been motivated by a gambling problem and a desire to dominate his victims.
