DIAMOND BAR >> Detectives have circulated flyers seeking information on the unsolved “brutal” stabbing deaths of a couple inside their Diamond Bar home earlier this month.
Chen “David” Long Wang, 60, and his wife Mei “Marian” Chu Chung, 57, were discovered fatally stabbed on the morning of Oct. 20 inside their home in the 3300 block of Bent Twig Lane, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s and coroner’s officials.
“Sometime between Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 7 p,m. and Thursday October 20, 2016 at 9 a.m., avid table tennis player and retired father of two, victim “David” Cheng Long Wang ,was brutally murdered in his Diamond Bar home along with his wife, victim “Marian” Mei Chu Chung,” sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
Neighbors described Chung as an art teacher who taught classes out of her home.
After more than a week of investigation but no suspect in custody, detectives reached out to the public for assistance in solving the double slaying.
Officials this week have been handing out flyers featuring information about the crime and pictures of the victim in hopes of generating tips, Lt. John Corina of the sheriff’s homicide Bureau said.
“Detectives are seeking the public’s assistance and are asking any witnesses or anyone with information to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau,” sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
Wang and Chung are survived by two college-age children, officials said.
One of the children called a friend to check on the couple after not hearing from them for a while, Corina said. The friend went to the home and discovered the victims’ bodies.
Corina said there were signs of a struggle inside the home, but there were no indications the couple had been robbed. The motive in the double-fatal stabbing remained a mystery.
The bodies of Wang and Chung were found in different rooms in the house, officials said. The weapon used in the killings has not been recovered.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Couple found stabbed to death inside Diamond Bar home

DIAMOND BAR >> Detectives are investigating the deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were discovered inside their Diamond Bar home early Thursday as a possible double-homicide, officials said.
The deaths, initially reported by sheriff’s officials as stabbings, were reported just before 9:45 a.m. at a home in the 3300 block of Bent Twig Lane, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
Both the man and woman, described as an Asian couple in their 50s or 60s, were pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said. Coroner’s officials had yet to identify the man and woman.
One of the couple’s children, who are away at college, became concerned after not hearing from the couple for a while, the lieutenant said.
The child contacted a friend and asked the friend to check on the man and woman, Corina said. It was then that the friend discovered the bodies.
“We’re treating it as (double-) murder right now. It doesn’t look like a murder-suicide,” Corina said. “That’s the way we’re going to treat it until we learn otherwise.”
But he added that the investigation remained in its early stages, and nothing had been ruled out.
Though initially described by officials as a double-stabbing, Corina said he could not confirm how the couple died.
“It certainly doesn’t look like a natural death or deaths,” he said. “We don’t know the why and how of how they were killed.”
There were no signs the home had been ransacked.
“It doesn’t appear to be robbery or burglary,” Corina said.
Detectives continued speaking with neighbors and family members to learn about the couple and determine when they were last been seen alive, he added.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tipsters can call L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Man sentenced for 1994 slaying of Diamond Bar gas station attendant

DIAMOND BAR >> A judge sentenced a man to life in prison for the fatal shooting of an Anaheim man during a botched robbery in Diamond Bar more than 22 years ago.
A jury convicted Lino Acero, 39, in March of first-degree murder for the Nov. 18, 1994 slaying 42-year-old Mahfouz Ghabour of Anaheim. The jury also found true the special allegations that Acero personally used a handgun in the crime.
At his sentencing in the Pomona branch of Los Angeles Superior Court, he received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani.
Ghabour was working at an ARCO gas station on Diamond Bar Boulevard when Acero and a still-unidentified accomplice entered.
“During the failed robbery, one of the suspects fatally shot Ghabour,” Ardalani said in a written statement. The two killers then fled empty handed.
Jurors were shown surveillance video of the killing during the trial.
In the video, “Acero is seen entering an employee hatch to get behind the counter before pulling out a gun,” Ardalani said. “Ghabour then grasps his chest and starts to bleed before he falls to the floor.”
The two killers fled the scene. The case would remain unsolved for more than 20 years.
Despite an exhaustive homicide investigation, the case went cold, officials said.
Ten years later, Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives who were continuing the investigation had the surveillance video of the shooting featured on television.
“The video’s appearance on TV led to a tip on the shooter, however detectives needed to continue to investigate the case,” Ardalani said.
Authorities arrested and charged Acero in connection with the killing in June of 2014.

Diamond Bar gas station robbed by masked gunman; similar crime reported in San Dimas

DIAMOND BAR >> A gunman wearing a surgical mask robbed a Diamond Bar gas station Monday, one day after a strikingly similar crime was reported at a gas station in San Dimas, authorities said.
The Diamond Bar robbery took place about 11:20 a.m. at a Shell station at Diamond Bar Boulevard and Brea Canyon Road, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Brian Mitchell said.
Officials said the suspect brandished a small, silver revolver and demanded cash from the clerk. The gunman fled with a little more than $400.
He was last seen driving away in a gray, four-door, early-2000s model Acura, Mitchell said.
Deputies described the robber as a white man of about 5 feet 9 inches tall, 180 pounds, with short black or gray hair.
He wore a white disposable surgical mask, sunglasses, blue denim shorts, black shoes, a black hat and a blue surgical scrub shirt over a blue, long-sleeve shirt.
Detectives were looking into the possibility the crime was related to another gas station robbery reported late Sunday morning at a Mobile Station, 845 W. Arrow Highway in San Dimas, Mitchell said.
In that case, witnesses described the robber as having a similar physical appearance, Sgt. Terrence Smith said. He also wore a surgical mask, carried a small, silver handgun and fled the scene in a gray imported car with 7 as the first digit in the license plate.
The gunman fled with about $500 in Sunday’s robbery, Smith said.
Investigators were also working with other area law enforcement agencies to see if any other similar robberies have been reported lately.
Anyone with information can reach the sheriff’s Walnut-Diamond Bar Station at 626-913-1715, or the sheriff’s San Dimas Station at 909-450-2709. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

DIAMOND BAR >> Deputies tried their hand at goat-herding Wednesday after about 70 goats escaped from a Diamond Bar field where they were being used to clear brush, authorities said.
Deputies first received a report just before midnight on Tuesday that a large group of goats had broken loose and was wandering in the area of Canyon Ridge Road, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Hugo Reynaga said.
0729_NWS_SGT-L-GOATS2Officials did not locate the wayward herd in the darkness, he said. But about 6:30 Wednesday morning, a second caller reported seeing the goats wandering along Fallow Field Drive, chomping on grass as the went.
“Deputy (Aaron) Scheller was able to corral the goats in the front yard of a residence, turn them around and herd them back to a nearby open field,” sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
“Apparently, over 200 goats had been brought in to clear the open field of dry overgrown brush and grass. However, sometime during the night, they hatched their escape plan by pushing over a perimeter fence,” the statement said. “It took two hours but all of the 200 goats were captured and returned to their corral.”
“One of the great parts of a law enforcement career is the variety,” the statement continued. “Every day there is something new.”
