Woman killed in La Habra crash identified

LA HABRA >> Authorities have released the identity of a 72-year-old Los Angeles woman who died in a two-vehicle crash in La Habra over the weekend that also left another woman and two children injured.
Ching Liu died at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton shortly after the collision, which took place about 9:50 p.m. Friday at Harbor Boulevard and Arbolita Street, according to Orange County coroner’s records. She was a passenger in a car that collided with an SUV.
La Habra police, who are handling the investigation, released few details about the circumstances of the crash.
Another woman who was riding along with Liu suffered injuries in the crash, as well as two children who were riding as passengers in the SUV, La Habra police officials said in a written statement.
An update on the conditions of those injured was not available.
The crash was being investigated by the La Habra Police Department’s Traffic Unit. Anyone with information can reach police at 562-383-4300.

LA HABRA >> A woman died in a two-car crash that left another woman and two children injured late Friday, police said.
The fatal collision took place about 9:50 p.m. at Harbor Boulevard and Arbolita Street, La Habra police officials said in a written statement.
“Officers arrived and located a traffic collision involving two vehicles,” according to the statement. “Two adult females from one vehicle and two children from the second vehicle were injured.
All four injured people were taken to hospitals, where one of the women ultimately succumbed to her injuries, authorities said. Her identity was not released Saturday.
Further details regarding the circumstances of the crash were not available.

Man shot in the face in La Habra

LA HABRA >> A man remained hospitalized Sunday with a gunshot wound to his face following shooting in a residential neighborhood in La Habra Friday night, officials said.
The circumstances of the 10:05 p.m. shooting in the 700 block of West Rye Avenue remained unclear, La Habra police Sgt. Clint Angle said.
The wounded, a 24-year-old La Habra man, suffered a gunshot wound that shattered his jaw, but was expected to survive, officials said. But his medical condition prevented investigators from communicating with him.
Police first responded to the neighborhood and found the victim after receiving several reports of an argument and a gunshot heard, Angle said.
Witnesses indicated the victim had been chasing two others — described as male teens in dark clothing — down the street prior to the shot ringing out, the sergeant said.
But it remained unclear whether the teens who were being chased fired on their pursuer, or if the man accidentally shot himself, he said.
A single spent bullet casing was found at the scene, but no gun.
Investigators suspected the incident was gang-related.

Police checkpoint planned in La Habra

LA HABRA >> Police are planning to screen drivers for sobriety and valid licenses during a checkpoint in La Habra next week, officials said.
The checkpoint will take place from 9 p.m. April 15 to 3 a.m. April 16 at an undisclosed location within the city, La Habra police officials said in a written statement.
Over the past three years alone, La Habra police have investigated 146 DUI-related crashes, which resulted in two deaths and 84 injuries, police said.
Funding for the checkpoint is being provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

La Habra man killed, two others injured in solo-car crash

LA HABRA >> A 20-year-old La Habra man died and two others were seriously hurt in a violent solo-car crash early Saturday, authorities said.
Paramedics pronounced Miguel Martinez Jr. dead at the scene of the 12:15 a.m. crash on westbound La Habra Boulevard, just west of McPherson Street, according to Orange County coroner’s officials.
He was believed to be a passenger in the Nissan Maxima, which veered to the right side of the road and sheared off a fire hydrant before striking a small tree and a large palm tree, La Habra police Lt. Dan Henderson said.
“Everyone in the vehicle was ejected,” he said.
The driver and a second passenger of the car, both described as La Habra men in their late-teens to early-20s, were hospitalized.
“Out last update from the hospital is that they are in serious-but-stable condition,” Henderson said.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation, police said in a written statement. “However, speed and failing to wear safety belts are contributing factors.”

La Habra Boulevard remained shut down in both directions until 7:30 a.m. as police carried out their investigation.

La Habra police shoot suspect in Whittier

WHITTIER >> La Habra police shot and wounded a suspect during an encounter in Whittier late Sunday, officials said.
The suspect, initially described only as an adult, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries following the officer-involved shooting, La Habra Police Sgt. Kyle Davis said.
Officers were following up on a theft investigation shortly after 7:30 p.m. when they encountered the man in the area of Russell Street and Tigrina Avenue and the shooting took place, he said. No officers were injured.
No further details were available.

La Habra search warrant nets 3 arrests, 36 guns, 40 pounds of marijuana, $44,700 cash

LA HABRA >> Police arrested three people and seized a large cache of guns, including assault weapons, marijuana and cash during three early-morning raids in La Habra stemming from an ongoing drug investigation, authorities said.
La Habra police were joined by local, county and federal counterparts as they carried out search warrants about 3 a.m. in the 1400 block of West Lambert Road, the 1200 block of North Cypress Street and the 600 block of South Palm Avenue, La Habra police officials said in written statement.
“Searches at these locations led to the discovery and confiscation of 11 assault rifles, 25 handguns, 12 illegal 30-round assault rifle magazines, and parts to build another 12 assault rifles,” according to the police statement.
Investigators also seized about 40 pounds of marijuana and $44,600 in suspected drug proceeds, police said.
Arrested were Adam James Kinney, 28, Grant David Winn, 30, and Kristina Thompson, 25, all of La Habra, according to La Habra police and Orange County booking records.
They were booked on suspicion of drug-related crimes, as well as child endangerment, officials said.
Kinney was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending his initial court appearance, while Winn and Thompson were being held in lieu of $100,000 bail each, records show.

Man robs La Habra supermarket

LA HABRA >> A man claiming to be armed with a gun and pepper spray robbed a La Habra Vons supermarket Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The crime took place just before 3 p.m. at the market at the corner of Imperial Highway and Beach Boulevard, La Habra police Sgt. Jose Rocha said.
The robber approached an employee at the customer service counter and demanded money, the sergeant said. He claimed to have a gun and pepper spray, though neither were seen.
After obtaining an estimated $1,500, the robber ran from the store, he said. No getaway car was seen.

Man accused of abducting daughter from La Habra, fleeing to Guatemala denies charge

FULLERTON >> A man accused of abducting his then-4-year-old La Habra girl from her mother and keeping her in Guatemala for more than a year pleaded not guilty Friday to a child abduction charge, officials said.
Felipe Alexander Delgado, 23, picked up his daughter from the home of her mother on July 26,2014, La Habra police and Orange County District Attorney’s officials said in a written statement.
Delgado, who had formerly been involved in a romantic relationship with the girl’s mother and had no formal custody agreement, was supposed to return the girl home after a day trip to the beach, officials said.
Instead, “Delgado is accused abducting (the girl) by forcing her to travel with him to Guatemala and not telling her mother where he was taking the child.
The mother reported her daughter missing to La Habra police the following day, according to the joint statement. Soon after, “the defendant is accused of calling (the mother) from an unlisted number and would not tell her where he and the child were and refused to bring her back.”
But Guatemalan authorities deported Delgado back to the U.S. Sept. 5 after arresting him on a warrant, officials said. The girl and mother were reunited Aug. 28.
Delgado pleaded not guilty to a charge of felony child abduction charge Friday in Orange County Superior Court, records show. He was scheduled to return to court Nov. 16 for a pre-trial hearing.
If convicted as charged, Delgado faces up to three years in state prison.

Two DUI suspects arrested at La Habra checkpoint

LA HABRA >> Police arrested two intoxicated driving suspects late Friday and earl Saturday during a sobriety and license checkpoint, officials said.
The checkpoint was held from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at La Habra Boulevard near Euclid Avenue, in front of the police station, La Habra police Sgt. Jeff Baylos said.
Of 358 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, nine were singled out for additional scrutiny, and five drivers were given roadside sobriety tests, police said in a written statement.
Two drivers were ultimately jailed on suspicion of DUI, and two other drivers were cited for driving without licenses, according to the statement.
Police impounded three cars and released one to different licensed driver at the scene, officials added.
