Officials: Resident shoots knife-wielding intruder in Norwalk


NORWALK >> A Norwalk man shot and wounded a knife-wielding intruder who broke into his home while his family was inside early Sunday, officials said.
The break-in and shooting took place about 2:30 a.m. at a house in the 14400 block of Graystone Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Rene Garcia said.
A woman at the home was firs alerted by noises coming from the front of the house, the sergeant said. Children were also present at the home.
“The suspect proceeded to go to the rear of the residence, where he broke through french doors armed with a knife,” Garcia said.
The male resident shot the armed intruder in the torso, he said.
“The suspect fled from the scene, however, he was taken into custody about a block away,” Garcia said.
Officials took the wounded suspect to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, he said. His identity was not available pending the booking process.
None of the family members inside the home were hurt, according to the sergeant.
The resident who shot the burglar was not arrested as detectives continued investigating what initially appeared to be self-defense, he said.

Man wounded in Norwalk shooting


NORWALK >> A Norwalk man was hospitalized in critical-but-stable condition after he was shot multiple times during an argument outside a Norwalk strip mall Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The shooting took place about 1:55 p.m. in the 15000 block of Pioneer Boulevard, just south of Excelsior Drive, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Robin Limon said.
The victim, a man in his mid-30s, became involved in an argument with another man, the lieutenant said. It was unclear what the dispute was about.
The argument escalated into a fight, and the attacker pulled a handgun and fired 10 rounds from a 9mm handgun, she said. The victim was struck multiple times in the torso and legs.
Paramedics took the wounded man to a hospital, where he was expected to survive his injuries.
The shooter was described as a Latino man in his 30s, last seen driving north on Pioneer Boulevard in a tan, four-door sedan, Limon said.
The motive was not immediately clear, however sheriff’s gang investigators were spearheading the investigation.

Compton man accused of shooting ex-girlfriend’s car in Norwalk


NORWALK >> An argument between a man and his girlfriend escalated into a shooting late Saturday when the man fired at the woman’s car, striking the vehicle but missing her, officials said.
Jacquise Oshay Hooper, 22, of Compton was ultimately arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting, which occurred just before 8 p.m. at a condominium complex in the 12000 block of Quail Lane, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Eric Smitson said.
Hooper showed up to see his ex-girlfriend and became involved in an argument, the lieutenant said.
As the woman tried to get into her car, Hooper fired twice with a handgun, he said.
The car was struck, but the woman escaped injury, Smitson said.
Deputies found and arrested Hooper nearby, he said. A gun was found discarded in the area.
According to booking records, Hooper was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending his arraignment hearing, scheduled Tuesday in the Bellflower branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Underground explosion flips SUV along Bloomfield Avenue in Norwalk


NORWALK >> A freak explosion blew off a manhole cover along Bloomfield Avenue, tossing a passing SUV end over end, but resulting in only minor injuries to the driver Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
The bizarre mishap took place just before 6 p.m. on Bloomfield Avenue, just north of Foster Road, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Robin Limon said.
A woman was driving a Toyota SUV north along Bloomfield when a manhole cover, apparently atop an underground electrical vault, suddenly erupted upward, driven by an underground explosion, the lieutenant said.
The force of the explosion flipped the SUV upside down, ultimately coming to a rest on its side, Limon said.
The woman at the wheel was taken to a nearby hospital for examination but appeared to have suffered only bumps and bruises, the said.
The incident resulted in a power outage in the area that initially affected more than 2,000 Southern California Edison customers, SCE spokesman Paul Netter said. Within about half an hour, however, all but 41 customers’ power had been restored, he said. Most customers were expected to have their electricity back by the early morning hours Thursday.
“We have personnel at the scene. We don’t know the cause yet, but we’re investigating,” Netter said.

Man gravely wounded in Norwalk shooting


NORWALK >> A man was hospitalized in grave condition Sunday after he was shot in a residential Norwalk neighborhood late Saturday, authorities said.
The shooting was first reported at 11:33 p.m. in the 14400 block of Claressa Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Hank Ortega said.
The victim, 33, was believed to be walking down the street when an attacker or attackers approached in a dark-colored vehicle and opened fire, the sergeant said.
Paramedics took the wounded man to a hospital, where he was listed in grave condition, Ortega said.
No further details regarding the circumstances of the shooting were available as the investigation continued Sunday afternoon.

UPDATED: Driver arrested after wild chase ends in Hacienda Heights


HACIENDA HEIGHTS >> A man in a stolen Honda Accord led California Highway Patrol officers on a chase that began in Norwalk and wound through the Whittier area before being captured in Hacienda Heights Friday afternoon.
The chase began at 3:04 p.m. at the intersection of the 605 and 105 freeways in Norwalk, CHP Officer Jennifer Bond said.
An officer spotted the car driving along the shoulder of the northbound 605 Freeway, Officer Kevin Tao said. The driver refused to pull over, initiating a chase. Pursuing officers soon determined that the Accord had been reported stolen.
The driver exited the freeway at Whittier Boulevard and drove through Montebello on surface streets before returning the the northbound 605 Freeway via Telegraph Road, Tao said.
The chase then worked it’s way to Washington Boulevard in Whittier, where the car exited the freeway and drove to Turnbull Canyon via city streets. Officers cancelled their pursuit as the driver continued up the winding and narrow Turnbull Canyon Road into Hacienda Heights, officials said.
The driver jumped fro the still-rolling car about 3:40 p.m., allowing the car to strike a dirt embankment near Blue Sky and Holly Tree roads in Hacienda Heights, Tao said.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies then launched a neighborhood search for the suspect as he continued fleeing on foot.
Deputies found and arrested the suspect in the area about 4:20 a.m., sheriff’s Lt. David Infante said.

Officials: Sex offender tried to abduct girl from Norwalk Park

NORWALK >> Detectives are seeking possible additional victims of a 54-year-old sex offender caught trying to lure a 10-year-old girl into his car at a Norwalk park over the weekend, officials said.
Armando Hernandez of Norwalk had children’s pamphlets from a church, as well as an extra license plate, inside his car at the time of his arrest about 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Norwalk Park, 13000 Clarkdale Ave., Los Angeles County sheriff’s Detective Henry Jaquez said in a written statement.
He tried to abduct the girl shortly after 6:40 p.m., authorities said.
“(Hernandez) attempted to pull the victim, a 10-year-old girl, into a 2000 tan Toyota Corolla, licence plate 7PMD192,” Jaquez said.
The girl’s parents saw what was happening and yelled at the would-be kidnapper, who released the girl, Lt. Robin Limon said.
Responding deputies soon found the suspect, later identified as Hernandez.
Along with two hats and a red flannel shirt, deputies pamphlets for a children’s ministry at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Paramount, as well as a second license plate with a number of 4YRT979 in the trunk, according to a flyer issued by the sheriff’s department.
His car was further described as having a black hood and front fenders and dented rear quarter panels on both sides.
According to California’s online database of registered sex offenders, Hernandez has a previous conviction for annoying or molesting a minor.
He was being held without bail pending a scheduled appearance Friday in Norwalk Superior Court, Los Angeles County booking records show.

Man wounded, woman sought in Norwalk shooting


Deputies are seeking a woman who shot and wounded a man along Pioneer Boulevard in Norwalk early Saturday, officials said.

Deputies were called at 12:42 a.m. to a shooting in the 14000 block of Pioneer Boulevard, just north of Rosecrans Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Anthony Fernandez said.
Paramedics took the victim, described only as a man, to a hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, officials said. He was shot in the chest.
The shooter was described as a woman, Fernandez said.
The motive in the shooting was unclear Saturday. No further details were available as the investigation continued.

Teen wounded in Norwalk shooting


NORWALK >> A teenage boy suffered wounds late Wednesday in a shooting in a residential neighborhood in Norwalk, authorities said.
The gunfire was firs reported about 7:15 p.m. in the 12100 block of Hopland Street, Los Angeles Couny sheriff’s L. Robin Limon said.
The victim, believed to be 17 years old, suffered gunshot wounds to his back and was taken to a hospital for treatment, she said. An update on his condition was not available.
Deputies were working to sort out conflicting descriptions of the shooter and a getaway car Wednesday night, Limon said.

Man sought in follow-home robbery of Santa Fe Springs woman

SANTA FE SPRINGS >> Police are seeking a robber who followed a Santa Fe Springs woman home before robbing her at her doorstep earlier this month.
The crime took place about 10 a.m. March 5, Whittier police officials said in a written statement.
“We believe the suspect followed the victim from the area of Norwalk Boulevard and Imperial Highway (in Norwalk) driving a two-door, 1995-2000 red Dodge Avenger with no hubcaps,” according to the statement.
When the woman arrived home, the robber accosted her at her doorstep and robber her of her purse, police said.
Authorities described the robber as a black man in his early-30s, about 6 feet tall, of thin build, with a short beard.
