Man shot outside San Dimas market

SAN DIMAS >> A man shot and wounded another man in the parking lot of a San Dimas market late Wednesday, officials said.
The victim, described as a man in his 20s, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg in the 7 p.m. shooting outside Ranch Town Liquor & Deli, 1112 N. San Dimas Ave., Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Tonya Edwards said.
He was on foot in the parking lot when the attacker, who was sitting in a dark minivan or truck, said something to him, the lieutenant said.
The victim was unable to understand what the man told him, so he walked closer, Edwards said. The man again said something to the victim, which he could not understand, before jumping out of the vehicle and opening fire.
Edwards said the victim was struck in the leg and taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. A detailed description of the shooter was not available.
The motive in the attack remained unclear as the investigation continued Wednesday night.

Temple City woman dies in crash on 210 Freeway in San Dimas

SAN DIMAS >> A Temple City woman died early Saturday in a three-vehicle crash on the 210 Freeway in San Dimas, authorities said.
Linda Marie Vasquez, 35, died at the scene of the 5:15 a.m. crash in the westbound lanes of the 210 Freeway, just west of San Dimas Avenue, according to Los Angeles County coroner and California Highway Patrol officials.
The collision involved Vasquez’s 2005 Scion xA, a 2004 Ford F-550 pickup truck towing a trailer and a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, Officer S. Stoos of the CHP’s Baldwin Park area office said in a written statement.
Vasquez was driving in the fast lane when she made an “unsafe lane change” to the No. 3 lane, the officer said. The front of the Scion struck the trailer of the Ford pickup, sending the Scion spinning out of control.
The Scion ended up “directly in front of” the Toyota Tacoma in the No. 4 lane, Stoos said. The Toyota driver was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision, and the Toyota struck the Scion on its passenger side.
A 38-year-old San Bernardino man driving the Ford truck and a 53-year-old Fontana man driving the Toyota truck were not injured, officials said.
Officials shut down the four right-hand lanes of the freeway for about four hours following the crash.

UPDATED: Suspects in San Dimas, Diamond Bar robberies arrested after chase

A man and woman carried out a robbery in San Dimas and an attempted robbery in Diamond Bar before fleeing from deputies in the wrong direction down the 60 and 57 freeways, crashing their car and being arrested, authorities said.
The series of crimes began about 12:30 when the two suspects robbed a woman of her purse at gunpoint in a commercial area in the 100 block of East Via Verde in San Dimas, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Tonya Edwards said.
A man pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her purse before driving off in a getaway car with a female accomplice riding in the passenger seat, Edwards said.
About 15 minutes later, deputies received a report of a second crime along Sunset Crossing Road near the 57 Freeway in Diamond Bar, sheriff’s Lt. John Saleeby said.
A man and woman brandished a gun at a man and demanded property, but fled empty-handed after he told them he had nothing to take, Saleeby said.
Within minutes, deputies spotted a car matching the description of the robbers’ vehicle driving on Grand Avenue along the border between Diamond Bar and Walnut, Saleeby said.
They began a pursuit, but quickly cancelled it when the fleeing Toyota Corolla got onto the 60 Freeway, heading eastbound in the westbound traffic lanes, officials said.
The car continued fleeing, heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the 57 Freeway, Saleeby said. The car ultimately crashed into a cinder block wall at the 57 Freeway and Pathfinder Road.
The man and woman were taken into custody, Saleeby said.
The suspects’ names were not available, as they suffered apparently minor injuries in the crash and were taken to a hospital for treatment prior to booking.

UPDATED: Five hurt when car plows through San Dimas Party City store on Halloween

SAN DIMAS >> Five people were hurt, including four children, after a car plowed into a Party City store in San Dimas crowded with last-minute shoppers on Halloween, officials said.
The 12:07 p.m. crash at Party City, 852 W. Arrow Highway, left a car completely inside the store, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo said.
Five people inside the store suffered injuries when the Mercedes-Benz sedan smashed through the front plate-glass window, fire Capt. Tim Wiehe said.
Paramedics took a teenage girl to a hospital with apparent moderate injuries, fire Capt. Tim Wiehe said.
A woman and baby boy were taken to a hospital by ambulance with injuries also described as moderate, he said.
Two boys suffered minor injuries and did not need to be taken to the hospital, Wiehe said.
Fortunately, the car penetrated the store on the side opposite of the store’s crowded Halloween section, Wiehe said.
The crash mainly damaged the glass storefront and did not affect the building’s structural integrity, the captain said.
Officials cordoned off the damaged section of the store so the business could reopen for the remainder of the business day.
The 35-year-old woman driving the Mercedes-Benz was unhurt, sheriff’s and fire officials said.
Deputies from the sheriff’s San Dimas Station are investigating the cause of the crash, Lt. Tonya Edwards said.
No arrests or citations were made at the scene, she said. There were no overt signs of a crime, and the crash was being investigated as an accident.

Deputies to wait tables for charity in San Dimas

SAN DIMAS >> Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and Red Robin are teaming up to raise money for the Special Olympics Thursday in San Dimas.
Deputies will act as servers from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the restaurant for the “Tip-A-Cop” event, 565 West Arrow Highway, organizers said.
All of the tips collected by the deputies will benefit the Special Olympics.

Deputies, church volunteers renovate seniors’ homes throughout San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles County

LA PUENTE >> Dozens of volunteers teamed with sheriff’s deputies, church members, elected officials and local businesses Saturday to perform much-needed home repairs at the homes of elderly San Gabriel Valley resident and local park facilities as part of a county-wide effort dubbed “Operation Love Loud.”
The massive effort, lead by Faith Community Church in West Covina Pastor Kelly DuPee and Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. John Stanley, began Saturday and continues throughout the county through the end of October, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Pete Cacheiro, who effectively serves as La Puente’s police chief. A total of 140 projects are planned in 18 cities, from Sylmar to Long Beach.
“The mission of our deputies, volunteers and city staff will be to re-beautify the residences for the elderly home owners,” he said.
1018_NWS_SGT-L-LOVELOUD2More than 40 eager volunteers descended on two homes and a park building in La Puente, as well as seven schools, two parks and a house in West Covina and a park in San Dimas, Cacheiro said.
State Sen. Ed Hernandez, D-West Covina, helped at the event at the invitation of his daughter, La Puente Councilwoman Valerie Munoz.
“It was great. I’m very pleased to see that not only the church and the (sheriff’s) department, but more importantly, the cities and local government, work together to help people in need,” the senator said.
He described a touching experience at the home of a senior citizen on Greenberry Drive in La Puente, where volunteers conducted extensive work, including painting her home’s exterior and taming overgrown landscaping.
“She was literally in tears, just ecstatic, Hernandez said.
The woman’s husband died last year. “She was going through a really tough time, the house was in disarray,” he said.
And it was only after deputies offered the woman help that they learned the woman herself was a sheriff’s department volunteer, who had recently been named a Volunteer of the Year, Hernandez said. “It was just such a great coincidence.”
And the community spirit proved contagious.
At the home of an elderly couple on Cadwell Street, curious neighbors came out to see what patrol cars were in the neighborhood, Cacheiro said.
“When they found out what we were doing for this homeowner, they got involved and started helping,” he said.
Officials including La Puente City Manager David Carmany also pitched in, Cacheiro said.
The residents benefitting from the campaign were selected by deputies, who identified homeowners in need of a helping hand during their routine patrols, he said.
Home Depot of Industry and Valley Vista Services provided supplies, and the La Puente donated food and drinks for the volunteers.

Three robbed at gunpoint along roadside in forest north of Glendora

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST >> A man and woman robbed three people at gunpoint at a turnout along San Gabriel Road in the forest north of Glendora early Friday, officials said.
A man and woman from La Puente and a West Covina man were outside their about 12:10 a.m. at a turnout near mile marker 23.58, about two miles south of East Fork Road, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.
The two robbers, a man and woman, approached in a White Acura sedan, according to Lt. Andy Berg.
“The male suspect produced a pistol and demanded the victim’s property,” Berg said in a written statement. “One of the male victims surrendered $25 and his car keys. The second male victim gave the suspect $22.”
“During this time, the female suspect entered the car of the female victim and stole a purse containing a cell phone,” Berg added.
The victims, who were between 25 and 28 years old, made their way down the mountain and called for help, he said. They were unhurt.
Deputies described the male robber as a Latino man between 18 and 20, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 150 pounds, with a shaved head. His female accomplice was Latina, 18-20, 5 feet 6 inches tall and about 120 pounds, with dark hair.

San Dimas smoke shop robbed; suspect may also be responsible for Covina gas station robbery

SAN DIMAS >> A man used a knife to rob a San Dimas tobacco shop Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The crime was reported shortly after 4 p.m. at the Club Smoke Shop, 633 W. Arrow Highway, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Tonya Edwards said.
The robber brandished a knife and demanded money from a clerk before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash, the lieutenant said.
He was described asa Latino man of about 25 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 170 pounds, wearing a black baseball cap, a black T-shirt and black-and-white plaid shorts.
Based on similar suspect descriptions and tactics, detectives were looking into the possibility the smoke shop robbery was carried out by the same man who robbed a Shell gas station Friday about two miles to the west at Arrow Highway and Sunflower Avenue in an unincorporated county area near Covina, Edwards said.

Officials: Covina man arrested in San Dimas with meth, loaded handgun

SAN DIMAS >> A report of a “suspicious person” in a residential San Dimas neighborhood Friday led deputies to arrest an alleged methamphetamine dealer with a loaded handgun, officials said.
Paul Matthew Moreno, 43, of Covina was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth for sales and possession of a loaded, concealed handgun in public, according 1010_NWS_SGT-L-SDARRESTto Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials and booking records.
A witness called police about 10:35 a.m. to report a “suspicious person in a vehicle” in the 1300 block of Calle Caballero, sheriff’s Lt. Tonya Edwards said.
Deputies confronted the man — later identified as Moreno — and found him in possession of a loaded revolver, as well as a “large quantity” of meth separated into multiple baggies, Edwards said. He was arrested without a struggle. The exact amount of drugs recovered was not available Friday afternoon.
Moreno was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending his arraignment hearing, scheduled Wednesday in Pomona Superior Court.

Men robbed of cell phone at gunpoint in San Dimas

SAN DIMAS >> A gunman with facial tattoos and an accomplice robbed two other men of a cell phone at gunpoint in a residential San Dimas neighborhood Friday afternoon, officials said.
The crime was reported just before 1 p.m. at the garage of a home in the 400 block of North Cataract Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Jorge Chavez said.
Two men in their late-teen to early-20s told deputies they were approached by two men, he said. One of the men brandished a handgun and demanded the victims turn over their cell phones.
After obtaining one phone, the robbers were last seen fleeing the area in a silver Toyota Camry, the sergeant said. No injuries were reported.
The gunman was described as a Latino man between 35 and 40 years old, with tattoos on his face and both arms. His accomplice was described as a Latino man between 25 and 30.
