Teen arrested, armed man sought following San Gabriel liquor robbery

SAN GABRIEL >> Police arrested a teen who stole alcohol from a San Gabriel supermarket and fought with security guards who confronted him on Friday, but a man who pulled a gun on the security guards in an attempt to help the teen escape remained at large, authorities said.
The series of events began about 12:10 p.m. when a suspect, ultimately found to be a 16-year-old boy, snatched some alcoholic beverages from the Hawaii Supermarket, 120 E. Valley Blvd., San Gabriel police Sgt. Rebecca Gomez said.
Two loss prevention officers chased after the teen as he fled south down Del Mar Avenue, she said. They caught up with him in the 200 block of West Norwood Place, and they began to struggle, according to the sergeant.
A man emerged from the residential neighborhood, pointed a silver-colored handgun at the security guards and ordered them to let the young thief go, Gomez said.
Both the man and teen ran off, and officers set up a search perimeter with help from neighboring police departments.
Officers found the teen hiding behind a trash can with help from a police dog within an hour, Gomez said. He suffered minor bite injuries while being taken into custody. The allegedly stolen booze was recovered in the area.
The gunman was not found. He was described as a white or Latino man in his late-20s, of thin build, wearing a black shirt and red-and-black pants.
Gomez said the teen was examined at a hospital and taken to juvenile hall on suspicion of robbery.

Man sentenced for double-stabbing at San Gabriel boarding house

SAN GABRIEL >> A man has begun serving a 9-year prison sentence for stabbing the managers of a San Gabriel boarding house where he was staying in 2016, officials said.
Qianyi Wang, 35, pleaded “no contest” on Monday to charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the Alhambra branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Ricardo Santiago said.
He was immediately sentenced to nine years in state prison for the Aug. 11, 2016, attack, which took place at an unpermitted boarding house in the 1900 block of South Twin Avenue, Santiago said.
Wang slashed the neck of a 56-year-old woman, seriously injuring her and resulting in the attempted murder charge, San Gabriel police Lt. Brian Kott said shortly after Wang’s arrest. Wang and also slashed the woman’s 53-year-old boyfriend when he came to her defense, tackling Wang and wrestling the large kitchen knife from his grasp with help from some of the other nine residents of the boarding home.
Wang had just moved in to the home a day or two before the crime, Kott said.
The unprovoked attack followed complaints from roommates that Wang was making excessive noise, but was non preceded by any type of heated argument or fight, the lieutenant said.
The two victims were serving as managers of the boarding home, Kott said.
Wang was ordered back to court May 2 for a restitution hearing, Santiago said.

Man and woman found shot at Highland casino identified as San Gabriel residents; deaths ruled suicides

HIGHLAND >> Authorities have identified a man and woman from San Gabriel who were found shot to death inside a car at San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino last week and determined both deaths were suicides, sheriff’s officials said Thursday.
The bodies of Thanh Lang, 50, and Nhu Ly, 50, were discovered inside a car parked in a parking garage of the casino, 777 San Manuel Blvd., San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s officials said in a written statement.
The man and woman, whose relationship was not clear Thursday, were pronounced dead after deputies responded to a report of two people found “unresponsive” inside a vehicle, according to the statement. “Upon arrival, deputies located an adult male and an adult female with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced deceased.”
Investigators have not yet been able to find next-of-kin for Lang an Ly and are hoping the public may be able to help locate their family, the statement said.
No further details were released.

Man jailed for attempted forgery at San Gabriel bank

SAN GABRIEL >> Police arrested a man Sunday as he tried to cash a fraudulent check for thousands of dollars at a an Gabriel bank, officials said.
Wen Cong Huang, 39, who has addresses listed in San Gabriel and Alhambra, was booked on suspicion of forgery, possession of “precursors to identity theft” and providing false information to police following his arrest about 12:40 p.m. at the East West Bank branch inside of the 99 Ranch Market, 140 West Valley Blvd., San Gabriel police Sgt. Rebecca Gomez said.
Bank officials notified police that Huang was trying to cash a fictitious check, she said. Officers arrived at the bank branch and took Huang into custody before he left.
In addition to the fraudulent check, Huang was in possession of identifying documents for several other people, Gomez said.
He has a previous conviction in March of 2016 for forgery, for which he was placed on three years of formal probation, Los Angeles County Superior Court records show. In that case, which was first filed in 2013, eight additional charges, including burglary, possession of ID theft documents and false impersonation, were dismissed.
Four days later, Huang was convicted of receiving stolen property and being under the influence of a controlled substance, records show. He was sentenced to one day in county jail and three years of summary probation.
Huang was being held without bail pending his initial court appearance, according to Los Angeles County booking records.

Pasadena man guilty of fatally shooting sister, wounding her son in San Gabriel

SAN GABRIEL >> A jury convicted a Pasadena man of murder and other charges on Thursday for fatally shooting his own sister, and attempting to shoot her 13-year-old son, at their San Gabriel home after the sister criticized him for physically abusing his then-girlfriend, officials said.
A jury in Alhambra convicted Johnny Goins, 32, of first-degree murder, attempted murder and two counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling for the March 5, 2015, attack at the victims’ apartment in the 5100 block of Rosemead Boulevard, in an unincorporated county area just east of San Gabriel, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said in a written statement. The jury also found true the special allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm during the crime.
Tanaya Goins, 32, died after Goins arrived at her apartment about 6:40 a.m. and opened fire, Lt. Dave Dolson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said shortly after the slaying.
Tanaya Goins was shot in the head and torso, officials said. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Her 13-year-son, the shooter’s nephew, was wounded in the arm.
Goins carried out the shooting because he was enraged by a text message conversation his sister had with his then-girlfriend.
“According to evidence presented at trial, Johnny Goins’ girlfriend alerted Tanaya Goins that the defendant had tried to suffocate her,” according to Ardalani. “In a series of text messages, the girlfriend also stated that the defendant told her he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder because he experienced violence as a child.
“Tanaya Goins told the girlfriend that her brother did not suffer child abuse and that he should not be assaulting women,” Ardalani said.
This prompted Johnny Goins to arm himself with a revolver and head to her apartment, where he fired a volley of shots through the front door and window.
Detectives identified Johnny Goins as the suspect and arrested him in Moreno Valley later the same day.
Ardalani said Goins faces up to 77 years to life in state prison when he returns to court for sentencing on April 6.

Nearly 7,000 marijuana plants seized from San Gabriel commercial building, 2 suspects jailed

SAN GABRIEL >> Police uprooted nearly 7,000 marijuana plants and arrested two men on Wednesday after raiding two separate indoor marijuana grow operations inside the same massive commercial building, officials said.
Investigators showed up with a search warrant about 7 a.m. at the 42,000-square-foot building at 100 S. South Gabriel Blvd., according to San Gabriel police Lt. Brian Kott. The building was formerly used as a major auto dealership.
Officers first discovered an illicit pot farm of about 4,200 plants inside a portion of the property formerly used for auto repairs when the structure was an auto dealership, the lieutenant said in a written statement. The operation was complete with artificial lighting, as well as “sophisticated hydroponic and ventilation systems.”
Phong Day Ung, 36, of Rosemead was found working at the grow operation and arrested on suspicion of cultivating marijuana, Kott said.
“As detectives continued their search of the property, another separate marijuana grow was found hidden inside a building directly under the main office at the northwest portion of the premises,” Kott said.
There were no visible entry points into the grow operation, save for a secret interior passageway to the upstairs office, police said. More than 2.600 pot plants were found growing inside several fabricated rooms inside the second grow site, where 34-year-old Yuntong Zheng of Monterey Park was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana as he returned to the scene as the investigation continued, Kott said.
It was not clear Wednesday whether the two marijuana grows were linked, or merely a coincidence.
Wednesday’s bust was the result of a two-week-long investigation spawned by an anonymous tip from a citizen, Kott said.

San Gabriel man accused of long-term sexual abuse of child

SAN GABRIEL >> Police arrested a 37-year-old San Gabriel man on Tuesday after learning of allegations that he had sexually abused a young female relative over the past five years, officials said.
Jcelso Celestino Ombao was booked on suspicion of continuous sexual abuse of a child, as well as other sex-crime related felonies, according to San Gabriel police Lt. Brian Kott.
Police launched their investigation just before 2 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report from staff at Temple City High School that a 15-year-old female student had been the victim sexual abuse, the lieutenant said.
“During the initial investigation, the victim divulged to officers that she had been sexually abused by an adult male family relative on a frequent and repeated basis within the family home for approximately the past give years,” Kott said in a written statement.
The alleged crimes took place at several home throughout the region, where the family had lived, as well as in San Gabriel in recent months.
Police arrested Ombao and obtained a warrant to search the family home, Jott said. “Evidence was collected that corroborated the victim’s account.”

UPDATE: Man killed in South San Gabriel shooting

SOUTH SAN GABRIEL >> Gunfire in a residential neighborhood in South San Gabriel left one man dead Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
The shooting was reported about 3:15 p.m. in the 7900 block of Hill Drive, in the unincorporated county area, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Frank Ruiz said.
Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, according to Deputy Kimberly Alexander of the sheriff’s Information Bureau.
Three people were seen running from the scene of the shooting, Ruiz said. It was not immediately clear whether they were the attackers, or merely other people fleeing the gunfire.
No further details were available as the investigation remained in its early stages.

Man sentenced for fatal stabbing of San Gabriel man in South Whittier

SOUTH WHITTIER >> A Pico Rivera man received a seven-year prison sentence for fatally stabbing hid ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend during a fight in South Whittier in 2015.
George Delgado, 54, pleaded “no contest” to a charge of voluntary manslaughter on Sept. 14 in for the Sept. 26, 2015, stabbing death of 42-year-old Tyler Duran of San Gabriel, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said.
The plea was the result of a negotiated plea arrangement, she said. Delgado was initially charged with murder, which carries a minimum sentence of 15 years to life in prison. He pleaded not guilty to the murder charge in October of 2015.
Friday’s sentence was handed down in the Norwalk branch of Los Angeles Court by Judge Joseph R. Porris.
Duran was at his girlfriend’s home in the 13500 block of Trumball Street, in the unincorporated county area of South Whittier, prior to the stabbing, prosectors said in a written statement.
Delgado, the woman’s ex-boyfriend, showed up and confronted the couple, officials said. Duran left, but returned a short time later.
“When Duran came back to the home, he was allegedly faced by Delgado again and the two men got into a fight,” according to the statement. “During the physical struggle, Delgado reportedly stabbed Duran.”
Duran soon succumbed to his wounds at a hospital, officials said.
Delgado fled and was sought as a fugitive for 11 days before he was ultimately captured in Pico Rivera.

San Gabriel robbery suspects arrested following pursuit

SAN GABRIEL >> Two men accused of robbing a San Gabriel cell phone store on Wednesday afternoon led police on a high-speed chase before being cornered and apprehended in Los Angeles, authorities said.
An officer first tried to stop the suspects’ car about 5:51 p.m. for a routine traffic violation in the area of San Gabriel Boulevard, south of Valley Boulevard, San Gabriel Police Lt. Tony Hernandez said.
The driver failed to pull over, instead starting a chase during which he drove recklessly and at high speed down the westbound 10 Freeway, he said.
As the pursuit was ongoing, police received information that the car was believed to have been involved in a robbery that occurred about 5:45 p.m. at a cell phone store in the 800 block of Valley Boulevard, according to the lieutenant.
Two men with at least one gun had entered the store and fled with about 20 phones, he said. It was not immediately clear if cash was also taken.
Officers continued chasing the suspects as they exited the freeway at Mission Road in Los Angeles and crashed into another motorist, Hernandez said. The two suspects abandoned the car and continued to flee on foot. The other driver involved in the crash was unhurt.
The fleeing suspects ran directly into a commercial property enclosed by a 6-foot-tall, razor-wire-topped fence, he said. They surrendered once they realized they were trapped.
The suspects identities were not immediately available.
Police were re-tracing the path of the pursuit late Wednesday in search of items possible tossed from the suspects during the chase, he added.
