sergiocorona.jpgPolice arrested Baldwin Park School Board member Sergio Corona this morning on suspicion of driving under the influence and felony vandalism. He was apparently breaking windows at a home in the 13900 block of Standstone Street in Baldwin Park.

Covina OIS remains hot on Topix board

The death of Glenn Patrick Rose following a pursuit that ended in a hail of gunfire in a Covina alley is generating a lot of comment from friends and family in a Topix discussion of Amanda Baumfeld's story.

Here's a sample comment from someone identified as JoJo of Covina:

Those of us that knew Patrick know what cause's this type of behavior. Those of you that were close to him know exactly what I'm saying.

Several other commenters have taken up a defense of Rose on the site.

Meanwhile, Rose's girlfriend Sarah Rebecca Morales, 24, of Pomona was arraigned Thursday on three counts of assault on a police officer or firefighter and two counts of taking or driving a vehicle without the owner's consent.

She's being held in lieu of $60,000 bail at the same Lynwood facility that housed Paris Hilton last summer, according to the sheriff's inmate locator.

48 hours in the SGV

El Monte police found themselves in the middle of a bona-fide crime wave earlier this week. Bethania Palma pieced it all together for an article that ran in today's Tribune. Crime Scene gotta give a shout out to Detective Ralph Batres, who rolled to all the incidents described below and found time to answer his telephone in the process.
Here's an excerpt from Bethania's report:
EL MONTE - A stabbing, a shooting, three search warrants leading to a major pot bust and a bomb scare involving 30 pounds of TNT.
It's a roll call of major crime that sounds like it could fit neatly into a busy month for any police department.
But in El Monte, those calls made up part of a frantic 48 hours that saw police handle two homicides - making arrests in both cases; bust up a $2 million pot operation 15 miles away in Rowland Heights; and swiftly clear a neighborhood endangered by 30 pounds of TNT.
"We have a very active city," said police Chief Ken Weldon. "It's a challenge to stay on top of it."

From the mail bag

Got this note via email. We do have some updated information on Friday's incident, but as for Saturday, we're still checking. Here's the note:

Hi Frank, any news on the two shootings in Baldwin Park last Thursday and Friday? (March 20th and 21st). Both happened on Barnes ave. I believe the Friday evening shooting was an attempted robbery . Two teens were injured. I been living here all my life and this is the worst gang activity I have ever heard of.

Killing in Bassett

This from reporter Brian Day, who worked on Super Bowl Sunday:

BASSETT - A man was shot and killed in a residential neighborhood Sunday, officials said.

The incident was reported about 8:40 a.m. in the 13800 block of Proctor Avenue, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Luis Castro.

The man was described as a Latino in his mid-30s, and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

The man was found inside a trailer behind a home, officials added.

Detectives from the sheriff's homicide bureau are handling the investigation.

No further details were available.

Not much else was known. We'll keep an eye on it.

First photos from crime scene

RHAttemptMSuicide.JPGTania Chatila was the first reporter on scene this morning. Here are some photos she shot from uphill. She said the scene reminded her very much of the scene outside a Diamond Bar home in December where a man was killed in what appeared to be a home invasion robbery.

Suspect wanted for church parking lot burglary

CovinaSuspect.JPGCovina police are seeking the public's help in finding this suspect (black shirt) alleged to have stolen a credit card out of a car in the Sacred Heart church parking lot on Sunday. (Screenshot from video).

The surveillance video from Target captured very clear shots of the suspect and his car, a black foreign compact (probably a Honda).

Morning roundup top ten

So I'm making cop calls this a.m. and there's some interesting stuff out there, but nothing earth shattering. It seemed like just typical stuff. Countfeiter in Glendora, guy dies from injuries suffered last week, takeover robbery in West Covina.
Anyway, cops have this interesting way of apologizing for slow days. The range of apologies fascinates me.
Here's a top ten list of sorts: (hats off to AP and TR)

Is this newsworthy? I think so

Listening to the scanner this a.m there appeared to be a proliferation of burglary calls in Diamond Bar. So, I called the local sheriff's station asking about them. I was able to put together a short story about five possible burglaries. No clue as yet if they are related.
What was interesting about the whole process through was a sheriff's sergeant asking me why this story was newsworthy. Isn't it? Don't you care if businesses along a main street are getting ripped off over the weekend? Won't the business owners and their friends be talking about this today and tomorrow?
More importantly, there may be a sophisticated group of theives roaming the area, perhaps getting the information out will prompt law enforcement agencies to compare notes and catch the guys.
