The accident on Glendora Mountain Road Monday claimed the life of an 18-year-old who was apparently not wearing a safety belt, according to early reports. This from reporter Amanda Baumfeld, who is working the story this morning:
Mary E. Lange, 18, has died after a car she was a passenger in went over an embankment on Glendora Mountain Road Monday around 6 p.m., according to Officer Elizabeth Van Valkenburgh of the California Highway Patrol.
It is likely that Lang was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, Van Valkenburgh added.
Lange was riding in a Toyota Tercel apparently driven by *Stephanie Bergner, 18, * officials said. The driver lost control and the car careened over an embankment at mile marker 5*, authorities said. Berger and a third girl, identified as Esther Cota, were severely injured.
Here's the AP story. I'll update with a map and photos later.
*The girls apparently lived in the David and Margaret Youth and Family Services home in La Verne.
*We've found MySpace pages apparently associated with the girls.
Here's a MySpace apparently belonging to Mary.
This may be the MySpace for Stephanie.
**CHP sources tell us that the girls may have been in the mountains to go fishing. There is no evidence that alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash, officials said.
.
"A collision with a couple of deaths," according to Lt. John Dewar of the Pasadena Police Department.
Apparently the accident occurred at the intersection of Lincoln and Washington about 9:45 p.m.
No further details were immediately available.
The collision followed reports of a "vehicle over the side" on Glendora Mountain Road. That incident apparently also ended with at least one fatality, officials said.
That's what reporter Dan Abendschein thought when he first arrived on the scene and *saw several large trucks in Azusa and Glendora were among 46 and 48 vehicles that* had their windows blown out overnight.
"ELF," asked reporer Bethania Palma.
"It was just a crackpot theory," Dan replied.
After he saw a few compacts with the same sort of damage Dan admitted he was bummed out that his "theory" didn't pan out.
Was it teenagers?
"Yeah, I think so," said Dan.
Photographer Keith Durflinger had some interesting moments when he was approached by a woman whose car was damaged.
"I got a picture of a lady and her child. And he's looking at the window that got blown out. She said they saw it on TV and said to herself, 'Hey, is thats our car? Yeah that's our car!'"
Keith later found out that Sarah Barroga haven't been driving the unidentified vehicle. They were going to be selling it...
BTW, Dan shot this photo. He thinks it was on Mauna Loa in Glendora
This is a brief that will run in tomorrow's paper, and the story is apparently a little stale. But I like it because of several elements. I'm sure you all can guess what elements. Here's the jist of the piece:
A 15-year-old local boy was arrested on suspicion of eight area burglaries after his parents noticed incriminating statements on his MySpace page, said Glendora police Detective Marty Barrett.
After viewing the MySpace entries, the boy's parents searched their son’s room and found what appeared to be stolen property. After that, they called the cops.
Four of the burglaries were to homes, and the other four were to cars, police said. In each case the boy allegedly took advantage of unlocked doors and windows to commit the crimes, Barrett said.
The burglaries took place over a three week period.
Jewelry, cash, credit card information, electronics, Playboy mags, and adult movies were among the items stolen, Barrett said. All but the cash were recovered.
The teen allegedly used stolen credit card information to purchase $600 worth of iTunes, said the detective.
Once arrested, the teen suspect was “extremely cooperative,” and pointed out all the locations he’d struck, Barrett said. Two of the victims weren’t aware their property had been stolen.
The city of Albuquerque is suing a company that hired two traveling salesmen accused of killing an elderly couple and stealing their camera.
One of the two salesmen charged in the case was identified last week as Travis Rowley, a native of Glendora, who has had some run-ins with police in Orange County.
Here's a brief that appeared in the Santa Fe New Mexican this week:
Salesmen's company sued
ALBUQUERQUE — A Nevada company that employed two traveling magazine salesmen accused of killing an elderly Albuquerque couple this month is being sued by the city of Albuquerque.
The lawsuit accuses Integrity Program of not conducting background checks on the two men or otherwise doing an adequate job of ensuring they would not be a danger to the city. The city is seeking punitive damages and a restraining order that would prevent the company from doing business in Albuquerque.
"All we have to show is that (Integrity Program) violated our ordinance," said Assistant City Attorney Greg Wheeler.
Integrity Program did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
The company employed Travis Rowley, 23, and Michael Lee, 21, to sell magazine subscriptions in the Albuquerque area. The two men are charged with murder in the Dec. 4 deaths of Tak Yi, 79, and his wife, Pung Yi, 69. The couple was found beaten to death in their home.
Rowley and Lee remain in the Metropolitan Detention Center in lieu of $2 million cash bond each.
This is a mugshot of Travis Ryan Rowley, a one-time Glendora resident charged in a brutal double homicide in Albuquerque, N.M.
Rowley and an accomplice, Michael Lee, are suspected of beating an elderly couple to death at their home in an upscale neighborhood.
The couple identified as Tak Yi and Pung Yi were fairly prominent in their community according to reporter Maggie Sheppard's stories in the Albuquerque Tribune.
A criminal complaint against Rowley was read at an arraignment Saturday in Bernallo County N.M.
The pair were selling magazines for a company called Integrity PGM. Here's what the "Ripoff Report" says about Integrity.
Travis R. Rowley, charged with two murders in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, had a criminal record in Orange County according to public documents. In June Rowley was sentenced to probation for pleading guilty to petty theft.
The probation was revoked in September, according to those same documents.
Along with Michael Lee, of Boston MA, Rowley, 23, is charged in the brutal beating deaths of Tak Yi and Pung Yi, described as prominent members of Albuquerque's Korean community.
Rowley confessed to taking part in the killing, according to a police report.
We'll post up some of these documents later. In the meantime, we'll continue to look for Rowley's connections to the SGV.
A Glendora man selling magazines door-to-door in Albuquerque, New Mexico has been arrested in connection with the murder of a prominent member of the city's Korean community.
Travis Rowley, 23, of Glendora was arrested Friday.
There are several stories on the Internet about this slaying. Including the Albuquerque Tribune's coverage.
Rowley is being held in lieu of $2 million in Bernalillo County on two counts of murder.
This comment on the Glendora brick throwing teens came in via email this a.m.
Send them all to Baghdad and bring home a equal number of real men..... Marines.
