A serial bandit who clearly needs a name

A guy in a Yankees cap is making the rounds of WaMu banks in the SGV terrorizing customers and getting away with some serious cash. Funny thing, not only does he like WaMu, but he has a favorite branch in Covina, at least that’s how it looks. Here’s a couple of surveillance photos, a list of locations and a poll. Enjoy.

Mike Alrerich of the bank terrorism blog sent this heads up:

Just Fyi the susp. that was mentioned in Wed. article hittingWamuon Colorado Bl. is good forWamuin Glendale 11-3,WamuW.Covina Twice, 10-2 & 7-21 plus others.

Checking out the FBI’s labankrobbers.org

I found this surveillance photo …it matches surveillance photos from Mike’s list of WaMu stick-ups. Here’s the photo:

211 takeover suspects sought

This from the Bank Terrorism blog:

At 9:38 AM on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, three black males entered the Citibank Mall of Orange Branch in Orange, CA with drawn handguns and executed a takeover robbery. The suspects ordered customers and personnel to the floor, stole a large sum of cash from a customer who was at the bank to open an account, took cash from two tellers and then forced bank personnel into the bank’s vault. A Personal Banker was accosted by one suspect who ripped the employee’s wrist watch from his arm. No other injuries were sustained. It is believed that there was a fourth individual involved in this robbery who stood by in what is believed to be a light colored Toyota Corolla. There is no known description of this drive.

The suspects are described as two thin black males wearing hooded sweatshirts and another black male wearing a “bucket hat” (see photo on left) who was considered as being more muscular. All had handguns, but the guns were not readily identifiable. The robbery lasted approximately four minutes. There were no injuries to any of Citibank’s customers or personnel. The bank did not reopen for business.

GUILTY !

A Las Vegas jury found OJ Simpson guilty in a gunpoint robbery at the Palace Station Casino last year. Interestingly enough, some of the cast of weirdos that he robbed believe their hero was railroaded. Here’s the AP story (Note the interesting twist):

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jurors in the O.J. Simpson trial reached a verdict Friday after working into the night, deliberating the fate of the former football star and a co-defendant accused of robbing two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a casino hotel room.
“We have a verdict,” said Michael Sommermeyer, spokesman for the Clark County District Court. He said it would be read after all the defendants, lawyers and prosecutors arrived at the court.
The jury reached a decision after deliberating for more than 13 hours.
Simpson, 61, and a golfing buddy, Clarence “C.J.” Stewart, 54, each face five years to life in prison if convicted of kidnapping, or mandatory prison time if convicted of armed robbery. They’ve pleaded not guilty to 12 charges, including conspiracy, coercion and assault with a deadly weapon.
Deliberations began 13 years to the day after Simpson was acquitted of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, in Los Angeles.

Former Pasadena cop suspected “Polite Bandit”

From reporter Ruby Gonzales on the 211 beat in Whittier:

14264-policebandit-thumb-300x199.jpg

LA HABRA – A man arrested for allegedly robbing a La Habra bank last week is a former Pasadena police officer.

The FBI said it is also investigating if the man, 44-year-old Vincent Cantu of Whittier, could be the apologetic “Polite Bandit” who hit three local banks in 2006.

“There are similarities,” said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller. She said the “Polite Bandit” robbed Banco Popular branches and the La Habra robbery was at a Banco Popular.

The bandit was seen with a gun during the 2006 heists and told victims he was sorry.

Rosemead robbery nets diamonds

We heard this go down over the scanner Tuesday afternoon. It’s an interesting story especially when paired with the tale of a homicide in Century City.

Here’s some of the Rosemead tale:

ROSEMEAD – A man was stabbed and robbed of a briefcase full of diamond engagement rings Tuesday, authorities said.

The crime was reported about 5:20 p.m. in the 3600 block of Rosemead Boulevard, Los Angles County sheriff’s Lt. Mike O’Shea said.

A man was approached by three Latino men wearing bandanas over their faces and dark hooded sweat shirts, O’Shea said.

One of the suspects pulled a knife and stabbed the victim in his left arm and the robbers grabbed his briefcase, which was filled with diamond engagement rings, O’Shea said.

The victim is believed to be either a jewelry dealer or maker who stopped for dinner on his way to meet clients, he added.

Then there’s this story from Century City:

Dust Mask Bandit

11895-dust_mask_bandit_01-thumb-300x159.jpg

Not a lot’s been written about this guy. But he’s known as the “Dust Mask Bandit” and is apparently responsible for robberies in Alhambra, Encino and Orange.

The Orange County Register has a nice interactive Google map of bank robberies in their coverage area with some details. The Dust Mask Bandit is mentioned in the story.
