Man beaten with blunt object in road rage attack outside La Canada Flintridge fire station

LA CANADA >> In a violent incident of road rage, a group of three people followed a man from a Glendale gas station to La Canada Flintridge, where one of them beat the victim with a baseball bat or other blunt object as he tried to seek help at a Foothill Boulevard fire station late Thursday, officials said.
The attack unfolded shortly after 7 p.m. outside Los Angeles County Fire Station 19, 1729 Foothill Blvd., Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Randy Tuinstra said.
The attackers — described only as two men and a woman in a silver or gray Lexus sedan — became enraged over some type of traffic dispute at or near a gas station in Glendale, the lieutenant said.
They then began following the victim, who ultimately drove to the fire station to seek help.
“As he exited his vehicle and went knocking for help at fire station, a suspect jumped out of car and battered him with a blunt object,” Tuinstra said. The victim was struck in his arm and head. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The attackers and their car were not found, Tuinstra said.

Police: Man bites off piece of neighbor’s face in Pico Rivera

PICO RIVERA >> A Pico Rivera man bit a piece of another man’s face off and tried to throw another off of a second-floor balcony during a dispute between neighbors at an apartment complex on Friday, officials said.
Jose Luis Pena, 38, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, legally defines as depriving another person of a part of their body, disfiguring a body part or rendering it useless, or cutting or disabling of the tongue, eye, nose, ear or lip, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials and booking records.
The violence unfolded about noon at an apartment building in the 7400 block of Rosemead Boulevard, sheriff’s Lt. Sergio Escobedo said.
Deputies responded to a report of a fight among neighbors when they learned Pena had attacked on neighbor by trying unsuccessfully to throw him over the railing of a second-story balcony.
Pena then turned his attention on another neighbor. “He attacked (the second neighbor) and bit of a piece of his cheek,” the lieutenant said.
Deputies took Pena into custody without a struggle.
Both victims were described as man in their 20s, Escobedo said. The man whose cheek was bitten was taken to a hospital for treatment,
It was unclear how the dispute began.
According to county booking records, Pena was being held in lieu of $130,000 bail pending his initial court appearance.

Wife of TV weatherman accused of attack on adult daughter in La Canada Flintridge

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE >> The wife of KABC-TV chief meteorologist Dallas Raines pleaded not guilty Wednesday to allegations she beat and tried to strangle her 25-year-old daughter last month, officials said.
Danielle Raines, 58, of Pasadena is charged with a single felony count of assault by means likely to to produce great bodily injury, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Ricardo Santiago.
The alleged assault took place on Aug. 31 in La Canada Flintridge, officials said.
Danielle Raines had been drinking wine with her 25-year-old daughter at a country club prior to the incident, Santiago said in a written statement.
“(Raines) she became belligerent and struck and pushed her daughter as she prepared to drive her mother home,” according to the statement.
The alleged assault continued as the daughter drove, prompting her to pull over, Santiago said.
“Once on the side of the road, Raines allegedly continued beating the victim and attempted to strangle her before she managed to escape,” the statement said.
If convicted as charged, Raines faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison.
The motive in the alleged assault was unclear.
Deputy District Attorney Jodi Taksar, who is prosecuting the case, deferred comment to the district attorney’s media relations office.
Raines remains free pending the legal process on $35,000 bail, which she posted the day of her arrest, records show.
Bail was set at $30,000. If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of four years in state prison.

Elderly good Samaritan helps deputy wrestle violent suspect into custody in Duarte

DUARTE >> An 81-year-old good Samaritan helped a deputy wrestle a combative wanted felon into custody in Duarte earlier this week, officials said.
Officials from the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Temple Station thanked the citizen, a local man who wished to remain anonymous, for his help in Tuesday’s arrest in a written statement.
Michael Rodriguez, 24, was booked on suspicion of battery on a deputy, vandalism and resisting arrest, and was also being held on a pre-existing warrant, Sgt. Jose Carbajal said. An additional charge of escape may also be sought by prosecutors.
Deputy Joshua Lambert stopped Rodriguez about 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday after spotting him riding a bike with an open container of alcohol at Huntington Drive and Highland Avenue, Sgt. Jose Carbajal said.
The deputy then placed Rodriguez, un-handcuffed, in the back seat of his patrol car, officials said.
“A warrant check revealed the suspect had a no-bail felony warrant for a weapons violation,” according to the statement. “When the suspect realized he was being arrested, he became enraged, kicked out the rear passenger side window and climbed out of the patrol vehicle.”
The deputy began fighting with the suspect in an attempt to prevent is escape. The 81-year-old good Samaritan was driving by when he saw the struggle, stopped his car and got out to help.
“The citizen grabbed the suspect around the neck and told him, ‘Relax and let him handcuff you. Just relax,’” according to the statement. “The suspect continued to struggle. The three of them fell to the ground where the deputy and the citizen held the suspect in place until assisting deputies arrived a short time later.”
Fellow deputies then arrived and helped take the suspect into custody. The deputy suffered only bumps and bruises, Carbajal said. The good Samaritan was unhurt.
In addition to being thanked by the station as a whole, Deputy Lambert personally expressed hi gratitude to the good Samaritan.
“If it hadn’t been for (the citizen) stopping to help me, it could have got real ugly. That guy did not want to go to jail,” Lambert said.

Man accused of holding woman captive, assaulting her in Pasadena arrested at Nevada border

PASADENA >> Officials Saturday arrested a Pasadena man at the Nevada border who they had been seeking for holding his ex-girlfriend captive for nearly two days while physically and sexually assaulting her, as well as trying to extort her for money, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol officers found and captured Jorge Arturo Ruiz, 42, of Pasadena, about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, “just prior to crossing the state line into Nevada on the Interstate 15 Highway,” Pasadena police officials said in a written statement.
Also arrested was 36-year-old Marta Valladares of Los Angeles, who was accompanying Ruiz at the time of his arret, and 30-year-old Christine Yerikian of Los Angeles, who was arrested Friday in Los Angeles County, according to police and Los Angeles County booking records.
The women are accused of aiding and abetting Ruiz, as well as destruction of evidence and helping Ruiz avoid arrest.
Police first learned of the alleged crimes just after midnight Friday.
“A resident of the 100 block of North Raymond Avenue reported to the Pasadena Police Department that a female had run out of an apartment, where she states she had been held against her will and physically and sexually assaulted,” according to the statement.
The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of “severe contusions” to her head, face and body, police said. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Investigators determined Ruiz had held the woman captive for one-and-a-half to two days while carrying out the assaults and trying to extort money from her, Sgt. Schuyler Sandeen said. The sergeant declined to discuss details of alleged the extortion plot.
The suspect — later identified as Ruiz — fled from the area on foot before police arrived. Pasadena police partnered with the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force in search of Ruiz.
CHP officers spotted Ruiz’s “wanted” vehicle about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, just before it crossed into Nevada, officials said.
They took Ruiz and Valladares into custody without a struggle, Sandeen said. Valladares’ two children, ages 3 and 7, were also in the vehicle and were turned over to the custody of the County of Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services, Sandeen said.
All three suspects were taken back to Pasadena to be booked into jail.
Ruiz, who is accused of crimes including confining a person for the purpose of extortion, physical assault and sexual assault, was being held in lieu of $1.05 million bail pending his initial court appearance, officials said.
Valladares was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, while Yerikian was released from jail Saturday pending her court appearance after posting $100,000 bail.

Elderly woman attacked by intruder inside Norwalk home

NORWALK >> A intruder or intruders attacked an elderly woman after she confronted them in the process of burglarizing her home Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The victim, an 85-year-old woman, was punched during the crime and suffered a bump to her head, but did not appear seriously injured following the 2:30 p.m. crime in the 11500 block of Mapledale Street, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s and fire officials. She was taken to a hospital for examination and treatment.
Someone had broken into the woman’s home, likely believing it to be empty, sheriff’s Lt. Eric Smitson said.
At some point, the woman came face-to-face with the burglar or burglars.
“She was punched in the face,” the lieutenant said. The intruder or intruders then fled.
The woman’s son emerged from the shower to discover his mother lying on the floor, Smitson said. He then noticed a room in the house had been ransacked.
Smitson said the elderly victim was conscious and speaking with officials while taken to a hospital.
It was unclear what, if anything, had been stolen from the home.

VIDEO: Suspect sought in bizarre liquor store rampage, attack in Santa Fe Springs

SANTA FE SPRINGS >> Police are seeking a man caught on surveillance camera trashing a Santa Fe Springs liquor store and attacking the clerk with a coffee mug earlier this week after the clerk refused to let the man use his cell phone, officials said.
The bizarre rampage, which was caught on surveillance video, took place about WDN-L-ASSAULT7:50 p.m. Monday at Bruce’s Liquors, 12623 Imperial Highway, Whittier police Officer John Scoggins said in a written statement.

The suspect walked up to the clerk, a man of about 60 years old, and asked to use his cell phone, the officer said.
“When the clerk refused, the suspect went into a rage and destroyed the cash register and several other items on the counter,” Scoggins said. “He then picked up a porcelain mug and threw it, striking the clerk in the head.”
The clerk was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries, police said. The attacker fled and remained at large Thursday.
Police described the attacker as a white or Latino man in his 20s, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray jeans and black Adidas tennis shoes.

Man accused of assaulting senior citizen, police officer in Pasadena

PASADENA >> A man assaulted a senior citizen and injured a police officer in Old Pasadena before being wrestled into custody Friday afternoon, officials said.
Marvin Vaughn, a 41-year-old homeless man, was arrested for assault and battery and felony resisting of police, Pasadena police Lt. John Luna said.
Vaughn was pushing his bicycle along the 100 block of South Fair Oaks Avenue about 4:20 p.m. when he walked into a 67-year-old Los Angeles man, the lieutenant said.
The older man confronted Vaughn about the collision, he said. Vaughn pushed the man, causing him to fall and strike the back of his head.
“Officers contacted the suspect, who was belligerent,” Luna said.
A female officer suffered a shoulder injury while wrestling the suspect into custody with other officers, he said.
Luna said the injuries to the victim, officer and suspect appeared to be minor.
