CHP to hold checkpoint tonight near Industry, West Covina

INDUSTRY >> California Highway Patrol officers will be screening drivers for sobriety during a checkpoint tonight in the unincorporated county area between Industry and West Covina, officials said.
The checkpoint is scheduled to begin about 9 p.m. and continue through Saturday morning, CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said in a written statement.
“The sobriety checkpoint is part of the CHP’s effort to curb drinking and driving,” Capt. Steve Urrea of the CHP’s Baldwin Park area office said. “Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked. If volume becomes too heavy, vehicles to be checked will be selected by a pre-set standard — such as every third or fifth vehicle — to assure objectivity.”
Funding for the checkpoint is being provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

La Habra checkpoint nets one DUI arrest


LA HABRA >> Police made one DUI arrest during a sobriety and driver license checkpoint in La Habra Friday night, officials said.
One driver is accused of driving under the influence of marijuana following the checkpoint, which was held from 10 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday along southbound Beach Boulevard, approaching La Habra Boulevard, La Habra police Lt. Clint Angle said.
A total of 599 cars passed through the checkpoint, he said. Twenty-two of them were singled out for secondary screening.
In addition to the DUI arrest, one person was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public, the lieutenant said.
Police cited five drivers for driving without licenses, and one driver for driving on a suspended license, Angle said.
The vehicles belonging to the alleged DUI driver and the driver with a suspended license were impounded, he added.

Police to hold checkpoint in El Monte this weekend


EL MONTE >> El Monte police are planning a checkpoint Saturday night, as well as extra patrols throughout Memorial Day weekend to hunt for impaired drivers, officials said.
The checkpoint will be held from 7:30 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday at Valley Boulevard and Baldwin Avenue, Sgt. Jimmie Pitts of the El Monte Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau
Extra officers will be on the lookout for DUI drivers throughout the weekend in El Monte, as well as in other area jurisdictions, including freeways, police said in a written statement.
Funding for this weekends campaign is being provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

23 arrests made during Whittier checkpoint


WHITTIER >> Police arrested one alleged drunken driver, as well a 22 others during a an overnight checkpoint in Whittier, officials said Saturday.
The checkpoint was held from 7 p.m. Friday to into the early-morning hours Saturday along Mulberry Drive, just east of Santa Fe Springs Road, Whittier police Sgt. David Elizarraras said in a written statement.
In addition to the drunken driver, police arrested and released with citations for driving without licenses or with suspended or revoked licenses, he said. Two of those people were also arrested for outstanding warrants.
Police impounded seven vehicles during the checkpoint, officials said.

Police checkpoint planned in La Verne

LA VERNE >> Police in La Verne will check motorists for sobriety and valid licenses during a checkpoint Friday, officials said.
The checkpoint will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight at an undisclosed location within the city, La Verne police Sgt. Justin Newman said in a written statement.
“Over the course of the past three years, La Verne has had 29 DUI injury collisions harming 30 of our friends and neighbors,” Newman said.
Funding for the checkpoint is being provided internally by the La Verne Police Department.

Police checkpoint planned in La Habra

LA HABRA >> Police are planning to screen drivers for sobriety and valid licenses during a checkpoint in La Habra next week, officials said.
The checkpoint will take place from 9 p.m. April 15 to 3 a.m. April 16 at an undisclosed location within the city, La Habra police officials said in a written statement.
Over the past three years alone, La Habra police have investigated 146 DUI-related crashes, which resulted in two deaths and 84 injuries, police said.
Funding for the checkpoint is being provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

No arrests made at Whittier DUI checkpoint, 17 cited

WHITTIER >> Police screened 1,394 drivers, but made no arrests during an overnight checkpoint late Friday and early Saturday, officials said.
The checkpoint was held from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. on Washington Boulevard, just west of Lambert Road, Whittier police Lt. Bryan Ellis said.
Three drivers were given sobriety tests, but none were ultimately arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving, the lieutenant said.
Officers issued 13 tickets to unlicensed drivers, and another four to people driving on suspended licenses, Ellis said.

COVINA >> Police are will screen drivers for sobriety during an overnight checkpoint in Covina Saturday night, officials said.
It will be held from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday at an undisclosed location within the city, Covina police officials said in written statement.
The checkpoint is dedicated to the memory of 22-year-old Dustin Ray Travis-Plummer, who was killed by a drunk driver on Dec. 15, 2006, on the 210 Freeway near his home in Rancho Cucamonga, police said.
Funding for the checkpoint is being provided by a grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Whittier police plan checkpoint this weekend

WHITTIER >> Police are planning a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint in Whittier this weekend.
The Whittier Police Department will be conducting the checkpoint from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 3:00 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location within the city, Whittier police officials said in a written statement.
“Over the course of the past three years, “(Whittier Police Department) officers have investigated 319 DUI collisions which have claimed four lives and resulted in another 146 injuries,” according to the statement.
Funding for the checkpoint is being provided by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

UPDATED: Suspects flee from Whittier DUI checkpoint, ditch sawed-off shotgun


WHITTIER >> Police jailed one man and sought several more late after they fled from a DUI checkpoint, ditching a sawed-off shotgun late Friday, authorities said.
The incident began about 10 p.m. when the suspects pulled through a checkpoint on Lambert Road at Scott Avenue, Whittier police Lt. Bryan Ellis said.
The 1992 Toyota 4Runner initially stopped at the checkpoint, police said. But once officers asked the car to pull over for further screening, the driver sped off, with three to four passengers in the SUV.
Police briefly chased the car north on Scott Avenue, Ellis said. A saw-off shotgun was thrown from the car.
The suspects ditched their car near Scott Avenue and Whittier Boulevard and ran, the lieutenant said.
A witness reported seeing at least one of the fleeing men run into the nearby 99 Cents Only Store, prompting officers to evacuate it and search the building. No suspects were found inside.
But police found one of the suspects hiding under a parked car in a nearby residential area and took him into custody. The other suspects eluded capture
Jessy Robledo, 18, of Whittier was booked for carrying a loaded firearm in public and resisting or obstructing police, Whittier police Lt. Aaron Ruiz said.
According to Los Angeles County booking records, Robledo was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail pending his initial court appearance.
