Authorities said they are trying to connect Phillip Garrido, accused of abducting then 11-year-old Jaycee Dugard in 1991, to two other nearby child kidnappings in the late 1980s.
The police department in Hayward, Calif., said Tuesday that Mr. Garrido is “one of the strongest” of about 13,000 leads in their search for Michaela Garecht, a 9-year-old who was abducted from the Hayward area in 1988. The police department in Dublin, Calif., said Tuesday it is also investigating whether Mr. Garrido is connected with the 1989 disappearance of Dublin resident Ilene Misheloff, then 13, from near her middle school. Both cities are situated within an hour’s drive of Antioch, Calif., where Mr. Garrido and his wife Nancy lived.
Both agencies said they acquired search warrants and on Tuesday were scouring Mr. Garrido’s property in Antioch, where Ms. Dugard was allegedly held in the backyard for 18 years. Ms. Dugard resurfaced last month and has since been reunited with her family.

Jacyee Dugard had contact with neighbor in years after kidnapping

From today’s story:

Special section devoted to Jacyee Lee Dugard case.

An Antioch resident whose backyard shares a fence with the Garrido property once spoke to a little girl through that fence, he said Friday.

She told him her name was Jaycee.
Patrick McQuaid, 27, was a child when he saw a blonde girl through the chicken wire fence that used to separate his Bown Lane backyard from the Garridos’ yard. He said he believes it was around the summer of 1991, not long after Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped from a South Lake Tahoe bus stop.
“I thought she was pretty,” McQuaid said.
After he learned Jaycee’s name, McQuaid, who had never seen any children through the fence before, asked whether she lived there or was just visiting. He said she told him she was living there, but before he could ask more questions Phillip Garrido came out and took her into the house.
“I didn’t think anything of it. I was young,” McQuaid said.
Soon after, Garrido built the eight-foot privacy fence that now separates the two yards. McQuaid said he never saw the girl again. The next time he saw children near the Garrido house was this summer, when he saw two young girls riding in Garrido’s car.
Though the two children Dugard bore with Garrido are 15 and 11, McQuaid said the children he saw in Garrido’s car looked younger — closer to 8 and 10 years old.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  — A woman who entered a California police station is believed to be 1991 abduction victim Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was 11 when kidnapped.
Deputies are 99 percent sure the woman is Dugard, said Lt. Les Lovell of the El Dorado Sheriff’s Department. He says DNA tests were being conducted.
Witnesses reported that a vehicle with two people drove up to Dugard and abducted her while her stepfather was watching.
Lovell says two people have been taken into custody.
