UPDATED: 10-year-old boy fatally struck by car while riding scooter in South Whittier


SOUTH WHITTIER >> A 10-year-old boy died after being struck by a car while riding a scooter in the unincorporated county area of South Whittier on Friday afternoon, authorities said.
Eduardo Jara of Whittier succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner Investigator Mario Saenz said.
The collision was first reported about 4:45 p.m. on Sunshine Avenue, just east of Painter Avenue, California Highway Patrol officials said in a written statement.
An 18-year-old Whittier man was heading east on Sunshine Avenue at about 15 mph in a 1996 Ford Mustang, officials said.
“The pedestrian, a 10-year-old male on a scooter, traveled north from the south sidewalk from behind a parked vehicle and crossed directly in front of the path of the Ford,” according to the statement. “The driver of the Ford was unable to bring his vehicle to a complete stop in time before colliding with the 10-year-old pedestrian.”
Jara, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered major injuries, CHP officials said. He was flown to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center by helicopter for treatment.
CHP officials were notified about 8 p.m. that the boy had succumbed to his injuries, Officer Stefan Brandt said.
Authorities said the driver of the Ford remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The incident is under investigation by the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs-area office. Any witnesses, or anyone with information, can reach the office during normal business hours at 562-868-0503.

Pedestrian fatally struck by car in Pasadena


PASADENA >> A pedestrian died after being struck by a car on Washington Boulevard in Pasadena late Wednesday.
Few details were initially available regarding the fatal collision, which took place just before 9:50 p.m. along Washington Boulevard, between Lake Avenue and Prime Court, Pasadena police Lt. John Luna
“The driver remained at the scene,” Luna said.
No arrests had been reported late Wednesday.
The victim, who died at the scene, was initially described only as an adult.
Police shut down both directions of Washington Boulevard between Lake and El Molino avenues as investigators continued working at the scene Wednesday night, Luna said.
No further details were available.

UPDATED: Elderly West Covina woman fatally struck by truck at Eastland Center

WEST COVINA >> An elderly West Covina woman died after being run over by a flatbed truck in a parking lot at the Eastland Center shopping mall Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The fatal collision took place at 1:06 p.m. in the parking lot at the east end of the mall, 2753 E. Eastland Center Drive, in between a BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and a Chili’s Grill & Bar, West Covina police Detective David Sifling said.
West Covina firefighters were first on the scene of a reported collision between a vehicle and pedestrian, Sifling said.
They found the woman pinned beneath the dual rear wheels of an Airgas flatbed truck hauling metallic gas cylinders, he said.
It was immediately apparent the woman was beyond help, and paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene, the detective said. Her age was not available.
WCFATAL2The woman, described as a local resident in her 80s, was walking to the BJ’s with her adult daughter for lunch when she was struck by the backing truck, Sifling said.
Coroner’s officials did not release her name Thursday pending positive identification and notification of kin.
Sifling said the woman and her daughter were well-known at the BJ’s, and the neighboring Chili’s, where they dined often.
Chili’s closed for business for the remainder of the day, officials said.
Police interviewed the driver of the truck, who appeared distraught.
A witness, who declined to be identified, said the truck was backing up, with its backing alarm sounding, when the woman was struck.
An emotional family member at the scene did not wish to comment.
No arrests had been made as officers from the West Covina police Traffic Division continued, Sifling said.
Officers cordoned off a portion of the parking lot and escorted mall patrons to cars parked within the yellow police tape.

UPDATED: Elderly man fatally struck, dragged by car along Monterey Park-Alhambra border


MONTEREY PARK >> An elderly man died Thursday after being struck by a car in Monterey Park, then dragged under the vehicle for nearly a mile into Alhambra, authorities said.
The incident was reported about 3:30 p.m. along Hellman Avenue, west of Atlantic Boulevard, along the border between Monterey Park and Alhambra, Alhambra police officials said.
A woman in her 30s struck the man, described as being in his 70s, but did not immediately realize it, Monterey Park police Lt. Scott Wiese said.
The woman continued driving home, ultimately stopping about three-quarters of a mile away, across the city border in Alhambra, Wiese said. She called 9-1-1 after discovering the victim’s body pinned beneath her car.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene, Wiese said. His identity was not available.
Police followed the blood trail left by the vehicle to the apparent point of impact at Hellman Avenue and Hathaway Street in Monterey Park, where the victim’s shoes were found in the roadway.
Though initially handled by Alhambra police, the investigation was turned over to police in Monterey Park after officials determined the point of impact was in their city, officials said.
Investigators obtained a blood sample from the driver, as is standard procedure in any fatal collision, but noted no obvious signs that intoxication played a role in the incident. The driver cooperated with police.
The investigation was ongoing.

Elderly Rosemead couple struck by pickup truck while crossing street


ROSEMEAD >> An elderly husband and wife suffered major injuries Wednesday when they were struck by a pickup truck while crossing a street in their hometown of Rosemead, authorities said.
The collision took place about 6:15 p.m. along Walnut Grove Avenue, just south of Garvey Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Ismael Chavez said.
The couple, described as a Rosemead man and wife in their 70s, were crossing Walnut Grove mid-block, without a crosswalk, when they were struck by a southbound pickup truck, the lieutenant said.
The woman was hospitalized in critical condition, Chavez said. Her husband suffered significant head injuries and was hospitalized in stable condition.
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, he said. Investigators determined the driver was unlicensed and had been driving without headlights on, though the sun set at 4:51 p.m. Wednesday.
No arrests were made at the scene, Chavez said. Deputies will present their ultimate findings to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for consideration of charges.

Senior citizen struck by car, badly injured while crossing Whittier Boulevard


WHITTIER >> A senior citizen suffered major injuries Tuesday when he was struck by a car in a Whittier Boulevard crosswalk, officials said.
The collision took place about 11:20 a.m. along Whittier Boulevard at Central Avenue, Whittier police Lt. Bryan Ellis said.
A 67-year-old Whittier man was walking south in a crosswalk when he was struck by a Nissan Sentra making a left turn onto Whittier Boulevard from the parking lot of the Quad at Whittier shopping center, Ellis said.
He suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in critical condition, the lieutenant said. An update on his condition was not available Wednesday.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation, he said. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Man struck by freight train in Industry

INDUSTRY >> A man was seriously injuries but expected to survive after he was struck by a freight train while walking along a set of tracks in Industry late Wednesday, authorities said.
The man was struck by a Union Pacific train about 8:30 p.m. on a set of railroad tracks alongside the 13400 block of Crossroads Parkway North, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Raymond Enriquez said.
He was walking east on the tracks when the train approached from behind him, also heading east, the lieutenant said.
The conductor spotted the man and sounded the train’s horn, Enriquez said. The man apparently tried to get off the tracks but didn’t make it in time, and was grazed by the train as it passed by.
The pedestrian, initially described as a man in his 20s, suffered serious injuries to his legs, Enriquez said. He was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Officials from the Union Pacific Police Department are handling the investigation.
