Police sell pink patches to fight breast cancer at L.A. County Fair; 44 departments from across nation taking part

IRWINDALE >> A small Southern California police department’s colorful effort to combat breast cancer has spread like wildfire, with 44 police agencies from across the region and the nation now joining the campaign by trading their traditional shoulder patches for bright pink versions.
Police are staffing a “Pink Patch Project” booth during the L.A. County Fair at the Fairplex in Pomona this month, where guests can purchase T-shirts, challenge coins, and of course, pink police department patches offered by the dozens of participating agencies, according Irwindale Police Sgt. Rudy Gatto.
The project has been well-received by fellow police officers and the public, Gatto said.
“In just three days at the L.A. County Fair, we have raised upwards of $10,000, (and) that’s just at the fair,” the sergeant said.
Proceeds from the memorabilia sales are being donated to fund cancer research, treatment and education, officials said.

The Irwindale Department was inspired by the Seal Beach Police Department, which gave officers pink patches in 2013 to stimulate conversation and raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“That year, the Irwindale Police Department raised over $20,000 for City of Hope,” Irwindale police said in a written statement.
This year, the department reached out to expand the project, Gatto explained. About 20 agencies from the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Association initially joined in, followed by another two-dozen who heard of the project largely via social media outreach.
In addition to dozens of Southern California police agencies, departments as far away as New Mexico and New Jersey have joined the effort by sporting pink. A police sergeant from the Lyndhurst Police Department in New Jersey planned to visit the Punk Patch Project booth at the L.A. County Fair on Sunday, Gatto said.
During Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, officers in participating agencies wear the pink patches in lieu of their usual ones.
The Pink Patch Project is also come as a boon for law enforcement patch collectors, who have seen more and more department’s stop selling their normal department patches to the public in recent years over safety concerns.

LA County health inspector under investigation for sex assault at Pomona Bakery

Pomona cops are investigating — and the alleged pervert has been placed on unpaid leave as of this afternoon, offiicials said.

POMONA — The owner of a Pomona bakery says a Los Angeles County health inspector sexually assaulted her during a compliance check late last month in an ordeal captured by surveillance cameras.

The woman says health inspector Magdy Tawadros used his county position and the guise of a health inspection to intimidate and grope her in a back room of her business on March 24.

“I didn’t know what to do,” said the 45-year-old woman, whose name and place of business are withheld to protect her identity. “I was afraid I would get a bad grade on the inspection. I felt helpless.”

The woman filed a claim for damage with Los Angeles County on April 1 seeking up to $10 million in damages.

Eileen Ponce murder case moves closer to trial — a note from her mom

Hi all,

Just wanted to share with you that I received an official subpoena from the District Attorney’s office to report as a witness in my daughter’s case on Feb. 11. So now it does look like, FINALLY, that the trial will soon begin. It will be two-years since we found my daughter Eileen on Feb. 15, 2008. Unfortunately, I’ll be going to the same courthouse where I found my daughter’s body, but either way, I’m thankful that the killer has been in custody and that we will be going to trial. I’m also going to court on Feb. 9 for the Readiness date (too see if both sides are actually ready to proceed) which now, I believe they both are since we received these subpoenas, and then on Feb. 11 is when they begin to select the jury, then afterwards the trial will start. I hear the trial may take up to 10-days.

Anyways, for those of you who have went to trial in your loved one case or who are still waiting, I wanted to share with you that after receiving the subpoena, it did something to me emotionally and I wasn’t expecting to feel that way and just wanted to know from those who have went to trial already, is this normal, or is this our kind of normal???

See, like many of us Parents Of Murdered Children, I have prayed to get to trial so that part could be put behind us, but when the day actually comes, it seems sort of surreal and for some reason it put a fear in me, why? I don’t know, because I pray everyday for Justice and I truly believe we will receive it, but I hate having that bit of doubt and confusion in my heart because it totally scared the hell out of me!!

Anyways, I presume the opening remarks will begin on that following Monday, Feb. 15 and if you have time available to support us in the courtroom, it will be greatly appreciated. The courthouse is located at 400 Civic Center Plaza, Pomona, CA. I’ll let you know the exact room number as soon as I know it. And if you can’t come, I understand, but if you believe in the power of prayer, I’m asking that you please pray for our family, the witnesses, the incoming jury and our DA during this time so that everything proceeds in an efficient manner and the killer is found GUILTY!!

Lawsuit alleges Pomona police checkpoints unfairly target Latinos

LOS ANGELES – A federal lawsuit accuses Pomona police of intimidating residents who complained about police checkpoints in Latino neighborhoods.

The plaintiffs include more than 50 people who attended an August 2008 community meeting to discuss the checkpoints, which some residents say targeted Latinos.

Plaintiffs say police officers in plainclothes came to the meeting at a local religious center and threatened and intimidated participants. The lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles accuses the officers of interfering with their rights to free speech, assembly and religion.

Mark Gluba, assistant to the city manager in Pomona, said Tuesday officials are studying the allegations.

Police have said the checkpoints were set up to look for drunk drivers and traffic safety violations.

Walnut man shot during break-in attempt

Here’s the story:

A Walnut man who forced his way into a Pomona apartment Monday evening was shot after he stabbed a man inside the residence.

Paramedics flew Anthony Zabele, 27, to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds to his lower legs.

Police received a call about a stabbing and shooting in the 700 block of East Third Street at 6:14 p.m. They found Keith Kilpatrick, 28, of San Bernardino, April Chacon, 24, of Pomona and Zabele in the apartment.

Officers discovered that Zabele entered the apartment and attacked Kilpatrick and Chacon. Kilpatrick was stabbed during the fight. Kilpatrick shot Zabele in self-defense, police said.

There was the West Covina woman found shot to death in Pomona.
How long until Fox News or CNN pays attention? (Don’t hold your breath — none of these women were teen prom queens, models or lived on the East Coast)

Florida man arrested by Feds for pimping teen in Pomona

Here’s a press release from the US Department of Justice:

A Florida man was arrested last night by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department on federal charges that he prostituted a 17-year-old girl he solicited through her page on the MySpace website and then offered her services on Craigslist.

Christopher Tyrone Young, also known as “Staydown,” 28, of Orlando, Florida, was arrested last night in San Diego after being named in a criminal complaint filed Monday in United States District Court in Santa Ana. The complaint charges Young with one count of sex trafficking of children.

The investigation into Young began on March 24 after investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department arrested a 17-year-old girl on prostitution charges. After it was learned that the girl was a runaway minor from Florida, investigators determined that she was working for a pimp that the girl later identified as Young, according to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint.

Young allegedly contacted the girl last October and, after promising to make her a “star,” gave her a bus ticket from Florida to Las Vegas, Nevada. Following a three-day bus trip from Florida to Las Vegas, Young brought the girl to Orange County, where he had her work as a prostitute. Using sexually explicit photos he took of the girl, Young placed an ad on the Craigslist website for Orange County that offered sexual services, the affidavit alleges. Young later had the girl working as a prostitute by walking streets in the California cities of Anaheim, Pomona and Montclair, as well as in Las Vegas. The affidavit also alleges that Young had sex with the girl and provided her with the drug ecstasy.

Young is expected to make his initial court appearance this afternoon in federal court in Santa Ana.
