Porn industry considers its options

The porn industry spent much of the past few days considering its options now that Los Angeles County voters have approved Measure B. The ordinance requires that condoms should be used in porn movies shot in LA.

Not so fast. First of all it won’t apply in Long Beach, Vernon or Pasadena.

But it also won’t apply in other cities in the county, unless (and until) the various city councils decide to adopt Measure B’s provisions. At least that’s the opinion of adultbizlaw.com in a post titled “Ballot Measure B – So What Happens Now?”

In order for this law to take effect in cities such as Los Angeles, Glendale, Malibu or any of the 85 independent towns and cities in Los Angeles County – each one of those cities will have to independently debate, vote on and themselves pass/adopt Ballot Measure B as law in their town. How long will that take is anyone’s guess at this point. And it is not certain that all 85 independent towns and cities will even adopt Ballot Measure B. I can envision a situation in which some of the smaller towns that do not have any contact with the adult entertainment industry will simply ignore this law entirely.

Meanwhile the folks behind Measure B are looking for ways to take it statewide.

This from the Long Beach Press-Telegram:

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation said Thursday it is seeking a state lawmaker to carry a bill that would broaden the power of the state and local governments to enforce health codes requiring condom use on porn sets.

Stay tuned. it’s going to get interesting.

Vivid Entertainment owner says condoms bad for porn biz

An open letter (

VividVideoXXX.pdf)

from Vivid Entertainment Founder Steven Hirsch takes aim at a proposed Los Angeles County ballot measure that would require porn actors to wear condoms on set.

In his letter Hirsch says porn actors and actresses are less likely than the general population to contract HIV and other STDs. Here’s a quote:

“Bottom line: Measure B is a bad idea. Our County officials have no business regulating sexual behavior between consenting adults, intervening into how films are produced, or invading our bedrooms — real or pretend.”

Porn production in LA hit by syphilis scare

A porn performer has tested positive for syphilis and a possible shutdown of the industry is looming, officials said. The outbreak may have originated in Europe.

From the LA Times:

Los Angeles County’s Public Health Department said it was investigating a
cluster of possible syphilis cases within the porn industry.

The agency
said it had received reports of at least five cases involving adult
performers within a week.

The cat did it

A Florida man blamed his cat for causing him some Internet problems. (h/t Fred Robledo)

MARTIN COUNTY – Martin County Sheriff’s detectives didn’t buy it when a 48-year-old Jensen Beach man claimed that his cat was downloading child pornography on his computer.

Keith R. Griffin, of the 3600 block of Northeast Jeannette Drive, was charged Wednesday with 10 counts of possession of child pornography after detectives found more than 1,000 child pornographic images on his computer, according to a news release.

El Monte man charged in federal child porn case after applying for job with CHP

From an FBI press release:

EL MONTE MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY MOLESTED MINORS AND IS
CHARGED FEDERALLY WITH PRODUCTION & POSSESSION OF CHILD
PORNOGRAPHY ATTEMPTED TO WORK FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

Los Angeles – An El Monte man who was arrested for molesting a minor, has been charged federally with the possession and production of illegal pornographic images of his victim. The SAFE Team (Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement), which includes investigators with multiple state, local and federal agencies, is releasing the man’s photograph in order to locate additional victims that may not yet have been identified.

This investigation was initiated when investigators with the California Highway Patrol uncovered alleged criminal activity during a preliminary employment background check. Written responses made during the applicant process led to a CHP investigation of Christian Hernandez, 29, for the alleged molestation of a five year-old child. According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, Hernandez applied to be an officer with the California Highway Patrol in October 2008.
Hernandez admitted on an employment questionnaire that he had accessed illegal pornography on the Internet, and had viewed illicit photos of a minor as recently as one-month prior to applying for employment, according to the complaint.

SANTA ANA – A Florida woman is accused of making more than $8.5 million from an online prostitution business that claimed to employ porn stars and fashion models.

Michelle Braun appeared Monday in federal court in Orange County and was allowed to remain free pending her next pretrial hearing next month.

The Boca Raton woman is accused of charging clients $50,000 or more to spend the night with adult film stars, models, and actresses. Prosecutors say she used her travel business, Global Travel Network Inc., to launder the money.

Braun pleaded not guilty in March to money laundering and transporting someone for prostitution purposes. Under a plea agreement, prosecutors say she is expected to change her plea to guilty before her next hearing.

Braun and her lawyer declined to comment.

The OC Register broke this story Tuesday. The story claims that porn queen McKenzie Lee was among those offered to clients…

Child porn conviction could net former teacher 10 years

This from staff writer Robert Hong:

A former teacher at Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena pleaded guilty today to possessing child pornography.

The illegal images were found on a computer belonging to 63-year-old David Hassler when authorities searched his home in November 2007, authorities said. He was among about 10,000 of people arrested in nationwide federal investigation into on-line child pornography.

Hassler, who pleaded guilty in federal court in downtown Los Angeles, could be sentenced to up to 10 years in federal prison.
