Coast Guard searches for possible downed aircraft in ocean near Redondo Beach

REDONDO BEACH >> The U.S. Coast Guard launched a search operation Saturday after receiving reports that an aircraft had possibly gone down in the Pacific Ocean near Redondo Beach, authorities said.
Coast Guard officials based in the USCG’s Los Angeles-Long Beach Sector received a distress call from an aircraft’s emergency location transmitter beacon about 11:45 a.m., USCG officials said in a written statement. The possible emergency was believed to have occurred about two miles north of the Redondo Beach Harbor.
“Shortly after the initial notification, several witnesses reported seeing an oil sheen on the surface of the water near the Redondo Beach Harbor entrance,” according to the statement.
A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a 45-foot rescue boat began searching the area, with help from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Baywatch Redondo Beach. No crash site had been located Saturday afternoon.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the USCG at 310-521-3805.

El Monte woman found floating in Pacific a possible suicide

Here’s the story, first reported in our sister paper the Daily Breeze by Larry Altman:

Whale watchers on a boat a quarter-mile off Redondo Beach on Wednesday spotted a woman’s body floating in the water.

Police said their preliminary investigation indicates the woman committed suicide.
Sightseers aboard the Voyager noticed the body about 10:30 a.m. Nearly 100 people, including many children, were aboard, Redondo Beach police Sgt. Phil Keenan said.
Redondo Beach Harbor Patrol officers pulled the woman – identified later as Cindy Denq, 39, of El Monte – from the water onto their boat and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but she was already dead.

Meth bust nets El Monte man featured on America’s Most Wanted

This from the City News Service:

A narcotics unit of the Redondo Beach Police Department announced today the arrest of a suspected drug dealer who turned out to be wanted for two murders in Colorado and was
profiled on “America’s Most Wanted.”

The Redondo PD’s Special Investigations Unit got a tip about an alleged
narcotics dealer who lived in Montebello, said Sgt. Gene Tomatani.

While the suspect was under surveillance Monday, he was allegedly observed
selling methamphetamine to a buyer in a shopping center parking lot in El
Monte, the sergeant said.

Officers arrested 28-year-old Rodolfo “Rudy” Gonzalez, who allegedly had a
small amount of contraband on him, and also took the buyer into custody,
Tomatani said.

When Gonzalez was taken into custody, he casually remarked that he was wanted
for two murders and refused to say more, according to the sergeant, who said
the suspect also gave police a phony name.

Meanwhile, he was jailed in the Redondo Beach lockup, and a search warrant was obtained late last night to search his home in Montebello, where three pounds of methamphetamine and a smaller quantity of cocaine and marijuana were recovered, Tomatani said.
