Calling all SGV QBs, Clarkson Camp at Rose Bowl Feb. 27 ...

| | Comments (32) |

What: Steve Clarkson's Dreammaker QB Tour stops in Pasadena on Saturday, Feb. 27. There's a free symposium (I have no idea what that means either) for parents and kids on Feb. 26 at the Westin in Old Town Pasadena at 6 p.m. in the Fountain Ballroom.

Star attractions: Former USC and current NFL QBs Matt Leinart and Matt Cassel will be helping Clarkson on Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

Local angle: From what I hear, a few SGV QBs will be participating and I'm hoping more will join soon. If you know of any, please leave a comment here. There will also be five of the nation's top QB recruits will be participating.

More info: Visit Clarkson's site for more information and to sign up for the tour. Participants can range between 6th and 12th grades.
Matt Leinart will be there. Will you?

J. Elway,

Clarkson didn't allow him to compete, the kids said that Clarkson was worried that the kid wouldn't put up good numbers. The kid was their, he looked good, but not verbral intent to USC. I was told that Clarkson and someone at USC did this whole PR stunt for Clarkson's "Dreammaker".

J. Elway said:

IE Insider, how did the prodigy do at the camp? Did anyone else get a chance to see the Romine kid from Upland on Sat? How did he do? Any other IE standouts?

Reno Hightower, your point is valid but not relative to my comments. The kids signed up to be rated on their quarterback skills, to see what they need to improve on. All the crap I heard about Clarkson camps was true, I honestly didn't think it would be as bad as I was told, but it was worse.

There aren't very many good quarterback camps around. I will say Bob Johnson's CAMP QUARTERBACK is really good. They are also not near as expensive as Clarkson's camps. The big difference is Bob Johnson's is in it for the love of the sport. He doesn't provide very many camps and they fill up real quick.

Quarterbacks Coached by Bob, Bret and Rob Johnson
Drew Brees - New Orleans
Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay
Jay Cutler - Chicago
Carson Palmer - Cincinnati
Matt Schaub - Houston
Ben Roethlisberger - Pittsbugh
Matt Cassel - Kansas City
Kyle Orton - Denver
Trent Edwards - Buffalo
JaMarcus Russel - Oakland
Matthew Stafford - Detroit
Mark Sanchez - New York
Derek Anderson - Cleveland
Pat White - Miami

Reno to Camper Special and Waste of Money. It is hard to judge (don't know how many) so many qbs objectively. Reno only knows that a teaching ratio of maybe 6/10 to 1 is probably about right. That is not goona happen at the teaser special one day event. It takes months of biweekly sessions reinforcing these mechanics. Look at tennis, golf, pitching Coaches. Sounds like Symposium was correct about PT Barnum: "Theres a sucker born everyday." So, if "Johnny BeGoode" signs up for Camp ($150), Website ($410 year), Highlite DVD ($200), andQB Retreat ($750)does he get free ($1510)Hoody sweatshirt?

My son's coach told us the same thing. I was very surprised how poorly some of the area top quarterbacks did. I think if Fred and Aram were there they would be reconsidering their top quarterbacks. The freshmen quarterback from Cathedral was a stud. I guess he was one of Clarkson kids. Interesting my son this kid was 100% sure he was going to make it to the finals.

That 13 year old that got the letter of intent from USC was there. Clarkson didn't allow him to participate. Saw the kid warming up, he was good but a letter of intent from USC, not.

Camper Special said:

Waste of Money, I told you! Read my post on Feb. 25th 11pm. I have attended one of Clarkson's Camps the Super 7 last year at Citrus College. What I noticed then was that Clarkson and staff catered to all his students over any other QB who signed up to learn something. That 6'8" kid you mentioned is probably a new student of his or Daddy signed a huge check to get him started in his program.

Waste of Money .... said:

This camp was the biggest joke I have ever seen. During the first round I noticed very little scoring. At one point I watched the guys that were doing the scoring going to get food and not even present during multi kid’s tryouts. They then told us that each kid was going to get a second attempt at all the events. After the second attempt they would cut the field down around 50%. Then they would go through it again and drop the number down to 15 kids. Then they would go one more time to get the final number. Well they ran out of time and only did the first cycle. So they had to make the cuts with no scores on most of the kids. A good example would be one kid he was 6’8” at least, throw eight balls at the targets and missed all eight, didn’t even hit the target. At the long toss he threw the ball 45 yards at best. At the roll out and throw his foot work well he didn’t have any foot work. This kid was by far the worse kid in his group but somehow he made the semi cut.

Waste of time and money.......

Symposium Special said:

The symposium consisted of all the services that Clarkson's Dreamamkers offers. That includeda variety of QB Camps ($150 and UP!), highlight dvd packages (several levels with rising prices), a personal website attached to Clarkson" website ($34.95 per month), and accessories (shirts, hats, custom helmet$$$). Clarkson used alot of "Look what I have done for Leinert, Clausen, 13 year old Sills" to press home his pitch. Large ballroom was 90% filled with Clarkson as PT Barnum. I guess that this is the new recruiting tools for the scholarships of the future and you had better jump aboard somehow because the train is leaving the station. Look @ Rivals, Scouts Inc., and ESPNU if you don't think its happening.

Reno Hightower said:

Reno agrees with you QB Coach. Clarkson does provide a quality service for those can afford it and and are willing to put in the time and effort. If Reno's kid was a piano prodigy they would get a good music teacher. Unfortunately, Reno's boy is a prodigy at after school detention but there is no out of pocket expense. It is just the whole "Hold your kid back 1 year so he can compete athetically/academically against younger kids (Calusen/Gerhart)graduate 1/2 year early to participate in college" idea. Everyone wants their children to succeed but at what price?

Camper Special said:

According to Steve Clarkson's Dream maker web site you pay $150.00 to particapate in 4 testing sites. 1 Accuracy Challenge
2 Pocket Presence Drill
3 Long Distance Toss
4 Player Interview
Seems like alot for only 4 different activities? But good luck to all hopefully it wont be a wet dream.(Rain)

Anyone on this blog that thinks Clarkson doesn’t know what he is talking about when it comes to quarterbacking should leave this blog and never come back.

Is this a money maker of course! That in itself doesn’t make this a problem. Where it gets complicated is when parents who wish their kids were elite QBs…but really aren’t. What do you think a guy you’re paying is going to say about your kid? At a minimum he will say he has potential and he needs to keep working at it even if he is really bad. That’s when parents need to smart enough to recognize the situation for what it is.

If you kid has undeniable special gift and someone with creditability that your not paying confirms it. Then you bring him to Steve and you will get more than your monies worth.

Reno Hightower said:

Married in Reno? Were you divorced in Mexico? Marriages, divorces, Clarkson Dreammaker Tour, there is money to be made and Steve will take cash, check, ATM, or money order. (Make that money order out to cash-IRS purposes, you know) Clarkson "clients" tend to be distant from the team. Look at how they arrive at certain schools? Do they stay at those schools or search for greener pastures? JP Losman skips out at UCLA after ONE spring football camp for Tulane. QB mechanics are more complicated than a major league pitchers and Reno agrees that a private will help those mechanics. Still, it is a team sport. Ever see Jeff George chase down an interception? Oh, such is the life of a lonely gunslinger...

i heard that a prodgy from upland is gonna be there...his name is Nate Romine..look him up on youtube

I got married in Reno , lol said:

Reno maybe that's why you're in the van conversion business, lol. You're looking at the short end of the stick there with your math and revenue streams. Clarkson will make more from the series than he will from the nickels and dimes he picks up at these tryouts. The real money is in duplication and branding. He can't be everywhere but "his" program can and the big dollars are in private sessions for the very very bluest of bloods.

Like I said he does extremely well with high IQ kids and exceptionally well with High IQ Football kids. I'm interested in seeing the camp and plan on attending to see for myself. Damien has three solid QB prospects for next year and their competition should be fierce so I'm wondering how many will attend, hopefully all of them even though i hear Gano was a stud QB himself.

One thing I don't like about the new throwing style being taught today is it makes all the throws all out affairs. Almost like fireballing pitchers and that leads to interceptions. I like Aaron Rogers mechanics and Drew Brees as well as they put the ball behind their ear, old school style. Another thing I don't like about the new style Qbs is, unlike Big Ben, they all seem distant from the rest of the team. Not enough Warner and too much like Leinart if you know what I mean. Maybe these Camps do that to team dynamics as well...who knows?

I wonder if anyone knew how Steve gets all those receivers for all those passes? Reno any info on that? Aram? any chance WR could show up as well? Someone has to catch all those passes!!!

Real Quarterbacks said:

It is going to be interesting to see who shows up to this camp. It would be great to see kids like Rios and Ball. I don't expect to see Rios, very questionable qb skills. It's still not to late to sign up....

Reno Hightower said:

Reno agrees that Old Man Cuccia was a real "nail the coffin shut" dude when it came to the scoreboard. Reno also knows math. Dreammaker Tours has a dozen stops at various cities across the US. One hundred kids @ $150 a pop eguals $15,000. Don't forget follow up camps, private sessions, dvds, and t-shirts. CHA-CHING! On the other side, Jimmy Clausen just didn't happen and now he will make a ton of cash himself. For every Clausen, there is a JP Losman and some other kid who didn't make it "big." Again, Clarkson found a niche, exploited that niche, and is making a comfortable living doing so. Reno might be a bit jealous as the van conversion business is in the recession too. Still, when Reno is mad he is still the biggest prick in all of South Kern County!

Happy Valley Ugly said:

Not to be a downer but Cuccia's Dad recruited his butt off and poached players from local teams. I'm not saying transfers, I'm saying "poached"!!! Credit to him for making the players into believers but somehow, as with all high school players, sooner or later they hit a wall. Ron was a great player, with incredible instincts and an incredible ability to earn the respect of his opponents but his Dad was a jerk the way he on side kicked time after time in that 70-0 game that ended at half time. Everyone in the City was talking about the incident but give Lincoln credit they handled it with class when it could have gotten Happy Valley Ugly, real quick! Other than a few star players Wilson was an average team, with average size and mammoth heart and determination. They were really something special to see and I doubt these eyes will ever see a tougher team that handled pressure better. The Mules were the Real Deal.

Those that hate Clarkson because of the agent angle have a great point. Tough to argue the local kids perspective but than again Thropay and Santiago weren't even Clarkson QB pupils and tehy supplanted local CO QBs, right?

Reno Hightower said:

Reno knows a thing or two regarding QB play. Yes, Ronnie Cuccia started 3 years in front of Clarkson at LA Wilson. And Clarkson may have been in front of that Elway dude for City POY(John had a knee injury in football but pitched his team to the City title in baseball at Dodger Stadium for Granada Hills). Wilson used to crank it up on opponents; Lincoln broaded a bus at halftime and went home trailing 70-0. Reno sees that Clarkson has found a lucrative niche as a private QB coach, much like a girl's softball pitching coach. He works on the mechanics and speciality drills that brings out the talent. Unfortunately, Clarkson has also become an "agent" for his "client" QBs. This Kid goes here, that Kid goes there and there is a domino effect. What happens to the homegrown kid? As with any succesful business, you may not see the boss but one of his associates until your portfolio warrants the boss's attention. Sadly, that is how it is nowadays. BTW, that Elway kid did better then that Clarkson kid when they squared off in Denver after the trade. Reno knows QB play.

Dear Steve was a monster: actually, Steve was the starter for only one year, only because of Ron Cuccia, but i feel that he was a better QB than Cuccia, while wilson won 4 straight city titles, steve was the qb for the last one, cuccia won player of the year 3 times in a row and clarkson won it 1, beating out john elway of granada hills, im think steve clarksons successes, speak for them selves, look at his alumni at the qb position, if my son had what it takes to be a qb, i would want Clarkson to teach him

Steve was a monster!!! said:

Aaron maybe you think The Dream Maker concept is junk but I actually saw Steve play back in his Wilson days and he was a monster. 39-1 with three straight CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS and CITY POY honors. Sounds like Chris Allen #'s but Steve was a true artist. And later his coach at St. Jose St was Elway's Dad. His coach at Wilson was Ron Cuccia's dad who didn't do too bad with his son, who I also played against. Fair to say Mc D was a SGV legend but Ron Cuccia was a National Legend.

Back to Steve, he's legit although not every one's cup of tea. He has mechanics down, does a great job of communicating his program to highly intelligent, high Football IQ kids. Matter of fact I remember when every one thought Steve was going no where with his "embryotic" idea of a QB school for kids from "VARIOUS" schools. He believed in his plan while everyone laughed, who's laughing now?

Playing the QB position much ore complex than it's ever been and any Qb would do well to give Steve a chance. A few years ago I thought a DL Camp would do wonders for the SGV but that went nowhere as too many coaches squirrel away their talent regardless of their ability to teach. Don't get me wrong some programs like DR and BA have outstanding DB coaches but Position Camps would do any kids wonders as Steve has shown.

Maybe the reason so many HCs allow/encourage/tolerate QB Camps is precisely because they are limited in that area in terms of mechanics, mind set, preparation and timing.

The Camp I'd like to see in action would be the Manning Camp, as that family understands the position better than most and has had nothing but class associated with their program.

Big AT whats going on buddy,

Livingston is the starting QB at Covina.

Good to have you back

Bonita has a good quarterback coach in Chuck Chastain, hopefully Garrett and him work together a lot since Basketball is over. And yes I know Coach Chastain moved to take over the Frosh program which had one of the best seasons in years...but the Freshman don't come for awhile so it's time to tutor the QBs.

Honestly Quarterbacks in order to develop need a coach that will spend that one on one time with them and this dream maker stuff is dumb. I forget but Cody Fajardo got cut from that show on Fox...I think they were wrong, he only won a section and state title. Kid is going to Nevada, probably will redshirt but after then who knows.

Just another "MONEYMAKER" for Clarkson !

From what I hear -- Rocky Moore (La Canada), Carson Blake of San Marino and William Livingston of Glendora will be there. I have no idea if the last two guys either attend those schools or simply live in those cities. I also don't know their age.

Great to hear Cantu will be there!

Curious -- Go to Clarkson's site to find out how much. I provided the link in the original post.
