Sources: Northview offers job to DC Marcel Perez …

Northview has offered its vacant head coach position to defensive coordinator Marcel Perez, according to sources.

Perez was initially offered the job and turned it down due to stipulations that weren’t met by the school. But sources says he’s reconsidering.

The Vikings are coming off a 1-9 season. Jim Arellanes resigned earlier this month to take the reins at Los Altos.

Aram’s take: I have to believe that there’s a bit of tunnel vision going on here with the school and Perez. Teaching positions are nearly impossible to come by these days and Perez already has one. So could the school really go out and get an outsider if it even wanted to? The answer is probably not. And this is the problem at Temple City as well. Teaching positions. It all comes down to teaching positions.

this hasn’t been mentioned – but I thought Ron Rice the basketball coach was retiring also. Yes or no? Replacement there?

So Coach Perez is reconsidering after turning it down last week. What could have changed after a week? No other takers? Coach perez is the easy pick, but is he enough?
I’m told Coach Perez wanteed a teaching postion for an offensive co-ordinator but was turned down. Coach Perez only knows defense, so he will definitely need help on the other side of the ball.
    Lots of luck NV.

The reality is a football head coach in So. Cal. should be a regular teaching position. Working 100 hour weeks for 5 months and 60 hours the other 7 with a small stipend and little or no recognition but plenty of insults, supervising 150 youngmen(varsity,jv,frosh)and 20 or so adult assts. It’s no wonder there are so many open spots at this late date. Coaches are burning out and getting little or no help from the administrators. I know the argument will be if we make that job a teaching post then why not the golf coach? I think coaches are far more valuable than administrators and so called counselers. Get rid of some of them>

    Reality,

    Couldn’t agree more!!!

If I had my way, the head football, basketball and baseball coach would be a full-time job. And the head football coach would be able to have two assts., whose jobs would also be full time, i.e. offensive and defensive coordinators.

I admit, I’m often guilty of not seeing the education side of things. I think sports are so damn important socially and community-wise that it makes sense to give them way more budget.

  • The Future is Comming Fast

THE FUTURE OF HIGH SCHOOL COACHING, ESPECIALLY FOOTBALL.

COACHES WILL BE A SEPERATE ENTITY SORT OF A SIDE BUSINESS, WITH THE COACHES BEING ALOOWED TO FUND RAISE AND CHARGE PARENTS FOR COACHING THIER KIDS
AS WE PROGRESS INTO THE NEXT DECADE THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE ENOUGH CASH FOR INSURANCE BUDGETS AND SO FORTH.
CURRENTLY SCHOOLS PAY FOR INSURANCE, BUSES, UNIFORMS, LIGHTS ETC, IF THE SCHOOLS RAN SPORTS AS A BUSINESS THEN THEY WOULD HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHARGE FOR FIELD USE, LIGHTS AND WOULD NOT PAY FOR BUSES.
ALMOST LIKE CLUB TEAMS, THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT COULD RUN A BETTER SPORTS PROGRAMS THEN MOST A.D.’S AND MAKE QUITE A PROFIT AS WELL AS PAY THIER COACHES HANDSOMELY.

LOOK AT MANY OF THE CLUB TEAMS AND POP WARNER PROGRAMS THEY CAN TURN THE DOLLAR AND THEN SOME.

OR SECEND SOLUTION GO BACK TO BANTAMS AND JR BANTAMS IN FOOTBALL GET THE SCHOOLS AND THE CIF OUT OF THE WAY, LET KIDS SIGN UP WHERE THEY WANT AND PLAY BALL JUST LIKE TRAVEL BALL.

BECAUSE WEATHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT A CHANGE IS COMING, HOW IS IT THAT THE TRAVEL TEAMS CAN GO ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND OUT OF STATE SEVERAL TIMES A SEASON BUT THE LOCAL SCHOOLS CANT PAY FOR QUALITY COACH OR BUSES.

IF A GROUP WANTS A TRACK TEAM OR A SOCCER TEAM THEN PAY FOR IT, DONT FORCE THE SCHOOLS TO PAY FOR EVERY SPORT, WHEN ONLY A HANDFUL OF KIDS PLAY AND A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE COME TO WATCH, CRAZY.

    A CHANGE IS COMING, I CANT WAIT….

Coach Perez will need help tying his shoes.

    Future,

It sounds like your model is already in progress at several private schools such as Servite, Serra, Cathedral, Oaks Christian and Orange Lutheran. These schools already get the privately coached QB, some who come from out of state. For cash strapped public schools why not have District teams? Alhambra School District would have AHS, Keppel, and SG at the new field at SGHS. Hacienda/La Puente would be a powerhouse, as well as Pasadena, and possibly field two programs. Single districts could combine such as TC/Arcadia and Bonita/San Dimas. Possible problems include recruitment and sliding pay scales due to income/star athlete. However, this problems already exist. Colleges already recruit from Club teams in basketball, v-ball, soccer. Why not football? Every weekend would have mega games before large audiences with gate revenue, concessions, and parking. Single games on Thursday and Friday with a doubleheader on Saturday at a central facility (Bonita HS/La Puente HS) would reduce overall costs and maintaining of the facility (single clean up crew).

    Futue/Reno,
Coach Perez is in a tough spot. He has always been a good soldier, but he is not a general. He will be in way over his head if NVHS does not help out with an experienced offensive co-ordinator.
Hopefully the lefty at QB has gotten his act together and starts preparing himself right now.

So the ball has bounced back into Coach Perez’s court. It seems the difficulties Northview is having in naming a head football coach can only mean a couple of things. 1) not much in the coaching pool is applying for the job, or 2)the administration is dragging it’s feet in giving support to Coach Marcel. As discussed before, in order to be successful a head coach needs good assistants. I’m sure Coach Perez realizes this and probably has asked for help in securing a staff. With Spring upon us, I believe the school adminstration needs to be more creative in ways to help this occur. Football and all the activites surrounding it, is a major part of high school. Let’s try to make this a postive memory.
