Bishop Amat QB Brock Booth advances to next round of Steve Clarkson’s Dreamaker challenge …

Bishop Amat quarterback Brock Booth has advanced to the next round of Steve Clarkson’s Dreamaker quarterback competition.

Booth pulled it off with a strong showing at Clarkson’s camp held at the Rose Bowl back in late February. Booth was among those chosen out of the group to head to Santa Barbara for the next round where he’ll compete against what Clarkson calls “an even stronger group of athletes”.

In Santa Barbara, Booth will be competing for a spot in the elite Super 7 event in Maui. Obviously, this would make him one of the top QB prospects in the country if he advances.

Booth, a senior-to-be, transferred to Bishop Amat from South Hills this offseason in hopes of competing for the open quarterback position. Lancers coach Steve Hagerty confirmed last month that Booth is in the mix for the job along with five others, among whom is Rio Ruiz, who Hagerty reluctantly labeled the front runner.

Aram’s take:
Looky here, looky here. That’s a pretty nice opportunity for Booth. The Santa Barbara competition ought to be pretty fierce, but he certainly proved to be among the better arms at the Rose Bowl competition in Feb. Let’s root him on. I have no idea what this means, if anything, about the QB situation at Amat. But it certainly can’t hurt Booth’s confidence or chances as he bids for the Lancers’ starting job against front runner Ruiz and the rest.

I heard that Ruiz was at the Nike QB camp? How did he do? The fact that he was at the QB Camp says something about where he see’s himself playing next year doesn’t it? He sure wasn’t at the Free Safety Camp, LOL. This is going to be some QB competition at Amat this summer. How is Spring ball coming along? Didn’t spring start this week? Lancer Football Baby!!!!

  • just askin’

an even interesting-er take is how does a guy who apparently has these kind of skills – not get off the bench at South Hills?

  • Lancer Land

    Aram,

Can you please do some research and get some information on why Booth seriously chose to leave South Hills? If and when Ruiz is going to be our starting QB at Bishop Amat next year and South Hills is in need of a starting QB why would he leave which seems to me to be a better situation at South Hills? I’ve heard Booth’s father coached football with Coach Gano at Los Altos so why wouldn’t he transfer to Damien instead or stay at South Hills with Coach Bogan? The entire situation seems peculiar to me and I’m curious why he left the Huskies (Dawgs!) and went to us Lancers? Don’t get me wrong I like the free publicity and healthy competition will just lead to more success for us overall but we want backup QB’s and South Hills probably needs a starting QB. Do you agree with my assessment?

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

    Just askin,

I think Booth did start some at South Hills. Maybe it wasn’t the right place for him. Also, keep in mind that kids improve from year to year.

    Lancer Land,

I honestly believe, and this is just my opinion, that Brock and his pops think he has a legit shot to be the starting QB at Amat. And if he is, what a great way for him to get exposure. Also, maybe Brock will play some and Rio will play some. You never know.

About South Hills — I don’t think the moment you’re referring to is coming. The Huskies have their QB already, so that’s that.

  • smallcity

I’m curious. Is Amat setting this up a la USC? That is, are they prepping Rio for next year? Nothing wrong with that. Just wondering.

  • The Real Story

Booth did coach with Gano along with Rios dad years ago at LA. Booth the father took over the LA freshmen head coaching spot the year before his son attended LA as a freshmen. Booth coached the team his sons freshmen year also. They went 9-1 that year only loss was to Damien, interesting side note the loss was on a blocked extra point by a kid that lives in Hacienda Heights.

At the end of Booths freshmen year Gano and staff told Mark Booth the father that Brook isnt a quarterback and he needs to learn a new position. So Mark took his son, Gutierrez (RB) and Sios (OLM) to South Hills. That move pissed off lots of LA players and parents. The school was so pissed off the administration had Mark Booth arrested at the school on some trumped up charges. They actually filed the charges and went to court, Mark Booth was later found incident of all charges and last I heard was suing the school district.

Why did Booth leave South Hills according to a very reliable source the coaching staff at South Hills saw Booths weaknesses on the field and told the father they didnt expect him to start his senior year at South Hills. South Hills didnt want the distraction next season, knowing Booth would transfer out if they told him.

According to a not as reliable source Gano did offer Booth a spot at Damien, but due to the conflict his freshmen year at LA with Gano Booth choice to team up with Ruiz his old coaching buddy(LA) at Bishop Amat.

Booth does have a big arm, strong kid, and hard working but has lots of down side. Booth will do great in a Clarkson type camp, but when it comes to producing on the field many question marks. Footwork, speed, accuracy and the big one take a hit are Booths weakness.

Even with these weaknesses in the right offense he could be very affective.

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

I kind of feel bad for Brock in terms of the timing. He’s in a situation now where he’s competing with what Time Warner’s Reg Miller called “the best athlete in Valley history” … that’s Ruiz he’s talking about.

  • Booth plus others invited to U100 NUC West Regional Combine

This is not the complete list but Booth is also invited to the NUC Ultimate 100 Combine with these other area players:

    JR Nelson – HH Wilson
    Wallace gonzales – B Amat
    Adam Sanchez – B Amat
    Joseph Prohoroff – HH Wilson
    Taylor Lagace – Arcadia
    Nate Harris – Chino Hills

this does not include the Fresno and San Diego combine invitee’s

  • Aaron

Reginald forgets his history. Glenn Davis is a person that won’t be eclipsed for a long time if ever. Aram I know you don’t forget history like that, all that one needs to see is the Heisman sitting in the lobby of the Administration Building on D Street.

Booth will fit Amat’s offense very well if he wins the spot. I understand Hernandez is their next QB at South Hills but I wouldn’t anoint him yet because of the things I saw when Bonita played them. If they needed him to make plays they would have lost the game. Booth had a lot more experience and should have started that game, and it might not be nearly as close as it was.

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

    Aaron,

Yeah, Glenn Davis will be nearly impossible to dethrone. But Rio could get himself in the conversation IF he is taken as the No. 1 hitter in the MLB draft his year (I’ve heard that’s very possible) and wins a CIF title while quarterbacking the Lancers. Careers like that don’t come along too often.

  • What?

    Aaron,

What are you talking about a lot more experience. Booth started his freshmen year at LA and played the whole season. His sophomore year he was hurt didn’t play a down. His junior year he played one half a game at the varsity level. Where is all this experience you are talking about.

  • Amatian

I still think Ruiz plays QB next year. The only question I have about R.R. is his throw on the run accuracy? I also think that “IF” tyler P can move the offense without getting into trouble by turning the ball over, it leaves the team with more options for coverage in other positions? The season will be here before you know it.

  • WHAT’S BEST FOR THE TEAM

It all boils down to this . What is best for the team. Rio only playing QB and more that likely doing a great job. Or having Booth QB and it seems he is qualified and given the chance will do a good job plus having Rio both on offense and defense. Aram don’t know if you remember him but Randy Tanner was quite a phenom in his own right. One of the best ever to walk the halls of Amat.

  • Aaron

Looking at Maxpreps to job my memory.

Booth started the first two games of the season, won the first game against Ayala although he didn’t do much after that. Granted he wasn’t asked to do much against Ayala. Hernandez started games both in the place of Shirley. The one I saw when Bonita played South Hills he was very unimpressive and obviously they lost to Tesoro.

Obviously Shirley was better than both or at least it looks that way on paper. I haven’t seen Booth play, but I have seen Hernandez, and from the sound of it Booth has improved lot.

  • AMAT FAN

WHAT IS THE STATUS OF LACY. WHEN DID HE GET HOME AND IS HE GOING TO PLAY THIS SEASON?

  • Don’t post if you don’t know.

    Yo what:

Booth was the MVP his sophomore year at South Hills on the Junior Varsity. Didn’t play a down, dump ass.

  • SGV Lancer

Regardless of who becomes QB, I think we all can agree that it’s going to be a very exciting time to be a Bishop Amat Lancer.

I see BA in a complete win/win situation. And what is even more exciting (which no one has mentioned yet) is the fact that RB Jay Anderson will be in the backfield!!!

Jay Anderson averaged 101.9 yards a carry againts some of the top high school football programs in the entire country including a 191 yard game vs. SO Notre Dame and 111 yards vs. Mater Dei. He is already bigger and faster. With a decent line, he will be unstoppable as a Senior.

A RB like Anderson takes LOADS of pressure off whomever becomes BA’s next QB…

    Exciting times indeed!

  • Why should we trust South Hills Coaching???? Are you serious???

“Why did Booth leave South Hills according to a very reliable source the coaching staff at South Hills saw Booths weaknesses on the field and told the father they didnt expect him to start his senior year at South Hills. My Response:

I’m sorry I just don’t get it. South Hills is supposed to have all of these great players. Their coaching staff is supposed to be one of the best as well. But really folks…look at what the South Hills coaching staff has accomplished recently….

This great coaching staff that said that Booth will never be a starter HAS LOST TO DIAMOND RANCH TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!!

Forgive me if I think the South Hills coaching staff is a bit overrated…

  • Cheech

    Aram,

Can you check to see if the rumor of Jay Anderson being kicked off the football team is true. I understand he was kicked off for not attending weight training. Ruiz has been attending.

  • Why?

Cheech if you’re an Amat fan why would you say that? If you’re not how would you know? If you’re spreading rumors, again why?

  • Aaron

I’m not even an Amat fan and I know what that smells like. It is obvious that Jay Anderson was not kicked off the football team because he is playing baseball. I’m quite sure, and this is how it should be, that when kids go to basketball and baseball land or wherever they go to play another sport their football coaches leave them alone.

  • Coach Long

We are excited about A.J. Pule at Hoover High who also advance and is going to Santa Barbara. He’s having a great offseason and looking forward to going down there to compete!

  • Here we go…..

Jay Anderson and his Dad made the decision not to play for the Lancers this year. Life goes on. This only presents an opportunity for the guys standing in line to get P.T. He will be missed but again, it was his choice.

  • Coach Bogun

You’ll see Brock in Sundays soon.

    What were we thinking?

    Damn. Another one got away!

Brock and Vaughns will light up the NFL soon.

I should have just let their Dad’s have their way!

  • Sunday?

Sunday, this kid is a big reach on Saturday’s. Sunday better odds playing the loto.

  • Dirty Skrid

Jay Anderson sighting at a school on Covina Blvd. WOW!

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

That is a rumor I’ve heard in a number of places. Enough to make me make some calls to people who said they also heard the same rumors. However, I don’t buy it. My own gut feeling is that whatever issue there is now between Anderson and Amat football, if there even is an issue, will pass and he’ll be carrying the rock for the Lancers next fall. We also have to remember that Jay is a stud baseball player playing at the baseball hot spot. But this is worth following closely.

  • just wondering

Soo is Jay going to be transfering anywhere??? If so where? and what covina blvd. school are you talking about!!!!

  • Amat hater

Amat cannot win without transfers. Most of the kids that go there live 50 miles away. That kid blue that left was living in mission hills. I wouldn’t be suprised if Rio ruiz lives in Palm Springs.

  • smallcity

I just read up on Clarkson’s camp. I didn’t realize that Booth was going up against such talent. For him to move on in the camp is quite impressive. Any word on how he did?

Jay not playing this next season is going to hurt no doubt. Any idea who the new go to RB is?

  • football fan

I have a question. Didn’t Booth have to change Residence and move to another City. Did he actually move . I thought you have to sit out 1 year.

  • Wolfie

I just spoke with Mr. Anderson and he verified that Jay is no longer a member of the Bishop Amat football team. Could Rio be the next one to give up the gridiron?

  • Good Job Mr Medina

SJB fan…..were did you here this. I was able to watch him when started against Mater Dei and Orange Lu, he looked quite impressive, but for him to advance to the finals at the steveclarkson dream maker camp, AS A SOPHMORE!!!!! WOW…and was at the NIKE combine at USC? wow…..now i really cant wait to see him throw the ball around at bosco…..congrats Mr. Rene Medina. You keep up the good work, and congrats to all the other Clarkson Finalists!! good luck to all, and lets get a local boy in that SUPER 7.

  • Kaptain Kiefer

The Lancers are going to be fine this year. There are alot of kids out there (spring) that look to have a lot of potential and with a few more years in the program they will fill in nicely. Go Big Blue!!!
