No returning QB in the SGV had better numbers last year than Schurr’s Aaron Cantu. But he enters his senior season with his top-two receivers gone and the team’s leading rusher. I think it’s safe to say Schurr’s players had a good chance to be walking around with rings on their fingers if they were in the Mid-Valley Division last year. This year? Well, Schurr has a lot to replace.

Here’s what Spartans coach Ben Negrete said about the search for skill: Right now we have a lot of athletes out there fighting for those positions. But I always withhold judgment until we get into pads. There’s a lot of bodies out here now, but how many end up being football players is debatable.

We have some guys who are ready to step up. I’m not as worried about that as I thought I was going to be. We have several guys waiting in the wings, but I’m not sure we’ll put up the numbers those guys did last year.

Aram’s take: Where do you rank Schurr in the Mid-Valley? Right behind Monrovia and San Dimas? Ahead of them? Somewhere in the area of Arroyo or Whittier Christian? If the Spartans are lighting it up in the nonleague, then you’ll know just how worried SD and M-Town should be.
