Passing tourneys: Huge weekend ahead …

… but first, check out South Hills’ group in the Edison Tournament on Saturday. The Huskies have to get out of the group to advance but it won’t be easy …

South Hills
Mater Dei
SO Notre Dame
La Habra

And now for the BIGGIE on Saturday, the SGV Shootout at Gladstone HS. I believe pool play starts at 9 a.m. and the semis are at 3 p.m. with the championship at 5 p.m.

The field is: Arroyo, Covina, Wilson, Gladstone, El Monte, Los Altos, South El Monte, West Covina, San Dimas, Rowland, Diamond Bar, Baldwin Park, Monrovia, Buena Park, La Puente, Azusa, Whittier Christian, Rosemead.

I believe Saturday there’s also a big tournament at Santa Fe, so somebody get me the info or post it and I’ll get it up here.

  • ND aint what it used to be

Has anyone taking a gander at ND this year? It’s going to be a very long year for the Knights. They might win 3 games this year and will be swept in the Serra.

  • Aaron

Claremont Tournament next Friday, yes Bonita is going.

  • Btw….

I enjoy watching local teams, but that SGV tournament is beyond weak. Please get a hold of that Sante Fe scehdule, I wanna see if I’ll catch some throwarounds, don’t wanna go all the way out to Edison this weekend. Thanks

  • I.E.FAN

Check out the Mission Viejo Lineup. There are some pretty good teams out there this weekend too:

    Capistrano Valley
    El Toro
    Long Beach Poly
    Long Beach Wilson
    Mission Viejo
    Palos Verde
    Peninsula
    Corona Santiago
    Schurr
    Trabuco Hills
    Upland
    Los Osos

  • GIVE US YOUR TAKE

    IE FAN,
If you truely are an IE fan what is your take on Norco . I don’t know if you have seen this poster who goes by norco and a few other choice names but give us your view seeing as you are the only other IE fan I have seen on this blog.

  • !stang!

Muir is in the santa fe and claremont. I don’t know the shedule. Someone please post it ! Asap!

  • I.E.FAN

I don’t follow Norco all that much but will say that Norco is and has been a solid team out in the I.E. Don’t come down too hard on me Mr. Norco I am a baseline fan and a fan of I.E. Football in general. I think we have soime really good teams out this way too. It would be great if some of the SGV teams ventured out a little east to schedule their opponents but I do understand the whole commute thing. That aside we could have some really good games between the two. REV JW North CC Norco Upland OSOS and RC are all worthy opponents. To answer your question, Norco is a good team always has been in the mix and always puts up a good battle. More of a good running team though. Even our Norco poster will agree that they throw more to upen up the run game than rack up passing stats. Pass the word along to the SGV coaches, the I.E. is an untapped oil field of talent and some great games await, if you want to make the trip.

  • Matt

St. Francis has one this Friday. Anyone know who is in it?

  • More fishbowl stuff

Can’t we get stuff about teams outside the Fishbowl? The lead comment is about a fishbowl team in an OC tournament but hardly a mention of La Habra?

Then we get comments about a Fishbowl tournament with a bunch of weak teams instead of the Santa Fe tournament. I thought this blog was to cover all the areas covered by all 3 papers.

  • The guru

Yes the SGV shootout and nothing to see this year i would say Arroyo and Covina in the finals but without Billy Livingston How is Covina going to do??? hmm.. maybe something to check out see how Covina Does without there QB.. Well ill see everyone there..

  • Don

You know Aram, I’ve come to really appreciate the unvarnished truth in that fishbowl argument thing. Covering a measly hundred schools or so just don’t get it and as a matter of fact, those guys looking for more attention for their favorites in La Habra and Norco haven’t taken it far enough. You guys have already expanded the area to include the Chino Valley and the Del Rio League, why not open it up all the way?

Where’s the love for West Monroe? And Gorman. And how about TEXAS? Gaines back at Permian, can Abilene do it again in 2010, and just how does Trinity end up with all of those Hawaiian and Samoan players every year? One day they’re out paddling around the Pacific and somehow end up midway between Ft. Worth and Dallas the next? You could make a three part series out of that one.

And when are you going to run something on De La Salle? Yeah, yeah, I know, the last time you tried to cover one of their games you ended up out on Colorado Boulevard with Melendez eating carne asada. Wrong school dude. I want to know about how Ladouceur gets all into the finals every year with all those skinny white kids; and what’s up with the sweater vests?

And while you’re at it, tell Robledo if he wants to try and steal your football thunder he’ll have to do better than all of those top ten lists. Lazy. Did the Trib stop paying you guys mileage or what?

  • Aaron

Maybe it’s me…but I have yet to see any people for the SGVN prowling the sidelines during the summer passing circuit.

Bonita has Upland, Schurr, Ganesha and another today…that’s my latest info. 4:30, be there or square. Could you tell Fred to stop making lists…it looks bad.

  • The Stang Fan

    Don,

    Excellent post.

” One day they’re out paddling around the Pacific and somehow end up midway between Ft. Worth and Dallas the next?”

    LMFAO!!!!

  • WHY ALL THE LISTS ?

The reason for all the lists is simply a theory of putting bait on the hook. First replies are usually of the why isn’t so and so on the list or why is this school under that other school. From there it becomes a slugfest of name calling and then the drive by haters become involved and then the thread topic is thrown out the window and the next thing you know 50 plus hits. Just look at any thread thread related to a list and you will see exactly what I mean. Plus it is the easiest way to generate hits without really much effort.

  • Don

    Thanks Stang.

We never did make it Hawkins, huh? Too late now. Had to take the kid to BBQ after a game up at Brookside a couple weeks ago. One of the guys said no more Turkey legs.

    Bummer

  • What the hell you talking about Don?

    Don:

Pull your lips off Aram’s butt long enough to read and realize all we are asking for is for coverage for teams outside the Fishbowl. Yeah, there might be a ton of teams to cover but it states this is a blog for the SGVN, PSN and the WDN.

So cover the schools in the circulation area.

Your comments about all those other schools…..that was just plain stupid.

  • Will See

    guru,

Arroyo and Covina, are you talking football?

We have played over half these team already in passing league. First off how can anyone pick covina over west covina. Then your other pick is Arroyo, I will explain their major issue this year, very good quarterback with no good receivers. At the end of the real season this quarterback is going to have good numbers where as if he was on a quality team he would have great numbers.

Personally I thing a few teams are going to surprise you tomorrow. Don’t forget this is 7on7, big difference from real football. I’m not going to make any predictions other than that.

  • Aaron

You don’t see the point. Don’s making a joke…because no one has seen these guys actually doing their job since spring sports ended. I’m being serious. I mean you know something is wrong when Fred is not at Amat or Damien.

Bonita for the most part of the summer has passed two days a week, every Thursdsy at Gluenn Davis and at Damien on Wednesdays. No Fred, No Aram…but what I do get from them is lists. Also the Air Assault, day two, plenty of out of the area teams and they wouldn’t have even had to leave the stadium with two games going on at a time.

Aram, you’re a Football Junkie right? Claremont has a two day passing tournament next weekend starting at eight am on both Friday and Saturday.

  • 7 on 7 outside the Fishbowl

Santa Fe High School hosts football passing tournament on Saturday

The area’s largest, most publicized football passing tournament returns Saturday to Santa Fe High School.

The 10th annual Tournament of Champions and Young Guns Passing Tournament features more than 30 schools and includes several events and competitions.

California, Pioneer, Santa Fe and Whittier are among the local entrants, along with notables such as Crespi, John Muir, Lakewood, Loyola, Paraclete, San Clemente, Santa Margarita, Serra and St. John Bosco. There’s even one out-of-state participant – Olympus High of Salt Lake City.

Competition starts at 9 a.m. and is broken up between lineman and skill players.

Lineman have six morning events beginning with the bench press, which is open to seven players from each team.

There are also weightlifting competitions afterward including the power clean lift, 10-man jump rope, sled drive, obstacle course and short shuttle (pro agility). There are four additional contests in the afternoon capped by the classic seven-man tug of war.

    Dear What the Hell,

This isn’t Brian is it? Why didn’t you just say so? If you read these blogs you must know I’ve been pimping LHHS football since the before the Dato kids played. Great program, great coach, great history, your own pipeline to Saturday football for kids who don’t like school and yes, a great quarterback coming back. 29 TD’s, over 2000 yards, D1 guys on the phone every day and and Frank to keep his head on straight. What more could a guy ask?

More, more, more. Right? You want Campa and Tolegian here to pluck one Orange County school from one Orange County league that plays in an ALL ORANGE COUNTY DIVISION out of all of the rest and give ‘em some attention because what? They sell the WDN at the 7-11 on Beach Blvd?

Sorry, makes no sense. Better to check these for your Highlander fix, it’s what I do:

    Aaron,

I appreciate your kind words, but did you ever stop and think that we might be working on something else? We have a very tight deadline for our football preview magazine and right now that is the priority with only three people responsible for providing all of the content.

  • Dee

Arroyo and Covina in the finals? I think Will See was right, theres going to be big surprises out there tomorrow…I would bet my sports car that Covina will not be on top(if I had one!)…with or without Billy. I have seen Arroyo and they have a better chance. But keep your eyes open and be ready for some fun football. Remember all these teams have members that are friends have played together in Jr All American or middle school…this may be there only chance to play against each other so theres alot to prove! From the teams I have seen it wont be La Puente, El Monte, Gladstone, Wilson or Diamond Bar in finals.

  • Aaron

Aram, I like your work, but the lists were a yawn before they were published. I know you’re working on the preview, and that is a big piece to get done. However, wouldn’t it make more sense to go out to practice: observe, take notes, take photos, and chat with the coaches on their turf. How much are you going to really know about a team unless you go out and watch them?

Like the comments on the top ten Fred posted. If anything
some of those sentences made cases for why those teams shouldn’t be close to that.

I’m just trying to put this in perspective: there’s you, Fred, and Steve. So if you make some calls and find out the practice schedules you could see nine teams a week starting back in June. And if I have it right, there’s about 60 schools in the Tribune Coverage area. Certain places you can hit more schools in a day like your backyard of West Covina.

In the day where the only reason people buy the Tribune is to read local sports and local news there’s too much LeBron and not enough Bassett.

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

    Aaron,

What lists are you talking about? I have one up — about the Zero Week games. That’s it. The rest is news. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. These blogs can be used for anything and they are.

I prefer to delve into practices and the news that comes out of them once the pads come in. Fortunately, Fred and I will have plenty of time for that once we’re done with the preview.

This is no small piece of work. And although you and others may not understand this side of things, we are a business. We don’t work for In-N-Out coupons and pats on the back. Nor does our advertising department. We have a duty to the advertisers who spend their hard-earned cash to buy space in our preview magazine or daily paper. So our main focus is making sure the content and display hold up their end of the bargain. If that means missing a three-way somewhere, then so be it.

  • What the hell you talking about Don?

Don…..where did I say I wanted more LH coverage? All I want is some coverage of teams outside the fishbowl. Teams that fall in the circulation area of not only the SGVN but the PSN and the WDN.

St. Francis, the Pasadena schools, La Mirada, Schurr…just name a few.

Campa gives plenty of press to LH….that isn’t the issue. It is the focus of this blog on teams in the SGVN area of circulation when the blog states otherwise.

I can only read so many stories on Amat and CO. Besides I think Fred has got that covered.

  • AMAT 73

    Aram,
I saw in your post to Aaron you said you guys are working on the prwiew magazine. If you are not out looking at the coverage area teams by going to practices or passing league games what are you basing your previews of each team. Will it be on what they did last season or what tidbits are dropped on the blogs. I am not knocking you at all but to preview something don’t you have to view it first. A good example is on a few threads you guys put up it is being mentioned how losing JA will be a big factor to us and yes it will but in reality when was the last time we were hurting at the RB position . It has been mentioned many times that we are in capable hands with Moore and Shay and maybe a few other hidden gems but have yet to see anything from you guys on that point. Just asking if visiting teams is in the plan to get a feel for the teams. Like I stated earlier I am in no way knocking you guys just curious on what the criteria is for the preview of teams.

  • Aaron

That’s right, you’ve got one list here. But you have another that Fred posted on his blog, and Fred has two lists of his own.

If you can keep quality high and get a product out just by going to practice during fall camp in those two weeks and not doing so now that’s cool.

I must be thinking of another time. Yet with shrinking subscriptions and less local news…the ads dry up. I honestly don’t care if the four way you cover is at Glenn Davis, Damien, Kiefer, CO, SD, Arroyo. You’re the football guy so this is your niche and if you attack it there could be three articles a week on summer football. You would also be getting all of the information you need to make that preview as good as something people buy previewing college football or the NFL.

And if you want to know I have a subscription to the SGV Tribune along with the Daily Bulletin. So I am a paying customer, you know what was on the front page of the Bulleting today? An article about La Verne being rated a top 10 community to live in by Family Circle Magazine…they have five million subscribers…I didn’t know they existed until last week. I’m also surprised that we’re on the Bulletin’s radar since we’re in the dead zone out here at the sheer end of the ESGV.

    Dear WTHAYTAD,

It would be nice to see more schools covered but I don’t see it happening without correspondents. The Mid Valley guys really do a better job as far as depth of coverage goes. Often to a fault. That said, I am in total agreement with Aaron that the all day passing events would have been a great way for the Trib guys to spend a few minutes with a lot of coaches from within the coverage area. Between events, the staffs are usually very accessible to anyone who happens by.

+1 On St. Francis; as far as that goes, I’d like to see more general coverage of the whole Mission League particularly Cathedral and St. Paul, (although SP usually gets plenty of ink). Same with the Pasadena schools, especially Muir. I am amazed at the quality of athletes coming out of Pasadena/Altadena area year in and out despite the hardship some of those kids face just getting to school and playing sports.

La Mirada had a great season last year, finally. I would, if nothing else, like to hear the whole story about the Coaching changes. Bad news is their league plays too far west to generate much interest north of the 5 fwy. The SGV league presents a similar problem with Downey and Norwalk in our patch and the rest of the league west of the 91. I think the CIF big shots were a little off their game with that realignment.

Schurr surely shouldn’t suffer from a scarcity of strokes, simply sad. They’ve done well for years and should be given the same attention afforded any of the top teams in the local leagues. One thing for sure is the Almont will do a lot better in the Md-Valley than if they had remained in the Southeast.

  • What the hell you talking about Don?

    Don:

Agree completely with each of your points. You are right, a scarcity of correspondents doesn’t help, but a few minutes spent at these passing tournaments could provide a wealth of info.

    See…..I can be reasonable. LOL!

  • WTF

Heard Zavala from Wilson acted like a fool again at tournament today. What is it with Wilson and head coaches??
