Bonita’s Pendleton, Spathias to split time; Horine likely done for year …

Bonita WR/LB Casey Horine is likely done for the year

Bonita High School quarterback Garrett Pendleton will play this week against Diamond Bar, but it’s still unknown whether the senior will start or come off the bench for Greg Spathias.

Bearcats coach Eric Podley said Pendleton is still rusty and Spathias, his replacement for the past five weeks, isn’t going away quietly after leading the team to a 4-0 record.

“The competition is still on,” Podley said. “Garrett is still working a little bit of the rust off. We’re going day by day in practice, but coming back from four weeks off isn’t as easy as one might think.”

The news isn’t good on the team’s top receiver, Casey Horine. Podley said Horine is likely done for the year with a knee injury he suffered against Claremont on Sept. 10. Horine is set to have his knee scoped at the end of the month, and while the team is hoping for a mircale, nobody’s holding their breath.

“We’re extremely disappointed, mostly for the kid,” Podley said. “The two games he played in, he did great and you could see the potential he has. He worked hard and was poised to have a really good season. We can’t duplicate his speed or senior leadership.”

  • Wow coach!

Coach Podley needs to pick one qb not two. it hardly ever works by platooning two guys. all it does is divide the team. Six years ago Chavez and Gold split time at qb and it divided the players as to who they wnted in the game. garett was CLEARLY the number one qb before he got hurt so that should not have changed a thing. Bonita has a very good team this year and this could change things. I am baffled and very suprised. WOW!

  • Bonita

wow shows the type of loyalty the coaches have towards Pendleton he was your number 1 and should still be your number 1
get it together before you guys ruin the team

  • Corona Centennial Parent

Where is Bonita located and who are they?

  • Aaron

    Everyone calm down!

Centennial Parent: Bonita is the Alma Mater of Glenn Davis. It is located on D Street in La Verne and the Bearcats play in the Southeast Division. For the division they play in they are a solid program.

These players have been very resilient and will continue to be. I remember the time being split between Gold and Chavez, it was not a happy time for that small minute moment, yet the truth is Curtis Gold and Jeff Chavez were friends long before they got to Bonita and still are friends.

Garrett will be fine and the Bearcats will continue the season and it will continue to be a great one.

  • Baseball Fan

Glenn Davis was my favorite baseball player in the 80s. I loved the Houston Astros. Those were some great teams: Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, Billy Hatcher, Kevin Bass, Jose Cruz. I really thought that they were finally going to win it all in 1986, but alas, the Mets and that damn Lenny Dykstra put an end to that dream for Glenn and the boys.

I didn’t know he went to Bonita. That’s really cool.

  • Basketball Fan

Glenn Davis a baseball player??? I thought Glenn Davis was a basketball player. Glenn “Big Baby” Davis from LSU and now with the Celtics. Its so confusing……………Who is this football dood?

  • game time

tough one for Podley, sub is 4-0 and big kid is untested, started some last year, so, so, no action as soph, not a starter as frosh. He is big and a ton of potential, hard worker from what is said, might not be the same without the big time reciever, that is a huge loss. Hopefully he is good for basketball, same for big QB as they and others make a great bball team. That-bball is later, right now undefeated with 2 QBs who can play, both are seniors too?

  • Aaron

Pendleton was the starter on the frosh squad. He started seven games last season, yes with so so results but he proved he could lead and solidified the job then.

As a soph…well Terry Paredez didn’t give any of his backups a chance to play with how well he did. Spathias results last year in limited time were less than stellar, notice that when they had issues Podley asked his consummate team player in Evan Highley to go under center and not Spathias who was the backup.

This is not a fun problem to have, Spathias did his job and he got them to 4-0, Pendleton far and away earned the job and as the season progresses we’ll see why he was the unquestioned starter going into the fall before injury.

  • to coach aaron

not that it matters GP was a tight end as a frosh, did not play qb till starter brokearm, then split time when he returned, of course on TP and EH, none of this matters, what does is the build up on GP,sounds like the next Carson Palmer, let him play without the expectations, he did work his ass off, enjoy it and the results will do the talkin, he is just a hs kid.

  • whodat

    Aaron,

Stop throwing yourself under the BUS!!

  • Let me correct you

First of all, garret never played tight end as a frosh. Second, he started most of the frosh games and when he didnt northrop started. They both played qb every game until james got hurt. But what does that matter. the question is who should start? And to say that GP is not tested is a joke. how about south hills in the playoffs? how many quality throws did he make? the only question is if he is healthy enough to step in now or does he still need some time.

  • ENOUGH

    Aaron,
As it is said on Amat about living in the past I think you should lay low on the Glenn Davis line. That is ancient history as you can see by the jokes. At least come up with something new such as winning the smugepot recently or the rodeo coming to town .

  • WHAT?????

How does a WR play LB also. Its one of those positions that its either or.
