CIF responds to Mater Dei lawsuit … calls Monarchs’ course of action “baffling” …

Here’s the statement just put out by CIF-Southern Section … in response to Mater Dei suing over transfer rulings

LOS ALAMITOS — The CIF Southern Section offi ce expresses its disappointment at the fiing of a lawsuit by the Diocese of Orange contending unfair treatment of Mater Dei High School.

“Mater Dei has been a long standing member of CIF-Southern Section and is clearly aware of our policies,” stated CIF Southern Section Commissioner Dr. Jim Staunton. “If Mater Dei had concerns about eligibility decisions, they had several channels of communication to express those concerns. Why they did not exercise their options as members is baffling.”

The Section maintains open lines of communication with all member schools including Mater Dei High School yet this lawsuit is the fi rst indication of any dissatisfaction of the application of the rules.

During the history of the organization including the sixty years Mater Dei High School has been a member of CIF-Southern Section, the rules have been enforced and applied without prejudice or malice against any of its members.

The Section is confused that one of the most successful school athletic programs in the Section would make a claim of disproportionate treatment by the organization.

The Office is available to hear any complaints or allegations, as is the Southern Section Executive Committee, yet the Diocese of Orange has filed this suit without prior communication to the Southern Section Office.

“While the CIF-SS never wishes to be involved in litigation with one of our member schools, we look forward to demonstrating the fair and equal application of our rules on behalf of all our membership,” added Staunton.

All of this will likely lead to the courts eventually forcing CIF to allow student-athletes and their parents to be able to pick and choose whichever school they would like to attend, so long as the school district/private school allows the kid to attend school there. Just like it was in the early 2000′s…but for good.

Baffling? What’s baffling? It would have taken them months to get an appeal through the CIF and what if it had been denied? They’re cutting to the chase by filing this suit.

CIF denying Mater Dei’s out of state transfer was the straw that broke that camel’s back. Whether you agree or disagree with “athletic” transfers, one thing is for sure, you’d be hard pressed to disagree with Mater Dei on this one.

Moreover, Inconsistent rule equals inconsistent ruling.

  • It’s about time

This should have never taken this long to happen. With all the “crazy” transfers, some legit some motivated CIF has done a very poor job of demonstrating just how this rule works. Finally someone has called their bluff and I hope they will have to show just cause for each and every transfer (when the rule went into effect) that they excepted or denied. This is a huge can of worms that CIF is going to have to sit down at the table, open up and take a big bite out of…..Mater Dei is a perennial power house program year in and year out. with 60 years of committment to CIF. For them to file this, you know they have done their homework, besides, do you think CIF really wants to go up against the Diocese of Orange? Oh man, the flood gates are just about to be blown wide open…

  • Way to Go Mater Dei

It’s about time someone has called CIF’s bluff. Their decisions are a joke.

The Canada brothers and Wallace Gonzales are ineligible for a year.

Brock Booth is ruled ineligible and then made eligible after a state appeal.

Randal Varella, and Gilchrist are eligible even though they “moved” to schools less than 5 miles away.

These are the examples in our little fish bowl. I can only imagine how many other arbitrary and inconsistent decisions elsewhere.

Kick CIF’s butt and end this mess!!!

ARAM MUST HAVE READ MY POST FROM A FEW MONTH’S AGO, THE CIF IS NOT A BUSINESS PER SAY IT IS LIKE THE SHERIFFS DEPT, IT DOES NOT MAKE THE RULES IT ONLY INFORCES THE LAWS SET FORTH BY MEMBER SCHOOLS.

IT IS ACTING AS A POLICE FORCE THAT NOT ONLY ARREST BUT ALSO HANDLES THE COURT PROCEEDINGS AS IF THEY WERE JUDGE JURY AND EXOCUTIONER.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT MATER DEI NEEDS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GOVERNING BOARD COMPRISED OF MOSTLY SCHOOLS WITH SUCCESSFUL SPORT PROGRAMS.

THE DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS AND GOALS FOR A SCHOOL LIKE BISHOP AMAT OR MATER DAI ARE VERY DIFFERENT THAN A SCHOOL LIKE BASSETT OR WILSON OR LETS SAY WORKMAN. IF WORKMAN HAS A HORRIBLE TEAM OR LOOSING PROGRAMS THE SCHOOL STILL RECIEVES ITS STATE MANDATED FUNDS, BUT IF MATER DAI HAS HORRIBLE SPORTS PROGRAMS THE PAYING CUSTOMERS WILL GO ELSE WHERE.

I BELIEVE THIS TYPE OF SYSTEM IS IN THE WORKS, I REALLY BELIEVE THE SUCCESSFUL SCHOOLS ARE TIRED OF BEING OUT VOTED BY THE SCHOOLS WHO DONT CARE ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE OF ITS SPORT PROGRAMS.

I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW SOME OF THESE PEOPLE LIVE WITH THEMSELVES, AFTER SCREWING SOME KID OUT OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL FUN, BUT THERES A DARK PLACE WAITING FOR PEOPLE LIKE THESE, I DONT CARE WHAT THEY GET PAID, SCREWING KIDS ISNT WORTH IT.

REALLY HOW DO THE PEOPLE WHO SCREWED THE CANADA BOYS FEEL AT NIGHT.

THESE ELITE SCHOOLS WHO REALLY CARE ABOUT SPORTS AND FOOTBALL SHOULD FORM THIER OWN GOVERNING BOARD AND LEAVE THE CIF TO HANDLE THE KEPPELS, BASSETT’S AND WORKMAN’S, BLAIRS AND THE REST OF THE SCHOOLS WHERE PERFORMANCE ISNT IMPORTANT.

THEN DR WHATEVER WHO RUNS THESE KANGARO COURTS OR HEARINGS CAN SCREW PEOPLE OUT OF THIER SENIOR SEASONS AND NO ONE WILL GIVE A RATS A%$.

THE ONLY HONEST SOLUTION IS TO ALLOW ANYONE TO GO WHERE THEY WANT, FOR WHATEVER REASON ITS THIER LIFE AND THIER MONEY AND THIER BUSINESS, WHY SHOULD I OR ANYONE ELSE CARE WHERE A PERSON SENDS THIER KID TO SCHOOL AND WHAT BUSINESS IT IS OF MINE OR ANYONE ELSE’S TO SAY WHERE OR WHY A KID MOVES SCHOOLS.

I am so glad to see CIF clamp down on Mater Dei Next, I would like to see the CIF forbid the school recruit players from South Central for their basketball program. Mater Dei has the same mentality as USC; we all know what happened to that program.
I recall two players from the Valley, who wanted to transfer to Layola High School. They were told, ‘you do not have the grades’! They tried St. Francis and then Bishop Amat; same respond. They contacted Mater Dei, guess who got in!!

  • COChargerfan

Folks, I doubt that this lawsuit is going to bring about any meaningful changes in how CIF operates because it is likely that MD is just seeking to overturn the inelgibility decisions for specific athletes that are currently enrolled at MD as opposed to arguing that the whole system is corrupt and, therefore, should be scrapped. At best, the court could issue guidelines that the CIF must follow but that’s even unlikely because I’ve read prior court decisions that challenged the system and CIF won…the courts have acknowledged that they have broad powers granted by law to make the rules that regulate high school sports.

And leaving CIF is not much of an option because that means that you can’t scrimmage or play against any CIF member school unless the CIF gives an exemption.

im riding with mater dei on this one c.i.f is full of crap anyone that transfers to oak christian from out of state or from up north is cleared immediately and come on were not gong to start on how those boys from charter oak bishop amat and etc…. were cleared to play dont make any sense i think if a child is athletically motivated let him go where he/she is pleased i see in basketball c.i.f doesnt care. and coaches should stop all the dang complaining because a child doesnt want to play for them anymore….

  • the critic

mr.magoo i kind of agree with u if this was a few years back but now im so use to schools coming to pasadena pop warner games and inviting them on tours to there school to steal all of our players private schools recruiting such as alemany and st.francis go check their rosters out and see how many players are from pasadena recruiting is here and alive even public schools recruit check out charter oak south hills monrovia and even muir its here man and its not going to stop…..but all of a sudden now people want to speak on illegal recruiting and who c.i.f chooses to let play they should had stopped recruiting years ago and get legit address check like how long have u lived in this city or where did u come from and if they havent been there long enough they shouldnt be allowed to play that’ll make a big difference and stop some of the recruiting…

  • THEENDISNEAR

    Theendisnear,
I do not know what your Parents think of High School, I entered High School to receive an education; not to play sports! Since athetlic sports were offered, I participated in some. I do not care to brag about my accomplishments! Unless someone corrects me,all Catholic schools are College Prepatory oriented. One chooses a certan school, to prepair for higher education! Not to play football, basketball etc. I hope you follow me! In the case of Mater Dei, some funny things take place:
When a water polo athlete transfer from a well established water polo program to Mater Dei, one has the inclanation, Why! If a basketball player living in Landcaster decides to play basketball for Mater Dei, something funny is taking place. When a basketball coach; say for example from Brea Olinda,an established successful program, decides to leave and coach a girls basketball team at Mater Dei, something funny is taking place! When gifted basketball players from Los Angeles County decide to play in a distant county, say for example Orange County, something funny is taking place! How you may ask! Do these tranfers student parents up root themselves and move to Santa Ana and find employment? Now, you are not going to say; that students commute every day from Florence or Jefferson in South Central all the way to Orange County. I do not think so. The question in mind, where do they stay; and who makes the arrangements! Something funny is going on!One last statement, what does a girls basketball coach hear, to decide to switch flags? In other words, ‘What kind of an offer did he receive that he could not resist’? I think I heard this somewhere! Are distant players living elswhere, told about the mini Staples Center they will play in; sponserd by Niki and participate in tournaments in different parts of the nation, before the are drafted by the NBA! Sorry fellows, only 3% ever make the grade. You do agree with me after all. In your hypothetical situation, if someone has the chance to leave a place to receive an EDUCATION and part take in sports. Do you know what Mater Dei means in Latin? If you do not have a clue, I will not insult your intelligence! Mater Dei means_____ Mother of God!

  • MD Pride.

    @ Mr. Magoo.

Mater Dei takes pride in their sports programs, and though there may be some misunderstandings and accusations, it still stands that Mater Dei athletes are some of the best you can find in a high school. Our programs are rigorous and attract many students; regardless of distance and situation.
High school is a place to learn, I do agree. Are you saying that we need not make friends, avoid joining clubs, refuse to take up all the other opportunities that a high school offers, and make the goal of academic achievement the only thing that matters in the selection of a high school?
For some, and many at Mater Dei, sports are a driving force. It compels them to excel in academics, their sport is what they want to do, what they want to be. Excellent students can be excellent athletes, and in fact, many are. There are the typical jocks who fail classes, but they also do not excel in their sports. That’s just lack of effort, and personal problems. What about those who achieve 4.4s and play on Varsity? The well-rounded and the accomplished? Many student athletes travel far distances to get to school every day. Regardless if they will “make” the NBA, NFL, etc., these students, my friends!, are always trying; it’s people who love their sport and those who have a chance to show it that make it. That, is the 3%. They constantly put in effort to be a part of their team, to achieve what they want, where they want it.
Is choosing Mater Dei for its sports a criminal act? Is pursuing what one wants, something that should be denied? The sports programs at Mater Dei represent only one aspect of my school. I chose MD for its religious program, for there are no Catholic high schools closer to me. I do not live in Santa Ana, and wake up and hour and a half before school starts in order to just make the bell. Do you find wrong in my actions? It’s my school that you are speaking against, the sports of my school, my reputation, and my fellow students. You speak against me. If you think that Mater Dei athletes completely disregard their education as students, and that the parents of my friends are making the wrong choice, If you think that your reason is better than theirs, that your values should be those of everyone else’s, and that you are right in all you say. Tell me I’m wrong. Because I know my school is more than some gym for foreigners. Mater Dei is a family. And I don’t tolerate people insulting my family.
