Should Arroyo have intentionally lost to Mountain View? … If it did, it probably avoids San Dimas in the first round … What’s more important: Playoffs or league titles?

Knights coach Jimmy Singiser said he’d never consider, but had Arroyo taken a powder on Friday night and intentionally lost to Mountain View, the Knights would be co-league champs and would have avoided drawing San Dimas in the first round of the Mid-Valley Division playoffs.

I know it sounds wild, and some of you may think I’m crazy, but people don’t forget CIF champs. Nor do they forget CIF finalists. But they do forget league titles, unless they actually played on the team.

I’m just sayin’ … Rosemead finished second in the Mission Valley League and drew a home game against Temple City, which Panthers AND Knights had both already beaten this season.

Something to think about …

Singiser after the draw: To be the best, you have to beat the best. Might as well start with them. Everybody can look at it, figure it out and see the way things went. At some point we’re going to have to get through tough teams. You get who you get. It would be nice to be rewarded for being 9-1 instead of having to prove we deserve to be 9-1.

What does it say about you when you intentionally lose a game just to avoid a team? Come on! And how do you explain that to your players and fans???

  • Goldenarm

    Temple City is likely screwed.

It is tough to beat the same team twice, and if you
forget the score, TC beat Rosemead soundly, and the Panthers know it. Fregoso was not a factor – the Rams
took him out of the game and the officials did the rest, calling back 3 TC touchdowns….yes 3. They also
handed the Mead several horrible calls along the way,
in easily the worst officiated game of the season.

Koffler and crew will not stand for another Friday
like that and TC won’t be overlooked this time, despite their poor record and coming off a low effort loss to So Pas.

Somebody on TC is going to have to set an example and block somebody.

You say to them “Isn’t this practicing on Thanksgiving stuff fun?”

    I know it’s crazy … but just a thought.

Coach Singiser seems to have the attitude of most successful coaches: Bring them on. Of course no team should ever lose intentionally. Only one team out of 16 in each bracket will end its season with a victory. Bring your ‘A’ game every time. Beating a lighter team in round one just to lose in round 2 doesn’t distract from your co-league championship and act of cowardice from forfeiting to avoid competition in Round 1.

Win and lose with pride, dignity and class.

  • Aram’s a fool

    Aram,

Was “Idiotic 101″ a required class at PCC? It is alarmingly obvious that you did not participate at any level as an athlete. If you did, you would know that the fundamental characteristic of a competitor (and thereby a champion) is the drive to compete and win not accumulate the most impressive resume so that someone else would be more impressed. True competitors and champions do not lose to anyone at anything that they have worked for. How do you propose a High School coach “intentionally lose” a football game and even hope to retain his integrity much less the respect and admiration of his team? To be champion you have to “win ‘em all” without regard to a strategic draw or reliance on someone to beat someone else you don’t think you can. Anything less and you simply are a dead man walking and might as well not even lace up those cleats…

Also, this is not 1995 when undefeated Arroyo had a first round bye and then hosted eventual champion UPLAND in the second round. San Dimas is the defending champ and for many reasons should be considered the favorite in the playoffs until beaten. BUT, they are certainly not a giant in these brackets. The CIF did a great job of comprising a bracket of parity. A couple first round matchups will be lopsided but not to the extent of years past.

    Goldenarm,
Though I love your enthusiasm for your team, I think your perception of the game is a bit blurry! Yes, the officiating was horrible for both teams, but to say that TC beat Rosemead soundly is ridiculous! Rosemead was outplayed for a half, but made adjustments and won the game! Not sure if your coaches made any adjustments, and just thought the Panthers were going to lay down. It should be fun! Good luck!

  • CIF

I believe Aram’s view, and that of many, is that a system that everyone can see rewards teams for finishing 2nd and (in fact) punishes some for finishing 1st is flawed. Clearly no one would argue you would rather play an unranked team you beat by 35 (Temple City) over playing a team that is ranked #7 in the division. Does anyone believe that San Dimas is an easier draw than a 3rd place La Canada team that was shutout earlier this season by Arroyo and is given to #4 Covina? I undertsand that CIF has their guidelines and structure to determine brackets. It is a fact that if Arroyo had lost a league game they would have got a much easier draw. Aram is correct. He is just pointing out the obvious and the hypocrisy of the situation. Debating whether or not Arroyo deserves the #3 seed is another argument… but if you are going to give it to them then the draw should reflect it. Like last year Arroyo was a #4 seed and got Whittier Christian. While BP wasn’t seeded and got Gladstone. For whatever its worth I believe the 4 seeds should have been: Covina, Monrovia, Whittier Christian & Azusa. Either way good luck Knights and congrats on your 2nd straight MVL championship!!!.

Idk. Coach Singiser seems baffled. He should be happy to face San Dimas, the defending champs, this will prove they’re the real deal as far as chemistry as a team. This will prove difficult. Coach Z knows what it takes. Hopefully Arroyo’s speed will enlighten the playoffs, but I doubt it.

  • YIKES

There is going to be Olympic league teams rolling through the upper bracket. Azusa will lose to Village and I see Covina losing to Whittier…. I could be wrong- but Friday will tell all!
How is it that Rosemead and T.C. are playing each other? I thought that since they already met and are in the same league, they are not suppose to play one another in the 1st round????

  • Colt74

    Yikes,
TCity and Rosemead are not in the same league.

  • COVINA76

COVINA MADE IT TO THE SIMIFINALS IN THE SAME DIV. AS OAKS CHRISTIAN A FEW YEARS AGO BEFORE LOSING TO OAK PARK IN DOUBLE OVERTIME,MAN THAT WAS A TOUGH DIVISION,THE PREVIOUS YEAR THEY LOST A CLOSE ONE TO TESORO WHICH WAS THE DEFENDING CIF CHAMPS.THEY ARE NOW IN THE PAC -5.THE COLTS HAVE BEEN THERE ,DONT FORGET THE 95 CIF GAME AGAINST LOMPOC AT DISTRICT FIELD,THEY ARE DUE.WE ARE GOING TO BRING A TITLE BACK TO COVINA.AZUSA GOT US THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.NOT THIS TIME.GO COLTS!!!!!

WAY TO GO COACH THOMAS,HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE WEEK!!!YOU DESERVE IT !!!
