Dangerous Podley gives clue as to where Bonita will attack … “They (La Serna) do an excellent job versus the run, but we’ll be interested in testing those back four.” …

Advancing to the championship game of the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs appears to be a pretty simple proposition for the Bonita High School football team, according to its coach, Eric Podley.

The Bearcats (11-1) will have to play near-perfect football against La Serna (11-1) on Saturday night because the Lancers simply don’t give anything away. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Bonita.

“They’re a very solid, disciplined team and they don’t make mistakes,” Podley said of La Serna.

“They don’t commit a lot of penalties.”

La Serna has put itself on the brink of a berth in the final game because it doesn’t give much away and plays a physical brand of football that relies on the running game. The Lancers have three backs who have rushed for more than 500 yards, led by Richard Alvarez’s 1,015 yards and 25 touchdowns.

What fans might see is a complete contrast in styles on Saturday, given how Bonita likes to spread the ball around with its passing game, but Podley warned on Wednesday doubting the Lancers’ passing game could be fatal.

“I think they’re comfortable throwing the ball,” Podley said.

“They’re not afraid to put it up. Forcing them to throw isn’t going to make them uncomfortable.

“Putting them behind in the game, that might (make them uncomfortable). That makes any of us uncomfortable.”

Even Podley, though, admitted it’s unlikely La Serna has seen a passing attack like Bonita’s.

The Bearcats have thrived through the air this season, whether it was backup Greg Spathias under center or starter Garrett Pendleton, who missed the first four games of the season with an elbow injury.

Pendleton has been on fire since his return in throwing for 1,616 yards and 20 touchdowns in eight games.

“I think they haven’t seen a team that throws as much as we do,” Podley said.

“That will be an interesting matchup – our passing game versus their pass defense. They do an excellent job versus the run, but we’ll be interested in testing those back four.”

In addition to Pendleton, the Bearcats have gotten a huge contribution in the running game from Giomani Johnson. Last week, the senior ran for 99 yards and scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to help the Bearcats hold off Muir.

“Johnson single-handedly took over that game,” Podley said.

“He just plays hard, and when things get tough, he plays even harder. You need a guy to step up and lead in those situations, and he’s been that guy.

“Pendleton, also. When we’ve needed big plays, he has stepped up and been able to deliver. I think our kids have confidence in those two players.”

Bonita has won five consecutive games since a loss to West Covina on Oct. 29. In that span, nobody has been closer than 24 points to Bonita at the final gun.

“Right now, we have our hands full worrying about La Serna,” Podley said.

“That’s where all our concentration is at this point. We know we’re in for one heckuva game with those guys.”

    Bonita’s coach is right in that this is going to be a very tough game for both schools. In fact, if ever there was a high school marquee game worthy of television coverage, this should certainly be one of them. Although all the talk has been about Bonita’s passing attack, I don’t beleive they have faced as stong and tough a defense as La Serna’s. I truly believe this game will be decided by whose defense plays better and who makes the least mistakes. BTW, that sounds like that would be the Lancers. looking forward to an exciting game. Good luck to both teams. Play safe and play hard (yeah, I’m rooting for LS).

    At some point someone will figure out how to easily get more H.S. playoff games on T.V. and make a bundle,even if they are delayed. I like to watch at my leisure all the things I missed at the game.Going to Bellfower tomorrow nite to scout who play next week.

    I think the point I was trying to make was that Tolegian seemed to have already decided who was going to win and that LS didn’t deserve to be on the same field with either Bonita or WC. LS is a much tougher team and not going to be a push over for the Bearcats. LS should be undefeated. When you look at the LS/Downey game, LS didn’t get beat, they gave it to them. Just as SFS handed WC their win last week and Muir handing the win over to Bonita. Not saying the outcome would have still been the same, but minus the turnovers, who knows, it could have been different. For Norwalk, LS stopped a big OL with a monster of an RB and kept him under 100 yards, the first time that’s happened since the begining of last season. Walnut, sure their passing was crazy. And if you looked at the stats, you’d think they won. I think this gives you an idea of how tough the LS defense is. Capable of stopping both the run and pass. Add to this the fact that they are a much more desplined team and well coached, they look to be the only ones that can put up a challange to Tolegian’s precious Hacienda League.

    LS Fan what other cliche do you want to use? In some cases a good offense can be a great tool of ball control and field position. Keep your defense off the field and have them well rested. So it may be which offense has the best night wins the game my friend. Lets hope the officiating improves this week. Lets hope for a well played game. Remember it’s scoreboard. Go Bearcats! Oh yeah, Who have you played that had a stellar defense?

    @ Dan Bocat Fan…….

    La Mirada is all i have to say but your right i mean heck last years defending CIF champions suck right?

  • LS Pompa

    La Serna can do all things, pass, interceptions, running game, quarterback even runs when needed. It might take a quarter to find the strategy, Like we did to walnut, they thought “just run over them threw the middle! worked for the first quarter, then what! what!, what what what…..like the famous cheerleaders say.

    Both teams are good or they would not be here.

    We should have some scouts there checking out out our boys.
    May the best team win as always……

    Go la Serna! Do like you did all year!

    Just came from the West Covina – Mayfair game. What a game. Mayfair had the opportunity to take it. WC didn’t look like the world beaters all the experts said they are. But for a missed field goal, WC’s season would have been done. Yes, luck does play in these games. Congrats to WC and hope we get to face you in the final. Bonita won’t be a cake walk. LS and Bonita should, and hopefully, be just as exciting as WC/Mayfair. I still think that old adage “defense wins championships” is true. Besides having the potential to put up points, LS has, what i feel, is the toughest defense. Not to take anything away from Bonita, since I haven’t seen how good their defense is. However, based on the season and how they’ve played, LS is going to to be a major challange. Good luck to both and may the best team win. BTW, who ever does win, will take CIF. WC isn’t that good (catch that Aram?).

    It’s going to be fun watching Bohi kicking some lancer A$$ tonight, leave the lance at home it’s a turf field no spiking here.

  • CO SUX

    @JFR
    Remind me again, how did CHOAK HI do this year? Oh yeah 1 and done after a year of getting punked in “big boy” ball. I guess you couldn’t measure up to the big boys, Chopitos. This thread is for teams playing not for teams sitting because they had no game. What’s the matter JFR, you so insecure that you have to come to the WDN to see if someone will give you attention?

  • Don

    JFR, 50 yard line, top row.

    As for YOU, mr COS**,

    Nice to see someone like you come on and show his knowledge of the game in so few sentences. Lucky for you, you seem more ignorant than stupid since that part of your problem can be corrected. Next time you want to rag on the C O season ask yourself?

    Who else in the SGV could have scored 4 TD’s on Rancho Cucamonga. Or even just SCORED on Vista Murrietta.

    Who could have moved from the Southeast Division to the Inland and go 6-5. Or even make the playoffs.

    Who from the SGV could have stayed within a TD of Claremont, Glendora, and Chino Hills?

    The move up to Inland play was HUGE. And to do as well as they did this season is a testament to the C O program. Big boy ball doesn’t even begin to describe the handful of teams at the top of the Inland D.

  • CO SUX

    @DON
    You CO guys are all the same idiot in differed lizard skin pumps. You are still butt hurts for being run out of the fish bowl because your school administration has encouraged cheating for years(you call it Pasadena Pipeline I believe). No one can stand your arrogance or your disregard for any set of rules what so ever. May I remind you that you are 6-5, one n done and watching someone elses teams because you lost spectacularly and it will be years before you can cheat your way to any decent showing in the IE. For reference sake, tell me how does it feel to be watching someone else in a foreign stadium in December? No wonder you have to go else for attention, even the dog won’t play with you.

  • CO SUX

    @Don
    Oh to answer your questions completely. West Covina would have kicked all of their a$$es and needed no excuses. NUF Said?

  • JFR

    SUX,

    It’s becoming obvious that you took some A$$ whoppins from CO in the past you angry little girl. I would also be bitter If I was living in my parents basement collecting unemployment drinking keystone all day. Sucks to be you.
