Season in review: Monrovia … Grade: A

Anthony Craft gives Monrovia fans something to be excited about in ’11.

Record: 12-2
Biggest win: 38-8 over Whittier Christian in CIF final.
Worst loss: 35-34 to San Dimas in OT
The Good: The Wildcats took an entire football program off the hook by being the first team in school history to win a CIF championship. Monrovia was previously 0-9 in championship games. But beside the Rio Hondo and Mid-Valley Division titles, the Wildcats proved they could overcome adversity, and that’s something that was in question up until Dec. 12.
The Bad: It’s nitpicking, but this team was good enough to go 13-1. It should have beaten San Dimas in Week 3, but there are some who feel that without that defeat, Monrovia never would have developed its championship character. I can buy that.
The Ugly: Wildcats fans will shed plenty of tears at graduation this June, because that’s when legendary QB Nick Bueno leaves the school for good. Bueno has been the face of the program for three seasons and now comes the task of replacing a rare talent like him. It won’t happen, but that doesn’t mean the ‘Cats won’t be just fine at QB next fall.
Sad to see you go: QB Nick Bueno, LB Derrick Johnson, WR Jay Henderson, DB Charlie Cimmarusti.
What to look forward to: Ellis McCarthy TE/DE is back, he will be one of the top recruits on the Left Coast and the best defensive player in the entire Valley. QB George Frazier is supposed to be a good one, but he’ll have huge shoes to fill. K Mason Bryant will be one of the top kickers in the area. Anthony Craft is another WR/DB talent ready to break out.

  • Aaron

Monrovia was good enough to be 14-0…shouldn’t have lost to Glendora. But that’s why you have non league games…to teach you lessons.

Hey what’s up with Fred’s web-site? After allowing people to rant and rave and act like clowns all year he decides to put filters on his site and dis-allow some posters to post??? Really?

  • Clean Slate

NEVER MIND. I’m the one who is computer illiterate.

  • QuietCat

Why would you even post that here? No one is even comparing any Monrovia player to any Muir player. I’m sure he’s great, but this is an MHS article. Post that when he does the Muir review.

    GoCATS!

By the way did any one heat about the Monrovia parade! January 6th at 630pm. Its going to go from the high school down Madison over on Colorado and up to the library. The captains and Coach Maddox will be speaking. Should be a great night to remember!

    GoCATS!

  • Luke Russert

Luke Williams, Mason Bryant and Anthony Craft will be unmatched offensive juggernaunts next year, You can bank on it.

  • BigCat

The seniors who graduate will definitely be missed. However, let’s go back in history a litle bit.
Remember the blowout games? The second and thrd string guys got to play against the other teasm’s first stringers. Come next year, it’s gonna be the young vets time. George Frazier will be ready to step in. Ellis McCarthy will be back for his senior year. The ‘Cats lost a good WR, but they have guys ready to step up. Running backs? Monrovia is ‘Tailback High!’

The ‘Cats will have the players. They will also have Coach Maddox. Maybe the ‘Cat’s biggest opponent next year will be the SPCA.

Fat man heard thru the grapevine somewherez that Deshawn Ramirez will be back on the team for his senior season.

  • The Monrovia Reload

    @said,

No one is talking about muir in this article… ar you trying to stop Young Crafts Shine? But since you are talking about muir,…I have to add to it. Seymour is one of the best in the valley no doubt about that. So is Craft, Bryant and Williams for Monrovia. Craft and Bryant will be around for two years . They are explosive, and 6ft 170 already. You know they are going to grow some more. It will be extremely hard to key on one guy. With a 6’2 220 qb in Frazier, things are looking good in Mtown. As for Seymour, its not his ability in question, the question is… who is going to get him the ball? Is he going to play QB or WR? Muir had 33 on Roster Last year. 10 of the 12 Lineman on the roster are graduating, not to mention Other starting skill guys. Does Muir have lineman coming up from freshman and jv? Arcadia has Carr and Lagace coming back. Pasadena has Cox, and alot of Jrs coming back. It may be tough for the kid to do damage, if he is the only threat. The turkey tussle will be different next year, and Arcadia is the favorites in the pacific. I am just saying its going to be a tough year in Mustang Country. Unless you have something great coming up. This may be hard to believe, but Monrovia will be a better team next year. They have a lot of talent coming up from the lower levels. They should be the best in the West SGV again next year.

  • Goldenarm

Maddox made huge strides this season in reducing the number of players going both ways and in the end it made a big difference, especially late in the playoffs.
It also helped to mold a “team” vibe as more kids were contributing.
I believe Frazier has the all the tools to become an outstanding QB for Monrovia. He can sizzle the ball and has touch to adjust his throws, he is agile and already has proven his toughness starting on the M-town defense. No team this season could defense the M-town 3 wide out set and receivers were running open all year. Monrovia’s big left OT is also only a sophomore and likely that Maddox may utilize E McCarthy at TE even more next year.
Those that are returning now have championship level experience to infuse into the off season state of mind.
This program is building and has not yet reached the place it is going.

  • MHS Alum ’83

Not here to dis any school, and Key has a nice game, however this is about Monrovia, we will have a enough time to talk about Muir when Aram gives his grade to the the STANGS. Having said that Mason Bryant, Anthony Craft Luke Williams and George Frazier will fill in nicely at MHS as replacements for the loss of NB. It could be said that Nick Bueno was the F430 Ferrari for MHS for the last 3 years. But there is going to be unvailing of the 5 passenger 4 door 2011 Roll-Royce Ghost. Craft, Bryant,Williams, Fraizer, McCarthy will drive that new luxury Rolls-Royce for coach Maddox, So you can choose the Ferrari or the Roll-Royce it really doesnt matter…my point here is that MHS is RICH with talent. Bigger point here is that when driving around the SGV in your Nick Bueno Ferrari you dont really want to bragg that you also have a 2011 Roll-Royce Ghost in the garage sitting at home waiting to be unvailed in 2011.

Coach Maddox has parked his F430 Ferrari in the garage with a CIF ring on the center console. This spring come take a look at coach Maddox’s new ride that 5 passenger 2011 Rolls-Royce its bigger and just luxuriest as the F430. Coach Maddox gave keys to Bryant, Craft, William, Fraizer and McCarthy Saturday night December 12. In the words of my favorite paster TD Jakes FAVOR AINT FAVOR baby. MHS is Dangerous in 2011

  • Luke Russert

MHS Alum ’83 nice statement about the future of MHS… But in the words of Dave Chappelle… MONROVIA FOOTBALL is RICH @#$^&

  • Monrovia is here

Monrovia Should be 14-0. Next year They will still have some tough games.

    Tough Games
Glendora-They lost Jefferies at Qb, but they still have Holmes and Victoria coming back. They also have Size coming up from the Freshman Level and Jv level.

South Hills-The lose some lineman, but they still will have their great RB and QB coming back. Expect them to be tough.

Arcadia- They have two of the areas best players coming back in Lagace and Carr. That game will be a big one at Arcadia High

Paramount-They will have some size and speed, Monrovia will to play a good game to beat them.

San Dimas- We don’t know how good San Dimas will be. They do have One of their QBs coming back. Monrovia should beat them.

    Rio Hondo league play

San Marino- Does have a few players returning, but Monrovia will beat them by 4 scores

La Canada- Is practically losing everyone. They will not be able to play with Monrovia.

Temple City- Will be the secound best team in League. Monrovia is going to beat them by 3 touchdowns

South Pasadena- They are losing their star QB. They will not be as good. Once again Monrovia will beat them by alot.

Blair-They should consider finding a new team for the Rio Hondo. This team needs to drop a to div 13. Monrovia is going to beat them 50-0

    Playoffs

Covina-They are practically returning everyone. However, they do not have the size nor speed to beat monrovia, if they are matched up in the playoffs

Maranatha- With Elfers leading them. Expect them to make a deep run. Monrovia should be able to beat them in a playoff matchup. Ellis, Casas, and Monrovia DB’s will give them problems.

Arroyo-With their star QB coming back, they should have a explosive O. However, they will not be able to cover monrovia skills.

As you can see things are lining up for Monrovia to repeat as Mid Valley Champs. The will be ranke #1 in the Midvalley, West Valley, top 3 in the SGV overall.

    Go Cats!

  • in the know

from what I hear being talked about, glendale and hoover high schools(both from the pacific league) are trying to get into the rio hondo league. maybe they should come in and monrovia should go to the pacific league. from many different stand points this is a great idea. it would match monrovia up with like talent and glendale and hoover would make sense in that league as it it would definetely make it more competitive. as it stands monrovia is the 800 pound gorrilla in that league.

  • Philly B

Aram…I have to admit, Im surprised you didnt grade monrovia with an A- or a B+…with all your doubts you’ve had on Monrovia all year long.

    Now that being said,
MHS Alum ’83-Great analogy right there. Loved it, because its true haha.

    Luke-Couldnt been said any better.

BigCat- Yeah monrovia is Tailback high, but because of Bueno’s just great skill as a dual threat QB, we didnt really need a stable or RB’s to have success in the offense…but for 2011…LET THAT STABLE LOOSE WITH 365 HORSEPOWER

Monrovia will be re-loaded, we all know that. I honestly only fear one league in the playoffs because best believe monrovia is for sure going. No one in the RHL will upset monrovia. But the league I fear is the Olympic league, because most if not all those schools in that league are private schools, and they can recruit whoever they want to come help their program be successful. Village, Valley, and I guess Maranantha, Monrovia has their eye on you….

Intheknow-How certain are you about Hoover and Glendale trying to come over the RHL?????? This needs to happen asap, so Monrovia can get out of the RHL!!! at least in Football. Let the other sports stay in the RHL, but as far as the football program goes, Maddox is trying to create a dynasty here, and the RHL is holding the cats back!

And if the grapevine is true, then getting Ramierez back for his senior year will be great for the wildcats

Monrovia needs to schedule, St. Francis and Muir in the near future

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
