With Zavala gone at Wilson, is Arellanes soon-to-be out at Los Altos? …

I’ve heard from a number of sources that Los Altos coach Jim Arellanes will be out soon as head coach at Los Altos. As far back as a month ago, I heard from a very reliable source that both Zavala and Arellanes would be out. Naturally, I didn’t believe it one bit, so despite the person being an excellent source in the past and present, I didn’t post it. But, today I heard the same thing from several other people.

Arellanes is not thought to be in any kind of trouble with the administration for any type of infraction, but the concern is that he might make a move to secure tenure somewhere else. I’m a little fuzzy on the whole teaching/tenure thing and how that works.

Anyway, I called Arellanes this afternoon and asked him about the rumors. He flatly shot them down.

“Absolutely not,” Arellanes said. “I have a sour taste in my mouth (from last season). It wasn’t an easy year by any means. I want to stay because I want to get this turned around.

“I’ve met with my A.D. and principal about what we’re going to do and what approach we’re going to take. I want to get things right here.”

Aram’s take:
It’s always discomforting as a reporter when you hear something so far-fetched that you blow it off only to hear it again from several others a short time later. Last season, Arellanes did deny he was interested in the Los Altos job right up until he took it, but my gut (and that means something) is that he’s staying … but there’s that small part of me …

If anyone thinks that a coach ( any coach ) could walk in the door and take a program like LA or Wilson in such a disarray and turn them around in 1 year or even 2 then they have set unrealistic goals. And those goals are destined to fail from day 1.
It takes time to teach fundamentals and un-teach bad habits. It takes time to condition. It takes time to teach plays and coverages. It takes time to teach TEAMWORK. It takes time to teach players to trust the guy next to him.
The problem is that we have become a society of instant everything. Just add water. Instant self gratification.

I am in awe of ANY coach today and what they put out compared to what they take in. Those that wear the whistle are far better people than they are given credit for.

One of the best post I have ever seen on this blog. You hit it right on the nail. Coaches do so much with little pay and with the thought of helping young men out. Being a coach myself it is always gratifying watching my players grow from the start of the season to the end. To all coaches, keep up the hard work and always stick to your guns. Hard work pays off in the end!

  • LA guy

Hearing that Arellanes is indeed out and LA has its eyes on ONE guy to replace him…

  • saladays

I know who they want, but I don’t think it will be this year.

By the way can you get rid of those stupid letters to type in. Some of us are a little long in the tooth and its hard to read that stuff.

  • LA Guy Too

Before you talk about how the coaches days are numbered. Someone should talk about that douche of an AD who does nothing to help make the football program better. It is the AD that is the problem…find one that loves the game of football and not one who is there as a stepping stone to a administration position. If that is done you will then have a successful program no matter who you have as head coach. That goes for all of the schools programs. Most successful schools their AD’s have been or currently are varsity coaches in some sport that is on the schools campus. Coaching junior varsity with a book full of trick plays does not count. Look at Wilson getting an AD with some football history, which people on these blogs can speak of. As for Los Altos not so much. So please Mr. Garcia step down and let someone who has forgotten more about football than you will ever know take your position and run a schools sports programs like they should be run.

You’re right Arellanes is gone. Him and Koffler! ha ha ha!

I really don’t want to get into the coaching conversation. I will just for a second, but there are some bigger issues. As far as LA goes Arellanes new that he wasn’t their first choice to be the new LA coach. So he was kind of behind the 8 ball to start. I think LA did a terrible job of mentoring Felipe Aguilar. He was a young energetic coach who was vested at LA. They should have done more to bring him along. I couldn’t have been worse. Ok enough about coaching.
I’m not seeing the talent pool at LA (or in Hacienda Heights) being very deep in football that’s one issue. The second issue I see is the stat of the facilities. That goes for Wilson and Los Altos. The statdums and fields are just about the worst in the area. The other schools in the Hacienda League have turf fields and relatively new stadiums. If i’m looking for a place to send my kid, I want him to play someplace where they have a nice state of the are facility. So LA and Wilson would be out of the question. In the Academic category, Where do Los Altos and Wilson compare to DBar, Rowland, and Walnut. So basically I wouldn’t be sending my son or daughter to either of those schools. Transfers are everything to LA. This dates back to the 70’s. Hey Wilson won 2 CIF Championships with Amat rejects. How close have they been since. I took Amat some time (and Coaches) to bounce back. But they are back on top. I don’t know if the public schools can bounce back like that.

  • SGV – there should be an I-60 League

Hey SGV, there should a league with the five you mentioned and maybe either D Ranch or Nogales – they all all within throwing distance of the 60

PS – All five you mentioned – LA, Wilson, D Bar, Rowland, Walnut – are all on the Newsweek Top 800 high schools in America – and all within 8 miles of either – no other place in the nation have 5 on the list so close to each other

If you play Kiss Ass Favorites Like Jim Arellanes tried His record now is 0-20 playing Kiss Ass Favs.

You will fail everytime with this type of Ego.

Play the best only or you have no business coaching to Win.

    Arellanes is a born Loser………….

The worst play calling in the history of LA.

He should have not been Hired Now FIRE Him.

  • Lets compare

    Hmmm bbbbb,

lets compare, try this on for size, jim arrellanes a born loser huh, so getting a full ride scholarship to fresno state and graduating and actually in the seattle seahawks camp for a minute, and playing a few years in the world league overseas, and actually winning the championship while being named the MVP, that is what you call a loser?
Now compare those credentials with yours, ready, go…
    ill be waiting…
If you want to label born losers, try taking the route LA GUY did below, the only loser in this entire situation is AD Garcia, what are his credentials and experience again? The guy cant coach or lead, period…
