Los Altos names Dale Ziola head football coach

By Steve Ramirez
Staff Writer

Dale Ziola, an assistant at Los Altos High School last season and previously at Montebello, is the Conquerors’ new football coach.

He succeeds Jim Arellanes, who last month was let go after one season at the Hacienda Heights school.

Ziola, the fourth coach at Los Altos since Conqueror legend Dwayne DeSpain retired following the 1996 season, is a former player at Whittier College.

His coaching tenure began at Montebello, where he was an assistant from 2004-09 before moving over to Los Altos last season, where he coached running backs.

Ziola was also a finalist when Arellanes, who came over from Northview, was hired prior to last season.

The Conquerors’ program has been on a downward spiral the past few years, winning just four games since 2007.

Former area player of the year Felipe Aguilar, who followed Greg Gano prior to the 2008 season, went 1-9 and 3-7 before resigning. Arellanes followed, and went 0-10 this past fall.

Aram’s take: This one caught me surprise, as Los Altos obviously moved very quickly to replace Arellanes. Did LA fly the position? Did it conduct interviews? How did LA make a hire so quickly while Wilson is still deep in the process of finding its new coach, which is a vacancy that came about earlier than Los Altos’ did. Anyway, don’t know much about Coach Ziola. I will find out more …

  • You Got To Be Kidding Me …….

This is the same guy that was coaching the freshmen team last season, this season was promoted to the running back coach from that he is now the new Head Coach of the program.

    That is just crazy,

    I am shocked!

    Aram are you sure?

  • Engage and Conquer

Good for LA. It is a step in the right direction; from what is being said there is a freshman through varsity staff already getting put in place. Back off and let them have a chance. Don’t take it down the path of stupid commentary like that other school.

  • LA Alum

Just hired a coach with one year of varsity experience as a running back coach, what you expect. This guy doesn’t have any OC or DC experience at the varsity level. Based on the “Engage and Conquer” comment this program is going to be built around the existing coaches at Los Altos, what is the administration thinking?

The other school, at least they are trying to hire a legitimate staff. Los Altos basically just promoted their freshman and JV staff to varsity and said go for it. Any incoming freshmen parent would be crazy to bring their son into this mess. Is the administration that clueless? Los Altos is now officially the weakest football program in the Hacienda La Puente School District, and yes weaker than Workman.

    Who did they all interview?

  • lets compare

word is that Ziola and Burke, two coaches on the staff last year with arrellanes basically threw him under the bus with the administration, playing their own agendas to get where we are now, and if this is true, and we all heard it, we now have a very dishonest, unloyal, snake running the program, and im sure he will bring his man at arms with him, that other snake …Burke.
Great job Garcia, another masterful job!!

  • LA Conq

Christ Almighty guys! Do you ever stop? Give Ziola chance! Guy hasn’t even been the head ball coach for ONE FREAKIN DAY and already everyone is climbing down his throat…judging his “lack of experience”.

I’ve met coach Ziola plenty of times. He is a straight-forward, tell it like it is, no nonsense kind of guy. He knows football, cares about our kids, and knows how to inspire young men.

Now I realize all you slappys out there wanted LA to put together a huge coaching search and hire John Gruden, Urban Meyer or somebody with a “proven track record”. But let’s be honest here…no one was beating the door down to apply guys! Ziola is an on-campus guy, who the admin trusts and they know exactly what they are getting. They aren’t getting a proven head coach. They ARE getting a young, energetic, knowledgable, fire-up-the-troops kind of guy who can inspire our young men to play their hearts out. I think they guy is a winner. Just my take.

As for the allegations that Ziola and Burke threw Arrellanes under the bus…that’s ridiculous! Arrellanes didn’t need to be thrown under the bus. His dumbass crawled under it himself and fell asleep! He was running ZERO off season program! Never ONCE did he gather his troops and discuss a plan of attack for improving on an 0-10 season! He sat his lazy ass in his office while the kids went out and attempted to organize workouts themselves! (that’s right…the QB Virnala organized more workouts this past off season that their “coach” did!) So please, spare me the “Arrellanes got screwed” bit. Unless you’re around this program and have a kid involved TODAY…you know NOTHING about what is going on.

  • Coach Slayer

Hope this guys background is cleaner than Mother Teresa’s because people are looking for dirt on this guy as we speak and will not stop till the get some. He won,t last a month.

  • LA Alum

    LA Conq,

Your version of what went on out there and my son’s is quite a bit different.

A comment was made about the Wilson parent’s earlier. To be honest with you I would rather be on a program that the parents care enough that they get up in their administration a@@, and put pressure on them to get a quality staff. Our parents are already done and don’t care anymore and it shown with the results. Before you even say it, I am going to transfer my son to Wilson; at least the parents give a crap.

  • LA Conq

    LA Alum,

Yeah, that’s probably the easiest thing…just transfer your kid out. Afterall, the best life lesson you can teach your kid is to not battle through adversity, but to just pack you bags and leave to where it’s more comfortable.

    Good Riddance “Alum”.

  • LA Conq

Oh, and what exactly is your son’s version? ‘Cause I pretty much know for a FACT that it happened the way I said it.

  • Engage and Conquer

LA Alum you are not. You are way to defensive about the comment about the other school. LA football parents care enough that they are not going to blast the business all over the blogs. They know how little Arellanes put into the program. They know how much time other people did over the last two years. Ziola, Burke, Ortiz may be young but energy, enthusiasm and commitment is something that has been missing for a long time.

  • Coach Slayer

Mr. Conq. You must be the annointed blog defender. Right? I suggest you get some help on these blogs or post under alot of different names cause you sound like one of the new hirees. Anyway I find it wild that after all the controversy the school goes right back and hires Arrellanes staff? It seems the Shakspearean drama continues to unfold in The Heights. “Ettu Brute” By the way I knew Arrellanes a few years back and unless he pulled a Charlie Sheen he is anything but lazy.

  • Catzzz

    LA Conq

“They aren’t getting a proven head coach. They ARE getting a young, energetic, knowledgable, fire-up-the-troops kind of guy who can inspire our young men to play their hearts out.”

That’s what Wilson thought they were getting in Zavala just a couple of years ago, and we all know how that worked out…

  • Los Altos AD, YOU gotta Go

Good Grief! Serious issues in Los Altos Athletic Department

  • bbbbb

    Folks

Be HAPPY that Jim Arellanes is gone.
This guy at least tried to play the best
but was unable to due to Arellanes favoritism.
    Cost him his JOB.
    WHAT A BURN.

Play only the best the WHOLE game.

Do not dwell on satisfying Kiss Ass Parents.

    This will never work.

  • Interesting

You don’t see anything wrong with this hire Ziola, Burke, and Ortiz. One year ago, they were two junior varsity and one freshmen coach. Today they are the varsity staff. Does this really look like a good hire. I question how Burke even still has a job as many incidents over the last few years he has been involved in.

It is a big jump from a DC or OC to a head coach of a program. Ziola has one year of varsity experience as a running back coach. Another despite hire, how can anyone see this any other way? I dont necessary blame this on the administration I believe their hands are being tied by district requirements. I may be wrong but as many football coaches on staff at the school the administration may have been required to hire from within like La Puente was a couple years ago. That would make sense and align with Wilsons situation, since they fired the complete staff they would have the option to hire a on campus teacher/head coach.

  • Facts

Where do you guys get your information from.

Ziola was the running back caoch last season (2010) that is correct.

Ziola was the freshmen coach at Los Altos (2009).

Ziola was not a finalist when Arellanes was hired this last season. The finalist were Arellanes and Godinez.

    This stuff is common knowledge.

  • LA Grad

Wilson parents, please go back to talking about your dysfunctional program and stop labeling yourselves as LA Alum!

Look I was the first to say it was unfair for Arellanes to get fired after one season and I was also concerned about letting the spring go without someone at the head of the program. So now a coach is hired quickly; how can we go and complain about the lack of interviews.

The bottom line is that Garcia knows Ziola, Burke and Ortiz. So if he does NOT work out, I think Garcia has to go. Having said that, LA was NOT GOING TO GET a proven coach with a winning record, what would we offer?

I love the way people discount what they want to discount and blow up what they want to blow up. Everybody talks about a freshman and running back coach; didnt he have 5 years at Montebello? They played the Augilar/Cody teams in a couple of playoff games. Anyway, Ziola is our coach and I wish him luck. I hope he focuses on making the kids that are out there the best that they can be. Worry about the little details and the touchdowns and wins will come appropriately.

The young members at LA should have nothing to worry about; they will be tasked to bring back the proud tradition of Los Altos and I think they have to talent to make us all proud.

  • brilliant

great!!! replace a bad coach with a underling. I wonder who Los Altos will hire next March. You can still dig up Knute Rockne’s corpse. Although I dont think there would be much left. Hopefully you will only find his Spine — Which you need.

  • common knowledge

this is what is “common knowledge”…Ziola did apply for the job last year, and from what was put out there, it was a token interview, kind of a courtesy interview since he was on campus, but was never taken seriously as a candidate last year.
So with that said…almost one year to the day, Ziola went from an after thought in the admins eyes, to their top prize?
does that make any sense to anyone?
And it may be a fact that arrellanes made his bed and now is resting in it, but it is also a fact that Ziola and burke went benedict arnold on him as well and that is shameful.
and it does make sense that maybe the admin over at LA had their hands tied here, not many applicants, and had to stay in house, that does make sense, but it is also “common knowledge” that Ziola was not their first choice, not even close, it was pretty much their only choice.
and some of you out there should stay off of athletic director garcia on this one, its already floating out there that he wasnt 100% sold on this hire, but the oh so lost and overwhelmed principal Mcreynolds pulled the trigger on this one.
and lastly Mr Ziola, have you figured out who the administration is going to use on your staff to keep tabs on you, just like they used you to keep tabs on arrellanes, yea….karma kid

  • Gag Order

L.A. may feel they don’t owe the trib an explanation for this hire but at some point real soon they will have to answer to the players and parents if they want the program to move forward. After all this espionage the last two years someone will be forced to have to explain all this. Football sets the tone for the school year and how you hire and treat coaches reflects badly on all the L.A. sports programs. I’m not sure but it seems like many of their teams are sliding down hill very rapidly from where they once were. Since Ziola was part of last years staff it is logical to assume other staffers will be staying as well. I thought I read a statement that L.A. wanted to go in another direction in firing last years coach so is this the other direction? Sincerly hope an explanation is forthcoming because this situation screams for one.

I heard from a good source that the LA Admin was going to offer the job to a coach from out of state not named Godinez. Heard they were really impressed with this coach. Anybody know who the guy is?

  • david rivera

well it really doesnt matter what coach they bring in at los altos and wilson. until they get the black and whit athletes back in the heights, these programs will not flourish and you can take that to the bank

  • AMAT 73

Speaking from experience of the Verti years the people of LA should let this coach at least show you what he will bring to the program . Give him at least one season first to see what his plans are and how he goes about implementing is program .If you don’t see what you like then blast away all you want but give the guy a chance. From an 0-10 season the only way is up . If he at least musters up 4 wins he will have equaled the 2 previous coaches in what they did in 3 years time. This should be an interesting summer for football south of the 60 freeway .

Amat 73… I would normally agree with you except that Jim Arrelanes is a good coach. This guy stabbed him in the back and the AD bought it. Everyone in the SGV knows Jim is a good coach and got stabbed.

  • Interesting summer??? – more than u know

    AMAT73,

wait till the new coaches find out that some of their best returning seniors will not be around for a while, for example:

Tibbs from LA has committed to his rugby club team this spring and summer and Nelson from Wilson has committed to his camps, combines, and competitions this spring and summer

  • Dirty

I was curious about Ziola’s coaching experience, so I called a coaching friend from Montebello. I asked him about Ziola, first comment was “Horrible”. Second comment was the back stabbing of Arellanes during the season, he could totally believe it. Ziola had zero experience at the Varsity level at Montebello.

In summary Los Altos just hired a head coach with one year of coaching at the varsity level as a running back coach.

From the outside looking in it sure looks like Ziola and Burke threw Arellanes under the bus and the administration stepped on the gas pedal.

  • Only at Los Altos

The 09′ season that Ziola came over to LA he was hired on as an assistant coach on the freshmen squad. During the summer Harwell stepped down as the head coach and Ziola got the job.

Only at Los Altos, hired as an assistant coach on the freshmen team and in two season your the head coach of the whole progam.

  • hh

    Interesting summer???

Let’s see, Tibbs helped LA to how many wins this past season……………….. Oh, my bad. Uh none, was it? Yea, okay, so he’s apparently expendable.

And Nelson, even if he does run the right route, or doesn’t jog the last half of it, now has no one at Wilson to throw him the ball.

  • AMAT 73

    Observer,
That must have been one heck of a blade to cause the team to go 0-10 last season. Saying Arellanes is a good coach is kind of questionable because I don’t think the exodus of talent was bad enough to leave the cupboard bare . Or was it just the fact of not enough talent at LA to field a decent team. You would think with all the turmoil and problems at Wilson they could have at least beaten them .

  • LA Admin?

    Amat 73,

That blade had nothing to do with the 0-10 season, but it did have a hell of a lot to do with Arellanes’ firing. I truly believe that the 0-10 season is not the reason Arellanes was let go, but Ziola and the 400 pound slob were close to Garcia and the admin. I said at the very beginning that they were the Benedict Arnolds. Aguilar was also one of their innocent victims. They consistently bad mouthed Arellanes and the coaches he brought with him to not only the administration, but even to the players.

I just don’t see how LA thinks that this hire is a step up from a coach that had won back to back league titles. How is it that during that time, Arellanes was considered one of the better coaches in the area, and now all of a sudden he became a lazy idiot? And for those saying that he didn’t have an off-season program are flat out foolish. After school football workouts had already been going on.

Arellanes is very well respected by his peers and from what I hear other coaches aren’t gonna be feeling too bad for running up the score against the sneaky LA dudes.

  • HH – really???

So ESPN put Nelson on the All CA State Football Team because he jogged his routes and Tibbs got 2nd team league RB because he isn’t any good,

    yeah right

  • LA Grad

    Ball Coach,

Godinez was a key player with Aguilar/Cody/Parker team that three-peated about 8 years ago. He is also the son of long time coach Godinez who coached the DB’s and running backs off and on. Both great guys. It was assumed that the younger Godinez would take over for Aguilar so when LA went the direction of Arellanes many kids bolted from LA. Godinez is now coaching some college in North Carolina, I think.

For those that are still complaining about Ziola being a Freshman coach, thats where Gano started. Coach Dean was the JV coach and when Despain skipped him to give it to Gano, many were shocked but it turned out to be a pretty call.

Give Ziola a chance. BTW, there is a difference between backstabbing and standing up and saying something is wrong here.

  • L Altos – decline almost universal

just came from a Wilson, L Altos, Cerritos HS track meet.

Wilson dominated with Cerritos a good second and L Altos a very distant third. More than a few events had only Wilson and Cerritos runners running

seems to me there is a very deepseeded problem at L Altos with football program 0-10, boys basketball at all levels were way below .500, Gano leaves softball and LA track team probably very weak overall, yes, the decline would seem almost universal save a few very good girls in soccer and a superstar soph in water polo.

  • Facts

    LA Grad,

That comparison of Ziola to Gano is a reach and I am being nice. People were shocked at the Gano hire, but you forgot to mention the six years Gano was the head coach over at Northview before he came to LA. Ziola’s three or four years of coaching at the freshmen and JV level at Montebello (only one as a head coach). This program has major issue and the only question is can they keep the freshmen class from transferring out again. Depending on the Wilson hire they may be picking up a few freshmen transfers.

    Now Mr. HH – really???,

    Here are some facts;

Scott Tibbs had 147 carries for 599 yards 4.08 yards per carry 74.9 per game 33 yards long and 5 touchdowns. High school RB’s average 5.0 a carry, Tibb’s 4.08 is below the average. I was going to say good backs average 7 yards a carry and great backs average over 10 yards a carry. Moe Vega on Wilson’s team averaged 7.83 yards per carry, and I believe was second team all-league in the VVL. Tibb’s isn’t going anywhere; the only team he would start on in the area is Wilson.

Nelson got third team on the junior squad. The Monrovia sophomore QB MoGeorge Frazier got second team for sophomores; he was the backup QB at Monrovia. He was 5 for 13 for 98 yards.

Nelson’s stats, he clearly was the second best WR on his own team. Czarnack had 15 less receptions and 15 more yards.

    J. Nelson 38 539 14.18 53.9 39 6
    G. Czarnack 23 554 24.09 69.3 81 3

  • Class of ’03

    LA Grad,
first, yes godinez played with aguilar, cody, and parker, but LA never 3 peated, they won in ’99 and 2000, lost in semi’s godinez JR year in ’98 to harvard westlake, and then you know they lost to CO in ’01, and won titles in ’02 and ’03, so never did LA 3 peat, and godinez won one title, Aguilar, cody and parker won 2 titles…
secondly, dont even try and compare Gano starting out as a frosh coach to this guy Ziola starting off as a frosh coach, Gano paid his dues, coached many years of baseball and a few years of football at LA, Wilson, then at Northview, then was handed the keys to the “Bentley”..this kid Ziola has a few years experience at Montebello and two years at LA, and only one as a varsity coach, are you kidding me, there are no similarities at all, none whatsoever!!!
and those in the know, understand what went on, it was backstabbing, plain and simple, this guy had his own agenda, and in the end, it all worked out to his benifit, so hey, cant be mad at him for that.
and i find it interesting that even his counterparts over at montebello dont have anything positive to say about him while coaching together…
and lastly, no one has anything to say about the fact that Ziola interviewed for the workman job last year and was passed over, but he can get the LA job, so workman dont want you, but LA does, boy have times changed

  • Reality

Hey “L Altos – decline almost universal” or should I call you by your real name…Mr. Nelson. Stop talking through your a@@! LA has at least six runners who did not run who run a sub 4:35 mile, sub 2:05 800 and a sub 10 minute 2-mile! If they would have ran they would have sweeped everyone of those races just like they have done every year. In addition, the majority of the Varsity sprinters did not run because they are healing from injuries! Stop being an idi@t and get a life! You are embarrassing your self, the school and worst yet, your son! We all hear your stup!t comment when your son won the hurdles!

  • ???

Hey Aram! You said you’d find out more about Coach Ziola. Soooooo….what have you found out? Come on buddy, you’re killin me!

  • Facts

What is interesting about this is the blogger have more accurate information than Aram has posted.

Aram – “Dale Ziola, an assistant at Los Altos High School last season and previously at Montebello, is the Conquerors’ new football coach.”

Fact – Daile Ziola, was hired in the 2009 season as an assistant coach on the freshmen team. Latter became the head coach when Harwell stepped down.

Aram – “His coaching tenure began at Montebello, where he was an assistant from 2004-09 before moving over to Los Altos last season, where he coached running backs.”

Facts – His coaching tenure begain at Montebello, where he was a freshman and JV coach from 2004-08 before moving over to Los Altos in 09, where he coached the freshmen team.

Aram – “Ziola was also a finalist when Arellanes, who came over from Northview, was hired prior to last season.”

Fact – Ziola applied, was interview as a coutery, never was a finalist. At the time didn’t have a single day experience at the Varsity level.

Aram “His coaching tenure began at Montebello, where he was an assistant from 2004-09″

Fact – His coaching tenure began at Montebello, where he was a JV and Freshmen coach from 2004-2008. No Varsity experience at all.

Aram once again who is your source, you are way off!

  • Observer – not Monrovia or Wilson

wow, players from the area get an all state football honor with probably a thousand high schools in california and someone has to put them down because they want someone else or their kid on the list, not all self centered people work for obama evidently

  • LA Admin

    LA Grad,

Yes there is a difference and what he did is backstabbing. If he weren’t a snake or didn’t follow his personal agenda, he would have went to Arellanes personally and had a discussion with him about what he thought was best for the program. This is something that good coaching staffs do when problems or disagreements arise. Instead he went crying to administration so that he could get his own way.

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

    Facts,

Lost in your hatred toward me, you forgot to see who wrote the article. But I get it, you’re blind.

Anyway, here is the press release put out by the school, so you can momentarily turn your venom toward that.

It is with much excitement that we announce that Dale Ziola will be the new Head Football coach of Los Altos High School. After receiving numerous resumes and going through an extensive interview process with talented coaches, Coach Ziola stood out in exhibiting passion, energy, a plan, and a vision that we believe will positively capture the attention of our football players and our community. Coach Ziola played football for Whittier College for four years (2000-2003) and was the team captain his senior year. He coached football at Montebello HS from 2004-2009. During his time at Montebello he coached various levels and positions. Since 2009 he has been part of the Los Altos football community coaching the freshman team in 2009 and this past year serving as the varsity running backs coach. Coach Ziola was also a finalist in last years coaching search.

Fact: You don’t know more than the school.

Fact: You need a new hobby.

  • Heights

Hey Mr. Nelson. Do yourself and your son a favor….Get his butt in the WEIGHT ROOM. I don’t know much but he wasn’t even the top receivers in his own league. He is 6’3, 170 (maybe). I’ll tell you what….There was another 6’3 receiver in your league who crushed Nelson as a Junior and Senior. Don’t see him signing. In fact didn’t see any receivers from the area signing. The Baldwin Park kid will be a slot or play on D. You know why? Because D1 colleges what those tall receivers to be animals and hit the weights. No one likes skin an bones.

  • details

I find it interesting in the LA press release they do mention that Ziola coached at montebello, but only at “various levels and positions”…why not be detailed in exactly what experience this kid has?
i think we know the answer to that, kind of shows a lack of confidence in him already, if he is wet behind the ears, then so be it, but stand behind your man..
and if the past in destined to repeat itself, look for Burke to pull a Ziola this year and be next in line to be head coach in 2012, keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer

  • This actually IS Mr. nelson

my son has a technically really bad 300m h (probably his worst ever), CIF track meets are only 8 weeks away, my motivation and training measures have been the same for 12 years now with one more to go, to bad it upsets you

if that does upset you then post your tactics for your son/daughter (and give the results) and I will at least think about changing if i think it would promote excellence for my son, as i see fit

say what you want but my measures have led in part to multiple junior olympics in track and cross country, 2 world championships in taekwondo, wont even mention national, regional, state honors and results in numerous sports

so, here is a lot of new info for you to complain again

  • ???

Where did this 6’3″ come from Nelson is 6’1″ and that is pushing it. That is what is posted for basketball.

  • ???

    Aram,

    Your blog, your responsible.

Extensive interview process, two weeks do they really think we believe that.

  • Wheel

It’s a shame that LA’s, and Wilson’s high point of the coming season, the battle for the wheel, will come in week two (if it remains as last season). After that, it’s looking like a long road.

Listen before you go completely whack why don’t you get one of your godesses to bring you some of Sheens tiger blood? BTW Holman offered the job now just deciding.

  • david rivera

the heights is finished, period end of story. no blacks spells no sucess and no coach with any reputation would ever consider taking the wilson job. all he has to do is walk around the campus for about 1 hour and that would be enough to chase him away.

Status on Wilson job, it was offered to a coach out of the area. He turned it down due to prices of homes in the Heights. The job has now been offered to a local coach.

  • What up LA peoples

    Hey LA,
Drove by your field the other day, and it looked like they were putting in a bomb shelter.

    What’s the deal?

  • Field update at LA

The parents and community at Los Altos High School finally convinced the HLPUSD that they need a new field. Los Altos High school is getting a brand new field installed. It will be one of the best all natural turf fields in the valley! Everything from drainage to sprinklers have been replace and the turf will be installed very soon! By the way, Wilson is up next…heard by June.

  • Catz

Wilson better get a new field then too. :) Only fair.

  • LA Field?

so it’s going to be a grass field or an artificial turf field?

    thanks for the clarification.

  • Rolls eyes…

Hey Columbo. Here’s a clue for ya; “sprinklers”

  • LAST TIME I HEARD

    LA Field,
Last time I heard , there is nothing artificial about all NATURAL turf. Also why would would artificial turf need sprinklers ???????

  • X’s and O’s

Artificial turf fields DO have sprinklers…. When it’s 95 degrees in the summer, it’s 110 degrees on turf. The heat that the field turf brings about causes a need for sprinklers.
