Spring practice begins! Aram visits West Covina …

This is the first in what I hope is a series of spring practice visits (Freddie permitting). Anyway, what I’ll do is a give a brief and concise opinion of what I saw everywhere I go. And it will go a little something like this.

West Covina (13-1 in 2010)

Numbers: About 160-180
Aram’s impression: Athletes, athletes, athletes. I can see why there was a recruiter from Boise St. watching the proceedings. WestCo’s offseason weight lifting program has become well-known for helping the Bulldogs play the physical style that they’ve become known for. And the fruits of this year’s program was on full display Monday. Justin Meaders looks like Drago (sorry if I just dated myself, young guys you can google to get up to speed). Chris Solomon has gotten much bigger, too. I saw about eight guys who look like they can play anything from linebacker to safety to receiver. Keep in mind that not much can be gleaned from spring ball, just like 7-on-7, but you can definitely tell just what type and how many “athletes” a program has and West Covina is just fine.
Under the radar: Dorrin Turner and Troy Webb. Wow. Turner played LB last year and should be very, very good this year. Webb will be a junior and did not play last season, but will be a receiver this year. I’m telling you, there’s lots of potential here.

correction on the last name: dorrin “turner” not tucker. thanks that is all!

  • Aaron

I thought Meaders was a couple inches taller…unless Solomon grew like three inches.

Dorrin Turner will not be under the radar for long. This kid has a very high football IQ, extremely athletic and is a relentless defender at the LB spot. If he stays healthy, look out!!!!

  • Bulldogs have bite

    @ Aaron,

Last years football programs had Meaders listed at 6-2, and Solomon 6-1. Both of them look like they have put on a lot of muscle. Turner is not as far under the radar in Bulldog country, it’s just difficult to get your name called over the loud speaker when Dupleasis was tackling everything in sight last year.

Other key players to look out for are Jimmy Frazier RB/S and George Castro OL/DL. There are also some really talented JV kids comming up also. Don’t know his name, but #3 on JV last year looks like a very talented RB!

    Go Bulldogs!

  • Solomon got taller and he was standing somewhat in front of Meaders in that video.

I’m a little sour I didn’t get to see Aaron Salgado. He cracks me up because I feel for whoever tries to tackle him. Anyway, he’s playing baseball right now but will be back soon.

  • Bulldog Nation

Neither meaders or solomon have grown an inch since last season, justen remains 6’1″ exactly and chris remains at 6’0″ even. They have just been packing on muscle, working out hard on their own!

What does WC schedule look like?

    Finally Spring Training!
Didn’t make todays or yesterdays practice, but I should make one tomorrow. Anxious to check out the new and returning players, 160 to 180 turnout is exciting to hear, coaches must have been recruting the P.E. classes something hard in the offseason. There should be some talent in that mix although the numbers will decrease as spring and summer moves along. I’ve also heard we should have a pretty good 8th grade class coming in.
Hope we can turn a QB out of the bunch, seems we need that more than anything, from what I heard if we can turn out a decent one, we may even be better this year, but lets take it one step at a time, summer and fall are a long way’s off, lots of weight to pump, drills & sprints to run, Linemans competitions to attend and passing games to play, and thats before we get to hellweek and pads. Solomon, Salgado, Meaders, Castro, Munoz, Finley, Turner, Fraizer, Barnett, Henderson, Vilches, Amaya, Huynh, Ojala, are 14 reasons to be excited as these kids are either regular returning starters or have started at least a couple games. I may have missed one or two. Also heard we have some good lower level kids coming up.

Norco, I believe the West Covina schedule is as follows.
    Week 0 – Covina
    Week 1 – Loyola
    Week 2 – South Hills
    Week 3 – Glendora
Week 4 – 1st league game (could also be a bye week)

  • certainly like your web site but you need to check the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I find it very troublesome to inform the reality then again I’ll surely come back again.
