Pomona coach Anthony Rice speaks!!! Says battle for QB spot is tight, but Tavea Cobb seems to be the frontrunner to be under center in the opener vs. Garey

Fred Robledo got a hold of Pomona coach Anthony Rice and what he found out may surprise some of you. Or, maybe not …

Coach Rice gave Fred the impression that he’s leaning toward senior Tavea Cobb at quarterback. It seems Cobb has some wheels to go with a nice arm. Looks like he’s got the slight edge over Wilson transfer Brandon Schrieman.

Rice is also high on running back Donald Morris, who he thinks may be one of the top-five backs in the area by season’s end.

Freddie also got San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow talking about the Saints, who Coach Z believes are flying under the radar … just the way he likes it. I never got the vibe SD was under the radar, but perception is everything.

Sounds like the Saints have some very good running backs and maybe my concerns about the SD skill spots being down from last year and two years ago are unfounded. We’ll see …

Aram’s take: I’m happy we finally got some accurate info on Pomona and we got it straight from Rice. Given what I’ve read on the blogs, I was a little surprised to read that there’s even a battle at QB … with Cobb is looking like the frontrunner. Just goes to show you that you can’t always trust what you read in the comments section of the blogs. About Morris, I’m very intrigued to see this kid. To say somebody will be top-five in this area — meaning he’s right up there with Solomon, Moore and Hart — is really something.

I do believe Pomona has some talent. I do believe they will be in the mix for the VVL title. However, once the hype has settle down and the season begins, they will have to step up and beat Covina and San Dimas. Both of these teams are good. The Question for Pomona is “chemistry”. Will the players play good together? Is the line going to hold hold up. Most schools have some skill players, but no line. I’ve heard so much about the speed and talent, but nothing about the line. Once adversity sets in, can your team pull together and come out with the victory. If Pomona is mentally tough and together, you may see a new VVL champ, and top 4 seed in the midvalley. The tribune has been correct, in not basing their analysis on “word of mouth”, or even a few good passing league performances. The SGV will have to see it on Friday night. I am not sure why Pomona fans wanted any pub. I would rather be a “quiet surprise, rather than a loud Let down”. Quiet confidence. is the best way to go about things. I am sure the reason why Rice did not communicate with The tribune is because he wanted be what coach “Z” said “under the radar”. When you have transfers, QB battles, 2nd year staff, and a few down years, the last thing a coach wants to do is say”look at us”. He did not want any one to know what they had. Pomona Fans, kind of let the “Devil” out the bag. This whole Aram hates Rice or vice versa is a farce. Good Reporter should always be a skeptic and question everything. A good coach never shows his cards. I think Both of these gentleman were doing what they were supposed to do. I am sure that all communication or lack of, was professional and nothing personal. Since Pomona fans have made so much noise about this team, they will ride out win or lose. No excuse, no hating, and should be supporting them with huge attendance numbers. Now everyone is looking, the pressure is building. Can they deliver? Where are you at Ptown? We will see.

Given the choice to having one QB as a clear cut winner for the job, or two QB’s that can step in and get the job done…..I’d take the two in a heartbeat.
I think this revelation only helps build on the preseason hype for P-town instead of distract from it.

  • Ptown Meltdown

Holly crap! If Schrieman is sitting on the bench to start the season, Mark will be loosing his mind. This blog will blow-up with “the coaches don’t know what they are doing” “aliens have kidnapped our coaching staff and replaced them with Tustin Pop Warner Coaches” “the CIA is behind this” etc, etc.
    Let the crazy begin.

Hey David Rivera, is this B.S. or what? Real chickenscratch. I guess things aren’t always what they appear. His dad must be hot. This is a dirty move right out of Williams and Zavalas playbook. A trip back home would realty set this nonsense straight.

Oh buddy, horrible news for 7 and his dad . Everyone thought he was gonna be the right man for the job. Maybe Z & W knew what they were doing after all. It’s the only conclusion I change to. I seen him pass a little against CH.H. he looked respectable. But the H.C. does have a solid coaching background. Well I know we can sure use a QB. Come home 7. We might even give you some on the D-side.

  • Bla Bla Bla

Fred or Aram, just wanna let u know that Coach Rice is blowing smoke up ur behind otherwise hell would have broke loose with Mark’s posts by now.. Coach Rice wouldnt dare sit #7 or he might find himself in the unemployment line like his boy Zavala.. Coach Rice just wants to defuse the bomb that Mark is about 2 set off and take the target off #7 back side.. Bottom line all im saying is that if #7 dsnt start, Mark himself would call CIF and turn P-town (recruits) “TRANSFERS” in and put that program in jeopardy!!!!

  • DB

    Bla Bla Bla,

I have to agree with you on one point Rice is blowing smoke up Aram’s and Fred’s behind. We (Diamond Bar) have played Pomona twice in 7on7, once early summer and once again toward the end of summer and both times Schrieman got all the snaps at QB, there are no other QB. Based on no response from Pomona bloggers I have to also conclude that Rice and Schrieman are in on this together. Also have to conclude that there are issues between the Tribune and Rice.

    This thread is suspiciously silent…

Either GRI suffered a heart attack, or maybe there’s a grain of truth to the conspiracy theory.

Concerning the Pomona QB thing the Pink Panther says: “the moving finga writes”

  • Inspector Gadget

Coach Rice is trying to throw the dogs off the scent because Schrieman does not live in the district.

Breaking news, insider reports strong talks of Schrieman and father leaning heavily towards the move back home since the report of Rice’s QB decision earlier this week. Best wishes to rice and QB. 7 will fit right in at home. I think 7 and his father got the message across to W. but W. will be waiting with arms wide open.

    NO,NO,NO !!!!!

    GRI back to Wilson?

That’s like going to doctor and requesting he implant you with cancer !!!

The Kid is a good tough QB, and I feel for all drama dad heaps on him.

  • football jones

GRI definitely got his message across, not only to Wilson, but the entire SGV – poor guy’s in dire need of mental health.

    End of subject.

  • westco

Go to westco we need a holder for pat’s cuz he ain’t no QB.

  • Pinocchio’s nose is real long right now

FYI. Cobb had 13 carries last year for 77 yards and had 1 TD from a pass, he has never been under center his whole football career, the Trib has been shambuzzled, and boy, is it refreshing

  • Jim

Where is Donovan Weldon at? Why is he not being discussed in Pomona’s offense?

  • ?

    Donovan who?

Just kidding Donovan will be a very important part of the offense and the defense, trust me on that one.

All our talking will take place on the field.

I have been browsing on-line greater than 3 hours as of late, yet I never discovered any fascinating article like yours. It is pretty price sufficient for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made just right content as you did, the web will likely be a lot more useful than ever before.
