• AMAT 73

I have gone on record of the fact that the only rankings that matter are the CIF rankings at the conclusion of the season as my faith in all these rankings including yours are pretty much how you feel about the others. Having said that what makes you feel that in a head to head match CO would get the best of AMAT . Because in essence by you placing them at #1 you feel they would beat AMAT. It has been written many times our DB’s are a huge question mark and also the fact that CO’s DL is much the same question mark . Do you base it on CO’s passing attack would better our DB’s over the fact that our running attack would better CO’s DL . I know the DB’s at CO are top notch but them having to come up and run support would open up the secondary to some play action passes don’t you think. It would be a good match but I just want to know what led you to your conclusion other than a gut feeling ( no pun intended ).By the way one game will not make or break your theory.

  • AMAT 73,

Making Top 10s in high school football when you’re dealing with a Valley that has teams spread across several divisions in an inexact science. You can confuse yourself like Fred does by trying to do it strictly by asking “Would Amat beat Covina? CO? WestCo? Glendora?” or you can try to combine some head-to-head opinion with judging the teams by how they do in their own world. Amat’s world is different from CO’s, just like CO’s is different from Azusa. So for me, it’s not necessarily all about who would win if they played. I think CO will fair slightly better in its corner of the world than Amat will in its own. My real issue with Amat, and the reason I can’t make them No. 1 (for now), is because I have a lot of questions about this team. The QB situation. Both lines (size and experience). The back seven on defense. The receivers … Sanchez is very good, but he won’t strike fear into many PAC-5 secondaries. Wallace G. was a matchup problem for EVERY opponent he faced. He’s gone now. No more Gener on defense (and offense). There are HUGE question marks about this team. There’s also lots to like. I do think the secondary will be better. I think Jalen Moore is one of the best backs in SoCal. I think Rio is a fantastic QB. The coaching staff is top notch. I just have far fewer questions with CO.

Travis Santiago is outstanding at QB. Scoby is ready to go crazt this season. Gilchrist is a matchup nightmare if he comes to play every down. The secondary is lights out. Khari Garcia could be the top DB in the Trib area by season’s end. Yes, CO has guys to replace on both lines. And that’s a concern. I also think their LBs may be a step slow. But those super sophs I saw (14 sophs on varsity) are the real deal and should add some much-needed depth and size.

Believe me, CO and Amat for No. 1 is very, very close. And you’re right, one week won’t prove my theory. I think both teams roll tonight and then next week they’re both decided underdogs against Servite and Roosevelt, respectively.

  • Nowayaram

Judge them by how they do in there own world? That might be the stupidest thing I ever heard. So I guess division and strength of opponent means nothing to you. What ur basically saying is u think charter oak will have a better shot of finishing with a better record than amat … Way to go out on a limb considering a mats schedule …terrible terrible logic ..no wonder u had Azusa at no seven …their win loss will make u look real good once the montview starts ..meanwhile u will drop amat if they go two and two in the Serra …ur a pi eke of work aram

  • AMAT 73

I am not confused as much as not knowing your formula for choosing the rankings. I just figured number one should beat everyone below them but taking the corner of the world into account spins a different light on it .If you take that into account then in my book the number one should be West Covina .Their road to another championship is far easier than AMAT’s or CO’s, so it’s fair to say the chances of them fairing better in their COTW is a no brainer . Your answer makes sense to me in the factors you stated . The theory I mentioned was the something special about CO . As anything can happen on any Friday night and you should at least wait until after preseason to see if they really are a special team .

  • FredJ

I told Aram, using his logic Monrovia should be his number one on his all-encompassing poll since they have the best chance to go undefeated and dominate their division. If you judge teams by how they do in their own world, Monrovia’s No. 1 without a doubt. If this is the criteria he uses, who else could be No. 1?
When I start a season, I pick who I think is the best team, period. The best teams should have the benefit of the doubt until they lose. But Aram’s right, once the season starts it’s a crapshoot because we’re asked to compare things like how to rank a 10-0 Azusa against teams with 7-3 or 8-2 records in much tougher leagues and divisions.

  • Joe Amat

We’ll see if that theory holds up when the “All Encompassing” List comes out. If history has taught us anything, year in and year out Rio Hondo Prep has a better chance to succeed in “their world” than anybody else.

How Aram or Fred come up with their “list” is up to them, but a ranking RANKS teams/players against the other teams/players in that ranking group – not some other group. Imagine if Rivals ranked the Sierra Vista running back ahead of Soloman/Moore/Hart because he had more yards in the Montview League. Ridiculous – and they’d be out of business.

Even at that, the coaches of the Pac5 believe that Amat has a better chance of achieving in “their world”, as evidenced by their #3 ranking, compared to the Inland Coaches who feel that Charter Oak comes in at #10 in their lower division.

I wish the CIF office would follow their own lead and accept the Coaches Polls as a stronger indicator of the playoff weddings. if you watch in Girls and Boys basketball, the pairings match the final Top 16 poll the coaches put out, with a tweak a spot or two to avoid league match ups. They don’t do that quite as much in football (maybe it’s easier to do with 32 teams than 16?) because as 73 said…that’s the only ranking that REALLY matters (sort of – but that’s another post…or two)

So we can call this a list, but certainly not a “ranking”

  • ???

Maybe I missed something here but since when is the inland (D2) a lower DivisioMaybe I missed something here but since when is the inland (D2) a lower Division than the Pac5. (D1). I thought the two Dickinson were based on location.n than the Pac5. (D1). I thought the two Dickinson were based on location.

  • mapquest

How is the PAC 5 based on location? San Juan Capistrano to Long Beach to Mission Hills to La Puente? PAC 5 is the top division. Inland MIght be the 2nd and it goes WAY down from there

  • Just Saying

We need Mike the clone not some imposter mike the cousin.

  • CupCake2011

    Is the Bishop score correct?

    Bishop 14 – Garfield 0

For the talk from Amat73, Fred Robledo, and Joe
Amat, this sure was doesn’t convince that Bishop is the #1 school that can beat everyone else in the SGV!

In fact this should be very concerning for Bishop. Servite is the 1000 Gorilla on steroids coming down the hill and straight to La Puente.

    14 – 0? C’mon Bishop!

  • GarfieldBulldog’78

    Bishop Amat got lucky tonight

We beat you guys and you know it. The score doesn’t say but your boys said it on the field! You guys are not that good and your Offensive Line and
Defensive Line are going to be your down fall. I don’t see how you’re gonna survive Servite or any of the Serra League teams.

By the way, can you get a worse football field? I mean you guys are a private school right? That field is just terrible. It reminded me of the Lynwood or Bell Gardens fields.

    Garfield Bulldogs #1

Yeah Right Garfield PODDLE! Go to bed EAST LA BOY, or better yet stop eating those TACOS at King Taco, because they’re going to your head instead of your stomach!

  • Coach Slayer

Don’t understand the interest in rankings after 1 game. Just win the game in front of you and rankings will take care of themselves. It seems that neither CO or Amat looked very immpressive against mediocre competition. My 1,2,3 so far. El Monte, Los Altos, Bonita. How’s that?

  • Clueless

Slayer – don’t EVER put ” Coach” in front of your name because obviously you have NO clue!

  • Mike the Clone

    For the record…….

Mike the Cousin does a great job!!!!

    Mike the Clone

  • Jefe

That Servite-Amat game is gonna get ugly for the Lancers.

I don’t see how Amat scores a point on that defense.

  • Is that the comparison you want to make?

Oceanside couldn’t score either- so not sure that’s going out on a limb or really says anything other than Amat’s just as good as the San Diego champ and 2009 State Champ

  • Jefe

Except this isn’t the same 2009 team, genius.

  • obviously like your website however you have to take a look at the spelling on several of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very troublesome to tell the truth however I’ll surely come again again.
