IMPORTANT DATES: It’s going to be a busy offseason

Dec. 24: Christmas Eve … and the All-Area teams are tentatively scheduled to be on the back page of your local SGV(N) editions.

Early Jan.:
The second semester begins which means there COULD be quite a few check-ins and check-outs (transfers) to talk about.

Feb. 1: National Signing Day

Early March: Letter of intent days for private schools. I like what the Times’ Eric Sondheimer said about this … All those open houses and the shadowing of students will either pay off or leave some coaches in panic mode. So true.

March 9: CIF-SS announces revised playoff groupings

Aug. 17: Scrimmages begin.

Aug. 24: Week 0 games begin

Aug. 31: Week 1

Nov. 30: Southern Section division championships

Dec. 7: Regional playoffs

Dec. 14-15: State bowl games

Aram’s take:
Obviously, between March and August there will be a slew of other things like spring passing games, summer passing games/tournaments, the Hall of Fame All-Star Game. What strikes me and should strike you is how EARLY everything begins. Aug. 24 is Week 0 GAMES! I’m wondering if this means that tourneys like the Bonita Air Assault and SGV Shootout will be moved up. There are a lot of coaches resistant to starting anything earlier than they did it back in 1985, but times are changing and nobody will be able to avoid starting earlier than they did in the past. This also means that ALL YOU COACHES WHO KNOW YOU’RE GOING TO RESIGN need to do us all a favor and do it right when we come back from Christmas break. Yes, I said Christmas break.

  • Just Asking?

    Aram,
How do they select the players for the Hall of Fame All-Star Game?

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

    Just asking,

The game organizers send out nomination forms to all the coaches. They are hopefully filled out and returned in a timely manner and then the organizers and the coaches who are coaching the game make their roster selections from the nomination forms.

It rarely goes smoothly anymore. Some schools/coaches don’t even fill out the forms and do nominations … I hope to this year print who didn’t submit forms, because that’s inexcusable.

    Aram,

Do you think there will be any changes in the Southeast Division next year? Suggestions that I have would be to move the Pacific League to the Western Division and replace them with the SG VLY. league and anothe rwould be to move the Del Rio to the Mid Valley and replace them witht he Valle Vista League.

  • CoViNa

Aram, any idea why the State Championship games were not on Fox Sports this weekend?

  • money talks

Time Warner outbid Fox and the games were broadcast there. I think there was also the streaming option on their website

  • just askin’

loves hs football – who do you move OUT of the Western Division – and where do THEY go? once you start moving there is a hige domino effect that doesn’t make it as simple as it may seem

  • loves hs football

Just askin- I would move the Pacific League to the Wsetern Division and move the SG VALLEY League to the Southeast- geographically it makes sense since the SGV LG. is close to both the Suburban and Del Rio Leagues- but you could also move the Valle Vista to the Southeast since they are close to the Hacienda- and move the Del Rio to the Mid Valley- by the way West Covina will not be movingh up to a higher division cause that would mean the entire league wiould have to move up and the other schoolsd like Walnut and Diamond Bar could never compete in a higher division- WC may get moved to a new league when the next releaguing takes place.

  • here we go again!

john tuttle officially named head football coach at glendale high school!

  • What?

    @Loves high school football
What the hell are you talking about? Why would CIF move the Pacific up when they have struggled over the last few years to compete in the Southeast Division Playoffs? The Hacienda on the other hand has had 3 different teams play in the Championship game each of the last 3 years (4 teams if you want to count Westco twice) The best showing that the Pacific has had in recent memory was this year when a very “schizophrenic” Muir team got crushed by a very average La Serna team in the semi’s, the very same team that Los Altos had on the ropes the week prior. Rowland has struggled the last 2 years, but was a playoff team in 09, and a Semi Finalist in 08. Walnut is in the middle of a down cycle right now and had an under achieving group of kids the previous 2 years, but was still a playoff team last year. Diamond Bar has been down for the last 10 years (most of those years in a much higher division) but from what I’m hearing, has had a pretty good cycle of young kids over the last couple of years and should make some noise over the next 2 or 3 years.

CIF doesn’t take a 1 year snap shot look at a league and decide to move it up or down, they look at the body of work within the league over the previous 3 or 4 years to make those decisions. My guess is that the Hacienda gets moved to either the Central (d5) or the Southwest (d6)and the Mt. Baldy gets moved down to the Southeast to take the Hacienda’s place. The Pacific will remain where they are and the Del Rio will swap spots with the VVL.

Well before any midvalley teams get Moved, CIF’s first order of Business is to figure out what to do with Monrovia. They are going to win back to back to back. It really doesn’t make any sense to Move any teams nor leagues out of the Midvalley, except for Monrovia and San Dimas. Covina is on a down cycle, Monrovia and San Dimas should replace Walnut and Rowland in the hacienda. Then drop the Hacienda into the central. there will be some Weak Pac 5 teams, that will drop into the Southwest. Geographially that makes more sense. I think la Habra and tustin, may be put into a new oc league formed to compete in the Inland as they transition the BVIII into the Pac 5. Bishop Should be dropped into the Mission league with St Francis or get moved to the Baseline to compete in the Inland. I wounder what will happen to the Sierra? I say bring in Glendora, Let Chino Hills go to the Baseline. Then you can drop the Sierra into the Central. Move the Mt Baldy to the Southeast. Then You would have teams like West Covina, Charter Oak, South Hills,Bonita, San Dimas, Monrovia, Dranch, Bonita, playing each other yearly in league, playoffs, plus that brings diversity to the central. Teams would have to take further drives, and SGV teams would be able to compete against the IE on a competitive level. Right now, SGV football does not have any teams playing on a level higher than Div 4. Sad But true. I say we build back up in the Central and Western Div and/or maybe bishop in the Inland. Win there and make our way back up when the next Alignment Rolls around. It’s gonna be crazy and no one knows.

Listen people do you not understand this is not the year CIF re-leagues teams!!!!! All CIF does this year is re-allign leagues this year to a different division thats it!!!!!

  • Lancelot

Kablam, Dude, you are kidding right? You were kidding when you suggested that “Bishop” should be dropped to the Mission League? And just what do you base your “assessment” or more accurately your OPINION on? The fact that Amat made the playoff’s over the other 1-3 teams or maybe it was the way they lost to the eventual state champions after beig within 3pts with 10 minutes left in the FOURTH quarter? Maybe it was the way they made the playoff’s the year before or….What a joke! Yeah, and all the other teams in the Serra that didn’t even make the playoff’s or win the Serra League Championship should all be dropped to the Mission too right? DO YOUR HOMEWORK. There are more FACTS that I could drop to support my case and destroy your (especially if you bring up championships, etc…don’t want to go there though) BUT you’re in essence saying that all the teams in the Serra should be moved out of the PAC-5. Or maybe your grind is just with Bishop Amat??? Either way, you are “OFF BASE” and that kind of ridiculous remark is what makes others “Hate” on Lancer fans because you force Lancer fans to rise up and take you to task. Now I’m an arrogant Lancer fan for sticking up for my team. So be it…..
