Covina coach Darryl Thomas resigns after 15 years, Colts begin process to find replacement…

Coach DT: FIVE league titles, FIVE semifinals

Longtime Covina High School football coach Darryl Thomas has resigned after a successful 15-year run. The school has begun the process to find a replacement.

Thomas, who lives in Upland, cited the desire to spend more time with his family as the reason for his decision. Thomas has two sons and a daughter who are heavily involved in sports. One of Thomas’ sons played on the freshman team this past season at Upland High.

“It was a tough decision,” Thomas said. “The last two weeks, I’ve had a hard time sleeping. I absolutely still love coaching football and I love Covina High School.

“One of our mission statements was to have each kid reach their highest potential, but now it’s time for me to help my own kids reach their highest potential. My kids are all becoming high-school age and it’s time for me to be a dad.”

Thomas, a 1986 graduate of Wilson High School, had an extremely successful run at Covina after taking over in 1997. The Colts won five league titles and reached the semifinals of the playoffs five times under Thomas, who finished with a record of 103-70. Covina made the playoffs in 11 of Thomas’ 15 seasons.

Thomas will remain on as the school’s athletic director. He will be involved in the hiring process for his replacement. Thomas did not rule out a return to coaching at some point, saying that he may even coach at the freshman level in the future because the time requirements aren’t as heavy as the varsity level.

If he did coach again, Thomas said it would be at Covina.

Aram’s take: What can you say about Coach DT? Class act. One of the best coaches in the area. You have to wonder if Covina can stay at this level with Coach DT no longer at the helm. He knew how to handle the type of student/athlete Covina gets very well. We’re gonna miss him.

I love the passion that you have coach, not only for your players but, for your family also. what a great example for many of us men to learn from, a man who is willing to lay down his calling to see his kids fulfill theirs! God bless.

  • Go Colts

Who are the front runners? One has to assume that K.G. is one of them.

Love the caption under the photo ! Coach DT: FIVE league titles, FIVE semifinals. However, you forgot to ADD = NO FINALS, and most importantly…… NO CIF CHAMPIONSHIPS. Good Riddance.

  • Fatboy4

Who is this K.G.??? All I know is Joe Brown is going to get it.

  • JustSaying

What about Jude Oliva from San Gabriel? Young, energetic and very passionate coach. He also works with the same types of kids with less talent at San Gabriel. He always seems to over achieve with the talent or lack there of at San Gabriel and if he had kids like they do at Covina. I think he could be a good fit.

  • Colt fan says BYE!!

DT will go down as a guy that couldn’t win the big game!! Can’t blame a lack of talent for his shortcomings. A very mediocre coach to say the least. Nice guy, just not that great of a coach.

Aram, who in your opinion what be a good replacement?

  • Coach Thomas was a class act But….

Hey Cut Coach Thomas some slack! He did not have that much to work with at Covina. Last year he had Ainsworth and Mason and Maybe Vinny Venegas. That’s all. The other guys were small and slow, Including the line. He did the most of what could be done with the Talent Covina has. The only problem Coach Thomas had was that people kept telling him he had top notch talent, and he called games that way, instead of calling games like Jude Oliva at SG. He lost. I say Hire, the replacement, Drop the AD job and coach your son at Upland.

  • New York

also give Coach Thomas credit for leaving the program in good shape and with plenty of time to find a quality replacement. Covina’s season ended just one month ago. He did not drag this out into the spring.

It’s funny how people who obviously no nothing about football always trying to down a good coach and think the talent at the school is better than it actually is. Anyone who knows this city knows South Hills and Charter get the better kids. All Thomas did was give West Covina fits the last two years. They ran into a Monrovia team that was bigger and faster. Thomas did a good job with what he was working with.

  • Amazing

Amazing when you are talking about Covina players they are loaded with talent. When you are talking about the Coach staff they have no talent.

How did they get four players on the Tribune all area first team with no talent. I believe that is third behind West Covina and Charter Oak. Bishop Amat only got one player on this team.

According to Aram and Fred Covina had the third most talented team in the Valley ahead of Bishop Amat. So what does that say about Covina’s coaching?

  • kingofcali626

Amazing are you aware that Covina lost to a team that has been in the last three division finals. There is no shame in that. All tribune team is nice and all but the Monrovia team they lost to had 3 guys on the ESPN all so cal team including a rivals top 20 player in the country in Ellis McCarthy.

  • X’s and O’s

No one should bash a man who has been so selfless with his time and effort. Great job Coach Thomas and enjoy your time with your family!

  • Coach Thomas was a class act But….

Covina only had 3 players who can play on the next Level. Ainsworth, Mason, and Venegas. Everyone saw what Monrovia’s line did to Covina’s Line. I don’t think any of their Lineman were All Area Quality. Sorry Colt fans. I wonder why APU or Laverne or Cal Lutheran, has not made a offer to Venegas yet. Thats one player who Coach T should be trying to push. I hope he is.

Coach T made some bad calls at times. But all Coaches do. The bottom line is that “you can’t win the Kentucky Derby with a Mule”. Covina just did not have the horses under his watch. Honestly Coach T is a over achiever in my book. He won with Smoke and Mirrors. In retrospect, If Coach T played 5 tough preseason games, his teams moral would have been down come league and So on. Just give the guy his props, he took average talent and got them to playoffs every year. The loss to Monrovia, was the final nail in the coffin. That was as far as he could take Covina. Maybe the new coach will bring a fresh look to the colts. My guess is covina goes 6-4, at large playoff bid and 1st round exit in 2012. It’s going to be a hard task getting a big time coach in there. They just don’t have talent pool. You may see the wing t there soon, but then Coach Z will never lose the VVL if that happens. Well Good luck Colts. You are going to need it.

    Coach D.T.,

COVINA WILL MISS YOU!!!! I WISH YOU THE BEST!!!! YOU WERE REPRESENTED COVINA WELL!!!

  • @the haters

it doesnt matter what any of your guys say coach thomas was a great coach and put his entire life into the kids he coached sad to see him go!

  • coltfan97

As for the Coaching search for Covina,

Coach Brown has to be the front runner, but I hope Matt Kearns at least an interview!!!! He was an all CIF quarterback back when he played!!! He does teach at Covina, and I hope he is interested!!!!

  • Colt 76

Some of these harsh comments are coming from dudes that can’t spell or use good grammar. It’s all realative.

You should of seen Covina High in the 70s. A .500 record was a great year. We would of loved to have one league title back then!

  • look on the bright side

hey covina all of a sudden coach DT sucks Amazing you should be thankfull that your kid is not stuck in a crappy program like wilson where my son has had 4 coaches in 4 years good luck coach and i only wish that my son could have played for you
