WAY TOO EARLY All-Encompassing SGV(N) Top 25 … Follow me on Twitter @ChemicalAT

After watching a lot of film and consulting with coaches, this is the first All-Encompassing Top 25 ranking of the 2012 season. There will be another one right before spring practice, right after spring practice/start of passing circuit, post-passing circuit, and then the preseason. Mark your calendars.

1. Charter Oak — With so much coming back, the offseason task is easy: Groom a QB.
2. West Covina — Lose a lot and return a lot. And the Noodles Hull Era begins …
3. Monrovia — No more Big Ellis and RB is a concern. But ‘Cats loaded everywhere else.
4. Damien — With so many starters back, biggest task is to be a year better.
5. Bishop Amat — Defense looks great, but offense must replace top QB, RB and WR.
6. Chino Hills — Leading RB and WR are back, but Huskies have holes to fill.
7. St. Francis — QB Leibowitz is back, but most other key cogs on both sides are gone.
8. St. Paul — New coach Asante catches a break with veteran QB Telles to work with.
9. La Habra – Program can reload, but losing Porter and Bartolone stings.
10. La Mirada — Mats have every key skill player back. Should be a sight to see.
11. San Dimas – RBs look strong with Payton and Mitchell. Watch for WR Reep to blossom.
12. La Serna — QB Palmer back along with nice weapons in McCarty and Duarte.
13. Muir – Want to make sure Holmes Jr. sticks around before ranking ‘Stangs higher.
14. Maranatha — Program got humbled last year, now QB Elffers set for swan song.
15. Arcadia — Lagace and Carr gone, but McKinley/Medel backfield is scary.
16. Cantwell — QB Walsh is back after throwing for 2k yards. So is RB Gonzales.
17. Arroyo — No Rivera, but Knights were so young in so many spots. Watch out again.
18. Pasadena — Bulldogs could go a long ways with QB Cox, but that defense … meh.
19, Alhambra — QB Mendoza back along with several key weapons. Almont favorites?
20. Azusa — Here’s your early warning: Watch out for RB Cameron Blackburn. Wow.
21. Bonita — Gotta think Sunshine is back with a vengeance at QB. And Turner helps.
22. Diamond Ranch – Panthers lose some key guys and need to get way better at QB.
23. Claremont — QB has to be replaced again, but man, Flemming and Reeder are solid.
24. El Monte — B-Mart back at QB has Lions thinking league title may be forthcoming.
25. La Puente — QB Vasquez had 22-2 TD/INT ratio last year. RB/WR Centeno also back.

It will be interesting to say the least. I Like the CATS to win it all, even if they move to the Southeast in the playoffs. I would love to see MHS play WCHS

  • MonroVian

The RB position is never a concern at MTown! Someone will step up and run that Rock like always.. Come on if there is something Monrovia is known for is elusive runners. Let’s see who it will be?

  • Inconsistent -as always

Losing Chris Solomon, Justen Meaders, Dorrin Turner, Jimmy Frazier, Chris Cabellero, Lonzell Barnett, and more gets you #2 but #4 must replace “top QB, RB, and WR” and that’s a concern. Your getting as predictable as “NotSince”. And just as outrageous

  • Aaron

About Monrovia and the running back position, they seem to be like Bishop Amat in the fact that one always emerges. They have Heyworth…that kid is gonna give Elffers a run for his money.

    Not a bad list though.

  • Bulldogs have bite

    @Inconsistant,

Losing all those kids is a huge loss indeed. But West Covina has a JV squad that has not lost a game in 2 seasons and an 8-2 frosh squad to reload with. Our talent pool is deep. Enter Hornsby for Meaders, Josh Best for Solomon, not to mention Salgado returns. And we still have returning Ojala, Franklin, Henderson, Jones and Najera. Let’s not forget that Antonio “Noodles” Hull will be unleashed full blast next season.

I also hear around the rumor mill that WC is gaining quite a group of impact transfers. Add the transfers with the already solid home grown talent at West Covina and you have the makings of a very solid “reload” and not a “rebuild”.

Ask Maggiore, he says he is really excited about next years team. I am too, the program is catching fire and look forward to next season!

  • hs football fan

Dont forget that West Covina will be playing in a tougher division so that will be interesting- also I think you should have had Santa Fe somewhere in your top 25 as well as Calhi. The Del Rio should be a battle between LS,SF and CAL.

  • illogical too

Chompers – no one gets ranked on a good JV team and unconfirmed/unproven transfers. They get ranked on the bloggers latest mancrush, haterism, and trolling for page hits.
More hilarity – no Glendora or South Hills anywhere on the list. GHS played 1-3 tooth and nail and SH beat #3 and lost by 2 to #2 – but can’t beat anyone in top 25? Reason – no more Bogan/Quinsey to crush on

  • Bulldogs have bite

    Illogical/Inconsistent or whomever,

Of course nobody get’s ranked off a good jv team. But if it’s your assumption that West Covina is ranked 2nd based only because you think Aram favors the Bulldogs, now that’s “illogical” thinking.

WC has plenty of talent returning, the cupboard is far from bare. The coaching staff on all levels is about as good as it gets in a public school.

Right now everyone only has jv/frosh teams and unproven/uncomfirmed transfers to go on. Going on last seasons results of comparable scores is a useless argument. It’s a new season and the slate is wiped clean once again. Here are a couple examples: Charter Oak 2010 went 6-5, 2011 10-2. Bishop Amat in 2010 went 9-2, 2011 6-5. Bonita in 2010 went 12-2, 2011 6-5 etc. etc….

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

West Covina has way more production on offense coming back than Amat.

Aaron Salgado was a 1,000-yard rusher. Najera was once the starter at QB. Noodles is already making people look stupid.

Amat has some serious questions on offense. The defense should be very good, though.

If Amat sticks Dionza Blue back there at RB, I think they’ve got a strong chance at another excellent run game.

Koa Haynes got some experience last year and will have an entire offseason of prep time.

I just don’t know how you lose all that production from Jalen Moore and Rio Ruiz on top of it and not be concerned.

The run game should be OK, but QB and an outside threat is a concern for now. West Covina is further along in all areas.

  • AMAT 73

    Aram,
Got no argument with the top 3 just the order. WC finished #1 and I see no reason why they should not start #1 . I think CIF champs should be first but Damien ahead of AMAT you have got to be kidding. Do you say that because you know we will not face each other this coming season ??? If you ever had any credibility with me it just went out the window my friend. Seriously if you care to please elaborate how you came about that one. Also how are they above CH ??? By the way did you happen to see our freshman QB . I think he will defintely give Koa a run for his money with the same offseason prepping .

  • AMAT 73

On a side note , glad you shut down the comments on the young man from Arcadia. It was getting out of hand with some of those comments. Good choice.

  • Gerogie of LM

After looking at this list, La Mirada again has a very tough pre-season. With StPaul, La Habra, Bishop Amat and now St Francis on our pre-seasons schedule, we should start practicing now. LOL

  • http://jszp131@msn.com Little Birdie

Ainsworth checked out of Covina today. Where is he headed? Monrovia? West Covina? San Dimas? Aram find out what’s going on !

  • Dark horse

The top 10 teams are all the obvious teams. Teams 11-25 are all coin flip teams. The real question is, who will be the teams out of nowhere? Last year surprise of the year was Los Altos. Many bloggers had them going 0-10 for a second straight year only to finish at 8-4. So lets see who out there can pick the dark horse of this coming year.

Monrovia is going to have one of the biggest Line cores in the SGV next season. Ellis makes everyone look small, However the guys standing next to him were in the 6’1-6’3 250 – 275lbs range jr’s and sophomores(maxprep it). People were surprised in the Covina Game when the Cats line trotted out there, and man handled that line core. Those guys are going to grow and the smaller lineman are going to get stronger. This season will be the first year the football program will be in the new weight room facility/track full Circle. I expect the athletes to be bigger and stronger moving forward. You are going to start seeing the kind of physiques you see at upper division schools. Also with all of the coaching changes in the Midvalley and Southeast, it’s a big plus having a WildCats staff is Locked in and already working on next season. If you throw in the players Monrovia already has coming back, possible tranfers, and talent coming up from the lower levels Monrovia would win the Midvalley easily and could make a finals appearance in the Southeast if they competed in that Div. Of course the SE goes thru Wesco. Last season Monrovia was wrong about a state bowl appearance, but in 2012 all the cards are in place. 3 is a good spot for the cats! For Now.

  • New York

    Beef,
Monrovia won the MidValley playoffs pretty easily last two years. We can’t use that as a benchmark anymore. We need to raise the bar. I don’t know why we cant put West Covina on the schedule. Nothing would make the case for divisional reallignment more than playing and beating top teams from a prospective division.

  • Bulldog 4 Life

first of all you doosh get your facts straight.. the game against Claremont was away lol

    and second, whats your point???
answer me this, which team do you go for?????

  • PeacheyKeen

I’ve become a huge CO fan over the past ten years or so. I’m so pleased that Big Lou is remaining as head coach of CO. With so many head coaches in the SGV dropping like flies, it’s good to see the veteran sticking around. He’s done a fantastic job at the helm of the Chargers and has a super staff from top to bottom. If you’ve ever attended a game, you’d be shocked at the number of support staffers on the sidelines. Although I cannot speak from experience, I can only imagine what it takes to run a football program anywhere yet CO seems to have such a dedicated group of parents and coaches that keep the machine well oiled and maintained. Congrats to their program and can’t wait to see what’s up their sleeve for the 2012 campaign.

Good group of kids you have there but be honest with yourself. You play in a an extremely week division.

  • Not Worth #5

    Aram

You are again being too generous in your evaluation of the Bishop Amat Lancers football program. This program is without a doubt in much worse shape than it has been in the last 10 years. The cupboard is empty and the winter storms are here now!

You say their “defense looks great!” I strongly disagree with that assessment. In fact I challenge any of the Amat Blow Hards to come on here to name you half of the projected starters on defense for next year. They have no idea who’s playing next year. And that’s the truth!

The problem with Bishop Amat is that nobody of any real football talent wants to transfer to Amat anymore. Their home grown talent is talentless now. They have a small, slow, inexperienced, and weak front 7 AND the back 4 will be burned (AGAIN!) with speed. On offense? Well, they may be worse off on offense. No QB, No RBs or WRs. OK you established that. But the biggest problem is their front 5. Again, small, slow, weak, and inexperienced. Its not the boys’ fault. They “Try”. They just won’t have enough talent to compete against schools like CO, Chino Hills, or even the PAC 5. When is Hagerty going to develop his own talent? I think the well has run dry and 2012 will be Hagerty’s last year at Amat.

I predict the Bishop Amat 2012 record will be 4 – 6. Tell me where I’m wrong Amat Nation!

  • views

darick holmes jr will stick around especially after receiving a letter of interest from oregon and florida state (facebook) now will his dad stick around at muir??? thats a bigger question especially with the new coaching staff (head coach) hopefully he (darick jr) sticks around and becomes another all american like kevon and soon to be denzel talifero. especially this up coming year with a returning offensive line thats undersized but up to any challenge

  • Bulldog 4 Life

    @ Westco’s Cup Cake Schedule

you still didn’t answer my question…
which school do you go for????

  • SGV Athlete

Am I the only one that thinks Covina should be somewhere in this list?? And don’t give me “rebuilding”, They can still beat half the squads on here.

  • Dan

    Too “West Co’s cupcake schedule”,
Westco has between 2700 and 2900 students each year
not 4000. The South Hills and Glendora games were a couple of broken plays/turovers from being West Covina
blowouts. As for Loyola that was a bad loss but missing Solomon, Fraizer & Franklin may have had a negative effect on the game no???

  • Bulldogs have bite

    Dan,

No need to feed the troll. He has yet to claim his own allegiance and only wants to spew hate probably fueled by jealousy. So what if we won a game or two by narrow margins. And losing to Loyola is nothing to be ashamed of injured or not, them Cubs stand a good chance to beat anybody in the SGV.

  • Lancelot

The “no name” Donkey (JACK ASS) is at it again! HEE HAW! JACK ASS!

  • AMAT 73

    Lancelot,
Why even bother commenting on the idiot’s posts. You know AMAT is his life’s blood and if it wasn’t for AMAT he would have nothing in his worthless life. Just let him spew and pass it by .Unless he is using your name as a means to get that AMAT love and attention from us he craves so badly.

  • Lancelot

You’re absolutely right 73, consider my last post withdrawn! This would be a great topic of discussion for real football fans and even better for True Amat Fans. Next years team will definately look different than last years and I expect ALOT of positioning and re-positioning. The Football team is already in the weight room and prepping for next season. Isn’t Baseball season right around the corner??? Do you follow Amat’s other sports? How did wrestling team do yesterday?

  • AMAT 73

    Lancelot,
Yes I do follow the other sports and try to take in a couple games or meets if possible . Unfortunately haven’t had time and not sure the how the wrestling team did yesterday . I do know they lost to Crespi last week as a co worker is a Crespi man and couldn’t wait to let me know .I think many will be suprised by the football team next season due to some fine prospects on the JV team and some talented freshman and seasoned veterans returning so our premature demise is bit wishful by many . Baseball is right around the corner and can’t wait to see the 6’3″ kid on the mound . Maybe another hidden gem as in Zamora last season.

  • Lancelot

Tons of talent in the lower levels of the football program. Koa will have his hands full at QB and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the Frosh QB getting some looks on the defensive side of the ball. Frosh team and JV team had some promising good size linemen too. Don’t forget, Blue, Daniels and two JV kids battle at RB, Pontikes looks like a beast of a FB (if they run him there he is also a good candidate for LB) and Cook, Andrews, Frosh kid w/great hands maybe Blue out of the backfield ala Z. Shay and another year of weights for the young TE. You got Carillo at tackle/TE and I bet some Dline may be in his future next year too….Looks pretty good to me! Also, It’s good they are getting on it early because they will need time to mesh these guys together. It will be fun to say the least.
Baseball team has a BUUUUNCH of holes to fill. They lost 95% of the team from last year and the youngsters coming up will have to produce and produce QUICK! You know Amat’s preseason schedule, usually BRUTAL and chock’d full of ranked teams from all over the place. Being that it’s Amat, Coach has a speed loader and reloading usually isn’t a problem. I will reserve judgment and hope for the best, but we do have Z, Rio, Alcantara, Medina and Ball coming back. Any idea about local match ups this year?

  • AMAT 73

    Lancelot,
SSSHHHHH don’t give away to much info. But I feel we are going to be ok next season and a few to come.

  • Lancelot

Ha,Ha. Ok,but those who know, already know.

  • Dan

    73, Lancelot,
I’ve seen next years Amat seniors play as freshmen
and according to what I remember, if this was my list I would still have Amat at #1. Heck you guy’s still get 75 or 80 kids on your varsity roster. But I believe with this economy and other things, the gap between Amat and the rest of the upper tier of the SGV may be getting pretty close as more kids are staying home. In these past two years it looks like West Co and Monrovia have joined the upper tier along side teams such as CO, La Habra, Chino Hills, St. Francis. I still think teams such as St.Paul, South Hills, and Glendora will make an appearance in some years.

  • Non Enim MCMXCV

    DrunkaLot

Pull your mouth out of AMAT73 miniature manhood and tell me why you can’t list 5 projected defensive starters on 2012 Amat varsity football team.

Koa is 5′ 5″ and your back up is a freshman? Goodluck with that one! Frosh team and JV team are for filling the sidelines. Weren’t Blue and Daniels the ones getting smoked last year on the deep passes? Am I wrong?

So basically, your 2012 team has a BUUUUNCH of holes to fill and you play on filling them with the 2011 Freshman and JV teams? LMFAO…

Now go back to spooning with AMAT73…

  • concussion-symptoms

AMAT will have a lot of returning seniors in their defensive secondary which if i am not wrong, all have been playing/starting since their soph. year. so a bunch of experience which goes a long way. they do have a bit of a question mark at the QB position, but i am sure they will adjust to O to account for that. How does my boy Alcantara look at OLB this year?

  • AMAT 73

    concuss,
Haven’t seen him lately but with his work ethic and dedication to hitting the weights he should be a monster this coming year. I do look for him to move into the LB spot . With his speed and power he should be one of the tops in the Serra.
