Charter Oak WR Chris Gilchrist makes late-night decision to sign with Florida Atlantic

Gilchrist is headed to Boca Raton. Not bad.

Charter Oak wide receiver Chris Gilchrist decided late last night to sign with Florida Atlantic … even though he admittedly didn’t know much about the school.

Gilchrist made it official this morning by signing with the Owls. The 6-foot-5 Gilchrist had 849 yards receiving and nine touchdowns this past season.

He was deciding between Florida Atlantic, which made a late push, and Nevada and Sacramento State.

“He wasn’t sure, but I said ‘Chris, they’re gonna pay for your books and tuition, and you’re gonna be in Boca Raton, Florida,” Charter Oak coach Lou Farrar said.

Florida Atlantic reached bowl games in 2007 and 2008 under legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger, who was replaced by Carl Pelini (brother of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini) after going 1-11 this past season.

Aram’s take:
Awesome to see an SGV kid go to FAU! Poor guy, going from SoCal to Boca Raton. Congrats to Big Chris!

  • Great Advice

You would think there would have been more guidance and advice from the coach to make a decision like that other than “you’re gonna be in Boca Raton, Florida.”

  • concussion-symptoms

    Hey Jerk Off,

Read the quote! The coach gave him GREAT advice, “they’re gonna pay for your books and tuition…” It is called a FREE education!!!!!! Man, the uneducated people on this blog that just spew negative inaccuracies amazes me every day.

Congrats to this young man for earning himself a free education and the opportunity to play football at the next level.

  • What do you think FAU uses most to sell itself? I’m pretty sure it’s Boca Raton. You know, schools in great locales use those great locales to lure kids.

  • Why?

Why FAU over Nevada? Nevada is close to home and Nevada wins a lot of games.

  • concussion-symptoms

Nevada has a great football program right now, but it is COOOOOLLLLDDDDDDD up there in Reno. Where as Boca Raton is beautiful all year long… Possibly had something to do with it.

  • Leisure World

Aram – ever been to Boca Raton? Lou Farrar fits in better in Boca Raton that Gilchrest. 90% white and mostly retired (wit ha little Mafia influence to boot) I’m pretty sure recruiters DON’T use BR as much of a tool to recruit black kids from California – you can’t sell them on beautiful weather. From what I understand Nevada pulled the offer.

  • Good Luck!

He will get a free education. After watching him play, i was not impressed. he was tall but he was real soft and not very athletic. he will probably get better as he matures. I asked myself the same thing, between the 3 schools, that would be the last one to choose to continue your football career. Sounds like the other 2 schools were not offering a full ride. You can’t argue about a free education though.

  • New York

Why stay close to home? Leave the nest and spread your wings, unless you want to stay close to the jerk bloggers below.

Boca is very close to Miami. FA probably has a decent amount of international students to broaden the perspective on Campus. The biggest problem out there will be the distractions in Miami….

  • sgv fan

Soloman to play RB at Nevada wolpack

APU gets Victoria/Glendora and Charter Oak safety Thropay

  • Mapquest

New York, selling Boca Raton as being close to Miami would be like Cal State Bakersfield telling recruits they can always take a trip down to Hollywood. Just about the same. (you’re usually more on top of it than that)

  • Colt74

Being born and raised in Florida I know for a fact that Boca Raton is about a half hour away from Fort. Lauderdale (Party) and just a hair over an hour from Miami (Party). He’s gonna be one happy camper….once he gets used to the humidity and the B-29 sized mosquitos…

  • Priorities Gentlemen

Sorry Aram but a college education is more than bikini’s and boobs, but then again how would you know.

FUI is a great fit if Chris earns his degree and positions himself for a successful career after his playing days are over, that’s what collge is about.

So much emphasis is put on “earning” a free ride as if playing your way to “free” money only happens when a ball is involved. If you’re financially strapped there are tons of waivers to help you apply. If you need info about a school there’s plenty of stuff online, and every single collge is willing and able to “get in touch with you”.

It’s criminal, with so much information out there, that any student could be so absent of information to a school he’s chosen, whether that’s for athletics or academics. Wait, aren’t they one in the same?

Consider that FIU “found” Chris. What does that tell you? People !!!! Use your resources !!!! At the same time, is it fair to ask Aram, if he knows, what role did the SGV Guru play in all this? Seems odd that a SGV athlete would sign with oiut his imput?

I used to tell my kids, “Know what your value is. The schools will come.” And that’s the truth. Too many times information is nonexistent or incomplete when considering what may be one of teh most important decisions in a person’s life. As New York himself knows, this decision can change your life FOREVER !!!

Any one with limited knowledge of a university is better served to tell the prospective student/athlete, “Let’s look at the school together and see what they have to offer” rather than “hey it’s free and it’s near the water”…how incredibly criminal is that?

    For future reference:

Pick a school based on academics, major or program and then work your way onto the team, not the other way around. Contact the admissions office and ask about Financial Aid opportunities and Summer Programs prior to your senior season. Then when they come recruit you they already knwo what you’re about.

Wish Christ the best but it’s tough to pass up “private” school money over “state” school money that’s tied to public whims.

  • Colt74

    And….2 words about I-95….or 1A

  • New York

Lol. Hopefully some of those lesser known schools from far away start recruiting SGV more often.

  • FC, Damien Dad, Priorities Gentlemen,

Thanks for your lame schizo post, but before you lecture me try learning how to read first. FIU? What are you talking about? In your rush to try and cover up your man crush on all things Aram, you couldn’t even properly read what school it is you’re talking about.

    You are beyond soft.

Back to the drawing board … err pharmacy.

  • I Agree 100%

I completely agree with “Priorities.” He hit the nail on the head. I just wish Chris would have considered the fine academis institutions that are Eastern Washington and/or SMU…! The vacations destinations of Washington and Texas! LMFAO!

C’mon man! Lighten up! If the kid has any brains, he’ll do his job(s) at FAU and still be able to enjoy the bikinis and boobs bouncing around South Beach…! If he doesn’t then he’ll be back and regret the failed opportunity for the rest of his life!

Don’t Hate…! Respect the kid for what he’s earned!

  • Fam.

The relli chris bout to get it at FAU!reppin dena

  • Can Someone Please Translate ?????

“The relli chris bout to get it at FAU!reppin dena”

    WTF??? What language is this?

  • Stewardess, I speak jive. I’ll give it a whirl.

“The relli chris bout to get it at FAU!reppin dena”

The relli Chris = My relative Chris

bout to get it at FAU! = Is about to do well at FAU

    reppin dena = Representing Pasadena

So, in English it translates to: My relative Chris is about to do well at FAU, representing Pasadena.

  • AMAT 73

First things first, congatulations to Chris on gaining his scholarship and wish him nothing but success in the future.
Funny you mention the 2 schools chosen by AMAT graduates . I hope you are not insinuating or assuming that the priorities post came from an AMAT blogger or is it a coincidence you mentioned SMU and E.Washington in your post. Read Aram’s answer to priorities’ post at 7:34 on 02-01-12 and you will see where it originated. Can’t ever think of one time anyone from AMAT has put down a choice of schools by any of our SGV athletes. Not our style but might be from that other Catholic school in the area. By the way your post sort of smells like the same shiat your complaint is about.

  • Thanks for The Translation…..

Thanks for translating. I didn’t have my ebonics to english dictionary handy. I hope chris speaks/writes better than his relatives or his college career will be short lived.

  • I Hope Not

I certainly hope that Chris’ “relli” had NOTHING to do with his choice of schools or any other decisions that this young man has ever or will ever made/make. How embarrassing for yourself to actually think that looked okay to say out loud!

Good Luck Chris and good thing you are getting away from your “relli’s”

  • I guess it depends on your situation, but you need to be able to speak/understand both dialects if you’re going to be in the sportswriting biz.

I’m sure Chris’ “relli” could have said the same thing in English but he was probably trying to give a hint to Chris as to who he is. Or maybe the excitement just got to him.

  • Lancelot

Aram, That was CLASSIC! Absolutely hilarious. Way to break it down for our “Jive Challenged Bloggers” LOL!

  • D3na NaT!v3

stay reppin dena doe. dont be listen’n to all these white folks relli. stay up young fam

  • Wow…way to refute the stereotypes!

Let’s see how well “relli” “do” speakin’ and writin’ like that in college. WOW!. Guess they just can’t spell PASAdena.

  • Way To Go

Not “white”, just “educated”! Have a little self respect! And this has nothing to do with Chris, he will be fine as long as he gets away from you!

  • gasp????

What, Gasp- reppin ‘dena ! you mean he doesn’t live in Covina??? Gasp, another “out of district” player who mysteriously is on CO Roster – gasp

  • Can take the Thug out of the ghetto…….

…..but you can’t take the ghetto out of the thug.

I sure home Chris is much more educated than his “relli” If it quakes like a duck, walks like a duck and swims like a duck…’s a duck.

Yeah, what’s with “reppin dena” I thought he was @ Charter Oak. We all know that only Covina kids go to CO, right…

  • I’ve got a question for the “relli” …

I live in Pasadena and have been referring to it as “the Dena” when I talk to people. Should I drop the “the” and just call it ‘Dena? Or is “the ‘Dena” ok?

Full Disclosure: I’m white, but I like The Pharcyde.

  • This is Crazy

    @ Aram,

I believe that you would have to refer to it as “da Dena”. If you used the word “the”, someone might not understand what it is you are talking about.

  • Dan

Haa!, Aram that was funnier than heck! Way to break it
@ “Can take the thug out of the getto”,
Maybe use the spell check first the next time you critique someone’s education. LOL

  • I Agree 100%

On secong thougth, Eastern Washington is not so bad. It does have terrible weather, ugly women, mediocre academics, awful location in WA, but its better than Mt. Sac where many of Amat’s 2011 graduates went. I do see your “it’s better than nothing” point!

You can just call your home town “Fatdena!”

  • EthnicDena

What about ArmoDena? Since you “Brohs” have now taken over Glendale and DaDena! It’s straight right, don’t you think?

  • ArmoDena. I like that. But only part of Pasadena is Armenian.

    FatDena is the winner, IMHO.

  • Dan is illiterate

Before you call someone out…go back to English class dumbass.

Merriam-Webster ( they write a book with lots of words, ever heard of it?)

    1.ghetto – noun
    – a quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure

    Read ny spelling, then yours….jacka$$!

  • Ooops… bad…

I menant to type “Read MY spelling”……. I don’t want teacher Dan making fun of me ,,,,, :(….

  • Joe Amat

    You “menant” that? LOL!

    Proves the age-old blogger adage:

“he who insists on correcting others spelling or grammer, is doomed to make a spelling or grammer mistiake of her own”

(THAT *grammar* mistake was intentional 😉

  • Dan

    Too, “Dan is illiterate”,
Weren’t you the first to “call out” the education of Chris’s relatives?
    By the way I wasn’t referring to your spelling of the word Ghetto, I was referring to your spelling of the third word in your comment below;
“”I sure home Chris is much more educated than his “relli””.
Normally I wouldn’t critique a persons English or spelling on here but since you were so eager to put down someones education on here I couldn’t resist the meatball you threw on here. Then you did it again on your reply to me, So who is looking like a dumba$$.

  • Unbelievable a nicely authored report. My spouse enjoyed examining it quite a lot. There are various blogs on the internet this day and age, and simply such an abundance of guidance, you’ll find it hard to find out what is meant by true, coupled with what ladies basically make-up. A similar thing goes for meal plans or any type of style of fat loss. I have read a lot more n regards to the healthy paleo diets, plus am lost what things to understand due to all of it. It sounds as if paleo treatments are definitely the path to take, however they seem high dollar, and as well you need to have a healthcare professional. We are attempting to find about simple paleo drops, if in case they start to actually work. You might discover valid paleo drops, and even homeopathic paleo drops available for purchase all around. The customer may also secure painless paleo drops via Walmart at the moment. This diet which complements paleo, may sound like it’s a misery diet cause they say that you take in less than 600 calorie consumption on a daily basis. I’d believe that everyday people probably would burn excess fat on any strategy this way. In addition, they say that paleo makes it possible to have the capacity to stay with the diet program, as well will cause your entire body to be capable to eliminate a great deal more body fat.
