**CANCELED** First SGV passing tournament set for Mar. 17 at Duarte … and coaches, you and your teams are invited …

UPDATE: This event was canceled, not because it’s the first Saturday of the NCAA Tournament, but because Duarte’s team has signed to be in another tournament that day.

New Duarte football coach Jason Martin and former Duarte football coach Wardell Crutchfield Jr. are hosting the first passing tournament of the young offseason on Saturday, Mar. 17 at Duarte High.

Any interested coaches/teams from the SGV are encouraged to participate. Any interested players whose teams are not going to participate are encouraged to show up and they will be placed on a team made up of players without teams.

Recently, Martin and Crutchfield have been hosting free Saturday workouts for players from all over the area. They’ve been averaging between 50-60 players a week and the workouts focus on fundamentals before breaking off into 7-on-7 work.

The Mar. 17 tournament will start at 9 a.m. with a round robin action, then there will be a break for lunch and a knockout tournament will take place in the afternoon after lunch.

Aram’s take: **CANCELED** This is a great idea for those of us who are jonesing for some action. And given the new year-around policy with CIF teams don’t have to sweat any rules violations. From what I gather, this will be a very informal tournament, but will certainly benefit any teams/players trying to get some work in early.

Why would coaches from Duarte be working out and coaching up opposition players? Could it be they are hoping to poach players from weak programs or players that have no coach as of yet? Don’t they have enough to do coaching their own team.? Weird.

Coach Slayer, I believe you scored a touchdown on this one. Sure they are!! Many coaches are calling Mustang players to try to get them over, how do you think the linebacker and receivers from Muir were contacted.

  • football guro

Coach Slayer and woanelly you both his it on the nose. They are recruiting John mUir Mustang players to come to duarte. The linebacker already enrolled in duarte. Guess they think CIF is no longer in existence.

  • football guro #1

Coach slayer is absolutely right. The coaches att duarte are recruiting players from john muir high school. the linebacker has alreeady dis enrolled from muir and enrolled in duarte. Guess they think CIF is no longer in existence.

Call me crazy, but I think you guys are acting a bit paranoid if you’re worried about Duarte “poaching” players from other programs.

I would say that program still remains a hard sell for attracting kids away from other schools.

Muir players going to Duarte is a completely isolated incident. Coach Martin has Muir ties. He has Antyone Sims on his staff, a former Muir coach. And of course Muir’s athletics program is a hot mess right now with no football coach and now the hoops coach on leave.

  • football guro #1

Aram. Trust me when i say this. We know way more than you will ever know about this situation. Kids are being recruited and it’s not an isolated situation. Remember I told you so when CIF gets involved.

  • Coach Slayer

Now I’m really confused. Did coach sign up his team before or after public invitation to his all-inclusive tourney. And where is this other tourney? I would like to attend.

Aram, your crazy!! Trust “Football Guru” coaches are doing their best to act surprised when people suggest any impropriety. Muir has to find a way to survive, so the many variables that can destroy a program need to be handled right now and squashed. It is a wonder how with all the negativity, a school with about 900 kids and only about 150 of them play sports keeps on plugging. Keep trying Stangs it has got to change.

IF MUIR PLAYERS WANT TO LEAVE A HORRIBLE PROGRAM RIGHT NOW!!! WHY BE MAD? COACHES LEAVE BAD PROGRAMS TO FIND A BETTER ONE. SO WHATS REALLY THE ISSUE? I SMELL A LOT OF DRY SNITCHING! LET THE KIDS PLAY,WHERE THEY WANT ITS THERE CHOICE NOT OURS. ITS FUNNY HOW MUIR PEOPLE ARE HATING ON DUARTE WHEN THERE STEALING PLAYERS AS WELL,LOOKS LIKE THAT MUIR BASKETBALL THAT WAS INELGIBLE IS BACK AT FAIRFAX. LOL. BY THE WAY MUIR HAD ALOT OF PHS TRANSFERS ON THERE FOOTBALL TEAM THIS YEAR WAS CIF CALLED?

  • Sad days

Talk about a program killer. What good coach or Muir Alumni, would take that job after they crucified both their football coach, and now basketball coach! No one will take that job. Its a shame that school with so much history and tradition, is now the Farce of the SGV. With spring ball around the corner, and summer league Bball soon after that, they are in risk of having no coaches in place. This is sad, the admins acted with no wisdom and no loyalty to those who work so hard to keep Muir athletics respectable. Not only does that affect sports but it affects attendance. The incoming students which were excited about Muir’s Semifinal appearance in football, and Possible finals run in Bball are now going to have go elsewhere. Who would send their kid to a program where there are no varsity coaches in place which means that no programs are in place. This is just sad as it gets.

@ Stop hating, Its not the fact that Muir players are leaving it that coaches are in their ear. Do kids know how to say no to adults who promise them a highlight video or the promise of going D-1. Sure the kid is going to buy it, they’re 15-18 year olds, so where is the real concern (coaches victories). So If I am a coach then yes I do have a problem with kids leaving when they are being recruited. If you want to coach go out in your community and recruit. Muir better name a coach soon and I am not sure if they will ever recover, but hey it’s just high school sports

You sound so dumb maybe you should go do a run down on who is stealing who’s talent. Let me help you out Alemany All-Star “players” in the last 5-6 years was from Pasadena. one of CO’s main players “Dennis Rufus” on both of their back to back championship was from Pasadena oh and he was playing with Muir all Summer. Detrick Riley and Vernon Adams also was with Muir Mcculough, Marable, Hakeem, Cj Washingtn, Deron Smith, Rabanee, Mr. everything Steven Mitchell, Alif Graves up coming star, man the list goes on now Duarte because of coach Antjuan Sims oh yeah everyone knows his name he was just at Muir the year before last now all of a sudden Talifero leaves and goes to Duarte but who cares he’s from missouri anyway shows how much loyalty them folks have. Pasadena/Muir talent has been getting snatched away from them for years but for you to say Muir is stealing from Pasadena when Muir is located in Pasadena you sir sound VERY STUPID how can you steal players from your own back yard? Get real get a clue now imnot saying Muir didnt get a few players back in the days but Muir/Pasadena has been robbed the most.

  • Duarte???

Why would anyone go to Duarte? They play in the Midvalley, and well We all Know Monrovia owns that division. Maybe Duarte will play monrovia in the title game… Actually they should have just went to PHS instead…The Pacific league is up for grabs…Oh well…

  • midvalley

Why would anyone go to any of those schools? Oh I know, because they play in one of the weakest leagues and divisions in the southern section. Please send all of your boys who actually want to play and compete with the best to CO or AMAT. All of the rest of you are simply fighting to be the best of the worst.

  • Bishop lol Chater Oak…even Funnier!

If you send them to Amat and pay that tuition? They had two D1 Scholarship players(no major Conferences), just like Muir, Monrovia,Arcadia(all better schools), etc… Why go to CO they Had 1 D1 scholarship offer…hahah

  • Football Guy

To all the confused Muir players, cross the Arroyo and come to little La Canada. The bridges are up and working. Try it you’ll like it.

Its like you learn my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, such as you wrote the e-book in it or something. I believe that you could do with some p.c. to force the message home a bit, but other than that, that is fantastic blog. A great read. I will certainly be back.
